The Flight of Dragons is a 1982 animated movie produced by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr. and very loosely based on the speculative natural history book of the same name by Peter Dickinson and the novel The Dragon and the George by Gordon R. Dickson. Released direct to video in 1982, it was finally aired as an ABC 'Movie of the Week' in 1986.

Peter Dickinson (voiced by John Ritter) is a poor, dreaming scientist/inventor who is transported into the failing world of magic. He meets three wizards, two dragons, and the beautiful Princess Melisande (voiced by Alexandra Stoddart), who is a Wizard's foster-daughter.
Welcome!! --Gurubrahma 07:09, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
The green wizard Carolinus (voiced by Harry Morgan), his brothers Lo Tae Shao (voiced by Don Messick), and the blue wizard Solarius explain that the world of magic is dying. To save it, they must join together to create the 'Last Realm of Magic' -- a protected place where magic will live on after humans stop believing. The red wizard Ommadon (voiced by James Earl Jones) has refused to aid his brothers, and vows to dominate humanity by infesting humans with greed, in an attempt to stop magic's death by force. The only way to stop him is to take his Red Crown, the source of his dark magic. Twentieth Century Peter, being descended from an ancient hero, is asked to begin a quest.

But before the journey begins, a magical mishap leaves Peter in the body

of the house-dragon Gorbash (voiced by Cosie Costa when not voiced by Ritter-as-Peter). Knowing nothing about being a dragon or about magic, Peter travels with two other companions, a knight called Sir Orin Neville Smythe,
(voiced by Bob McFadden) and the dragon Smrgol (voiced by James Gregory). During the journey, it is Smrgol who teaches Peter the finer points of being a dragon.

At their campsite, Ommadon sends the Sand Merks to attack the party with their insanity-inducing cries. The blue wizard Solarius persuades the undead wolf, Arak (voiced by Victor Buono), to kill the Sand Merk queen in exchange for another chance at life. He agrees to join the quest. Princess Melisande is put into a deep sleep by the cries while using her magical abilities to see the party. The group presses on, and they are attacked by Giles of the Treetops and his elves because they are mistakenly suspicious of the dragons. The archer Danielle (voiced by Nellie Bellflower) saves the group because she recognizes Sir Orin. Learning the truth, Giles agrees join the quest along with Danielle.

They rest at an inn, and but in the night, an enormous ogre, much bigger than any dragon, attacks, destroying the inn, murdering the innkeeper, and kidnapping some of the party. Peter and Smrgol must rescue Sir Orin and Danielle from the ogre's castle. Peter takes some lessons in fighting as a dragon, but ultimately, Smrgol must defeat the ogre. Smrgol succeeds but unfortunately, his heart gives out.
I fixed the parents info. Check it out and fix as you see fit because I'm going to bed. Thanks for the discussion.

They move on to Ommadon's Red Realm and defeat the gigantic Worm of Sligoff. They use magic gifts, a shield and a flute, to defeat Ommadon's spell of despair and to put a flight of dragons to sleep (including Peter occupying the body of Gorbash). The magic flute does not defeat Ommadon's dragon Bryaugh (voiced by James Gregory, who also voiced Smrgol) who kills Danielle, Arak, and Giles. Sir Orin slays Bryaugh with his sword while being burned alive with his dragon fire. He dies. Ommadon magically appears claiming victory. Peter reappears when he realizes that two things cannot exist in the same place at the same time. He uses his scientific knowledge to deny all magic; in a dramatic conclusion, Peter alphabetically lists a many branches of science, and Ommadon, whose teachings and power is based on superstition and the ignorance of others, tries to match Peter's list with his own list of foul creatures (harpies, witches, demons, etc.) but cannot withstand Peter's onslaught of science.
R & I and Ashkenazi
The death of Ommadon allows the party to return to life. Carolinus arrives along with the remaining two magic brothers and succeeds in creating 'Last Realm of Magic' but sadly concludes that Peter is gone from the realm of magic. Princess Melisande awakens from her slumber and informs them Peter appeared, gave her a kiss, and woke her. Perhaps he is not completely lost to the world of magic, concludes Carolinus. She asks to join him in 20th century Boston, and Carolinus reluctantly agrees.

Peter, free of the debts he had incurred in his own time, mainly because he brings back the magical gold shield he, as Gorbash, used to defeat Ommadon, marries Melisande and goes to live in a house much like the one wherein Carolinus raised her.

Memorable quotes
Very nice job on the Show Boat revision.
*"Yes, Bryaugh, it's your turn now. You and your legions.... Attack, demolish, devour, burn, grind them to dust! Go forth, and death be thy destination! Doom.... Doom.... A flight of dragons! I command it! A flight of dragons! Doom.... Doom...." --Ommadon to Bryaugh.
*"Man hears of the dragons invulnerable skin and, lo, he makes armour, battleships, tanks! A fairy flies and, furiously jealous, man himself defies gravity with machines he will call aeroplanes. A magician looks into his crystal ball and sees and hears halfway across the world. "Ah," says man, "if only it could be so." And centuries from now he conjures up miracles, but calls them radio and television. If man is to surmount the insurmountable, there must always be magic to inspire him. The world needs magic! Magic cannot die...." --Carolinus to his brothers.
musickna]
* "I'll teach man to use his machines! I'll show him what distorted science can give birth to. I'll teach him to "fly like a fairy." And I'll give the ultimate answer to all his science can ask.... And the world will be free for my magic again!" --Ommadon accompanied by visions of bulldozers destroying forests and the atomic bomb.
* "Man will never inherit my ___domain, because I'm making man mine." --Ommadon to the other Magic Brothers.
* "Is the dragon not a wonderful creature?" --Smrgol, said when Peter/Gorbash starts to recover after Carolinus has merged the two.
* "Blade with whom I have lived, blade with whom I now die, serve right and justice one last time. Seek one last heart of evil. Still one last life of pain. Cut well old friend, and then farewell." --Sir Orin's prayer as he faces Bryaugh.
* "The irony of all existence is that good would be completely impotent without the contrast of evil." -- Carolinus to Melisande.
* "(devilish laugter) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!. I have gathered the sum total of the world's evil in one place ... and that place is me! I am invincible! No magic STRONGER! I ... am the world. And the world ... is Ommadon." --Ommadon to Peter when transforming.
* "By the beards of Antiquity!" - Carolinus in shock when he discovers he has merged Peter and Gorbash

Demeaning? Notes
*The four wizard brothers clearly represent the four classical elements. Carolinus ("The Green Wizard") is Earth, Solarius ("The Blue Wizard") is Water, Lo Tae Shao ("The Golden Wizard") is Air and Ommadon ("The Red Wizard") is Fire.
*The twentieth-century scenes in Boston do not seem to take place in the present day. Antiquity says it is the "closing decade" of the century, indicating the Boston scenes take place in the 1990s, which were still in the future at the time the film was made. However, the characters' style of clothing in the twentieth century seem to set the scenes in the late 1940s or early 1950s, which would be somewhat consistent with the age of the real-life Peter Dickinson. However, the real Dickinson was English while the fictionalized Dickinson of the film speaks with a distinctly American accent.
*The voice actors for Solarius and Antiquity were not credited. Antiquity was voiced by Paul Frees, but it is not known who supplied Solarius' voice.
*The original score was composed by Maury Laws. He also composed television music for (among many other works) "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" starring Burl Ives in 1964, 1969's "Frosty the Snowman," 1970's "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town," 1974's "The Year Without Christmas," the animated "The Hobbit" from 1977, 1979's "Jack Frost," and the animated "The Wind in the Willows" from 1985. A notable film credit includes his 1981 score to "The Bushido Blade."

Hi Yid.
I haven't had the opportunity to edit many pages on contemporary persons, so may not be up to speed on what counts as best practice. Still, I find non-contextual racial/heritage information to be essentially demeaning, in that it allows the reader to use cliche thinking to categorize the individual and his/her heritage.

Various VHS editions of the film have been released since its debut in 1982. To date, the film has not been released to DVD. Some online auction sites claim to have DVD copies available; these are likely illegal copies of the VHS edition.
Example: Joe Blow, an Irish American, invented the kazoo.
vs
Joe Blow invented the kazoo.

There was also a LaserDisc release from which some VHS copies were produced. The LaserDisc release was made by PolyGram Video.
OR

Joe Blow was an Irish American serial killer.

vs
Joe Blow was a serial killer.

Differences from the original source
I have no problem with

Though generally popular with fans of the book, the films portrayal of dragons, though well reconstructed from the illustrations of Wayne Anderson, bear little similarities to how Peter Dickinson envisioned them.
Joe Blow was an Irish American humorist who specialized in retelling Irish folktales.
OR
Joe Blow was an Irish American chef who won the Irish Culinary Institute Gold Award for best boxty.

*In the film, dragons are shown to have nigh invulnerable hides, whereas in the book, it states that dragons couldn't afford to evolve natural armor for fear of reducing their flight capacity.
as this provides a context for the person's field of activity.
*The film shows dragons to be born fully developed. In the book, dragons begin life as gigantic tadpoles living in calcium rich lakes.
*Peter Dickinson explicitly wrote that the dragons fire igniting abilities were purely chemical in nature and had nothing to do with electricity, as shown in the film.
*The book mentions that female dragons were not airborne, nor could they breathe fire. Lunarian, the only female dragon shown in the film has wings and therefore presumably breathed fire.
*The film shows dragons with the ability to speak, whereas Peter Dickinson mentions that dragons were intellectually no different to average reptiles.

I call irrelevant heritage information essentially demeaning because such adjectives suggest that there are, for example, "ALL" inventors and some sort of subclass of "Irish-American" inventors. Demeaning because the adjective suggests that Joe Blow shouldn't be considered as part of "ALL" inventors or compared with "Non-Irish-American" inventors.

Further demeaning because it suggests that one's heritage is essentially defining, and to be associated with one in perpetuity. How is Joe ever to be free of that Irish-American label, once it is applied? Whether he wants to be part of that group or not, OTHERS have defined him so, and it not for any act on his part.

I assume from your username that you are a Proud Jew, and I would certainly understand that you wish to extend your pride to Mr Burrows by noting his participation in that heritage of which you are (justly) proud (or so it would seem from your username).

I'm an old coot, not a youngster like most of the wiki editors, and grew up through times when becoming aware of the subtlety and pervasiveness of racist thinking was a hard-fought personal battle. Before the PC police existed, individuals had to face the nature of racist language and thinking as individuals, and come to their own conclusions. I came to these conclusions independently, and have tried to live by my conclusions as best I can.

I don't mean for us to argue, but since you asked for my thoughts... Thanks very much for asking. --Nemonoman 01:18, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

PS I'm not going to get into a revert war if you want to put the adjective back.
PPS. Just checked out your userpage. We share similar political philosphy (dem/lib/Israel). Also pleased to see that you are feeling your way through the racist language questions. Hope my thoughts provide a helpful addtional datapoint in your evolution.

Response to your notes
Thanks for your answer. Good to find careful thinking by well-intentioned and thoughtful editors.

I think Jewish American is ENTIRELY appropriate re: Sholom Aleichem for example. Wish that excellent example had occurred to me.

Also I think you raise a good point that some information, e.g, Jewish-American, might seem more appropriate in later paragraphs than as in the opening sentence. I think I might have a peek at the George Washington Carver article, for example. He was notable not because he was Afro-american, but because he was a first-class scientist at a time when few Afro-americans were educated, let alone scientists, and his achievements served to change attitudes toward Afro-americans. I DON'T think that he should be called an "Afro-american" in the first sentence.

I work on a number of articles about India, and I'm really troubled by Hindu/Muslim revert wars. See Aurangzeb history for some intense activity. Also that Hindu is being used as a replacement for Indian or Indio-. For example a lot of discussion about changing the name of article Arabic numerals to Hindu-Arabic numerals. Like they were made by persons of a religion, not of a geographic area.

BTW, I was frankly surprised that Abe was Jewish! It never occurred to me wonder! Thanks for that info!--Nemonoman 02:12, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Compromise on DCV and an apology
In recent days I have grown disgusted with Deeceevoice's comments and actions. As a result, I am withdrawing my support of her. That said, Justforasecond has behaved very poorly throughout this entire affair but more so in recent days, placing comments on DCV's talk page merely to stir up trouble. As such, I am proposing that both DCV and JFAS be placed on personal attack parole for a year at Perhaps this is a compromise that a majority of the parties involved could agree to. hey yid613,

i put the comment about deeceevoice's experience because the arbitrators are hinting that her behavior might be due to her poor understanding of policy (on the /Proposed Decision subpage). 10,000 edits is enough for someone to be an experience user...and anyway, many people have told her about the policies.

Why do so many people fail to realize such truthful and powerful logic?
Matthew, I want you to read this carefully:

An Atheist Professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the
problem science has with God, The Almighty.

He asks one of his new students to stand and.....

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student: Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to
heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill.
But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?

(Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is
God good?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?

Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student: From...God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything.
Correct?

Student: Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?

(Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these
terrible things exist in the world, don't they?

Student: Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?

(Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and
observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen
God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, or smelled your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student: Yes.

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol,
cience says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.

Student: And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.

Student: No sir. There isn't.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of
something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light,
flashing light.... But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't.
If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't
you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but man has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, then yes, of course I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize
where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your own opinion, sir? Are you not a preacher rather than a scientist?

(The class is in uproar)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelled it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face
unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it, sir.... The link between man & God is FAITH.
That is all that keeps things moving & alive.

Now guess who the student is........

Category:Jewish States
Hi Yid613: Perhaps you are not aware that one should not empty a category that has been voted for deletion because that is the job of the closing admin who tallies the vote and certifies the vote as "Delete". If you read the wording on the delete template it states "Please do not empty the category or remove this notice while the discussion is in progress" which applies until the last admin does his job by deleting the category which will then be automatically deleted from all pages that it was linked to. It is best to follow this protocol, even if it takes a little more time, so that no technicalities can be dredged up to oppose the deletion. The correct procedure is to contact the admin who closed the debate and "certified" the vote to delete, or even another admin who was not involved with the vote, to complete the process by finally deleting it. Thank you for noting this in the future. Best wishes. IZAK 03:43, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Category:Conductors
Hi. I see you have added the category conductors to the Opera Project page. Perhaps I should explain that all the categories listed here are opera categories in the sense that they are subcategories of opera. There are lots of relevant music categories, however we are not listing them on the Opera Project. If you wanted to start an opera conductors category it would be part of the opera tree, although having a single conductors category under music seems perfectly OK to me.

Would you mind if we removed the conductors category from the Opera Project page?

Yiddish Operettas
Hello. Glad to see that you're taking an active interest in the Opera Project.

One of the things I did while contributing to the Opera Corpus was to combine the List of operettas with the works in :Category:Operettas in order to try to produce a comprehensive list of what had already been done in this area. (Since then, a whole lot of operettas have been added to the List, sigh!, but that's by the way.)

Anyway, as well as deciding that The Swing Mikado didn't really fit, I omitted the three operettas of Abraham Goldfaden that were listed (Schmendrik, Breindele Cossack and The Witch of Botosani), because, reading about them and about Goldfaden, and looking at the Yiddish theatre article, they (and he) seemed rather too off-centre and specialised for the Corpus - plus Schmendrik and Breindele Cossack are apparently lost, and it looks as if that may also apply to The Witch of Botosani.

Do you know anything about this neck of the woods? Any idea of the extent to which Yiddish operettas resemble(d) Viennese/French/wherever operettas? Are they always performed - if they still are performed - in Yiddish to Yiddish-speaking audiences or are they ever translated? Should any be included in the Corpus?

Partly I'm just curious, but partly I feel slightly guilty about my unilateral decision. Chinese opera has also been omitted, but I think that's a rather different case. Any help gratefully received!

While you're there, I notice that you also signed up for the Classical Music Project. Looking at the Project page and its rather elderly Talk page, I'm rather inclined to delete all reference to opera there and to put in a link to the Opera Project instead - there's one from Opera to CM but not vice-versa - as Viajero suggested at the top of the Talk (but no-one addressed his/her question). Any thoughts on this? I'm rather inclined to just do it rather than broach it on the Talk page again. --GuillaumeTell 22:51, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

stoning
Hi Yid613,

I am sorry if my summary was offensive. I am aware of some of the arguments that Jews make showing that Jesus is a false Messiah. I may have my personal opinion but I think you should agree that Jesus was accused for blasphamy and was killed. Why does it surprise you? Regards --Aminz 23:32, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

: Yid613, Thanks for your reply. It seems that I need to do more research. Take care. --Aminz 23:54, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Nashooz
Yid613, I think Nashooz is not mere disobedience. The act should be at least unrighteous. If not, no need to discuss it. Please change the article directly and I'll look it up later --Aminz 07:09, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

:I don't think I articulated the point clearly enough on the talk page. I have no idea whether nashooz refers to wife disobedience or not. My bringing it up on the talk page was not meant assert that it does refer to disobedience. It was meant to imply that since there are both Muslims who believe that it does refer to disobedience (as I proved with the link to the website) and others (like you) who believe it doesn't (or has you have clarified above, that it doens't necessarily). Therefore, if edited the article to state that these two interpretations exist within the Muslim community, changing the current version, which says definitively (and rather POV) that it doesn't necessarily refer to disobedience, would you be ok with that? Personally I can't think of any reason why one would object. Since I have proved with the link and your comments that both views exist, I think the article should make it clear that both views exist. That's all. Thanks. Yid613 07:43, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
