A prank call, also known as a crank call, hoax call, phony call, or phony phone call is a form of practical joke committed over the telephone. As with all practical jokes, prank calls are generally done for humorous effect, though there is a thin line between humor and harassment, and the person receiving the call may not find it funny. Prank phone calls began to gain a nationwide following over a period of many years, as they gradually became a staple of the obscure and amusing cassette tapes traded amongst musicians, sound engineers, and media traders beginning in the late 1970s. Among the most famous and earliest recorded prank calls are the Tube Bar tapes which centered around Louis "Red" Deutsch, and the Lucius Tate phone calls. Comedian Jerry Lewis was an incorrigible phone prankster, and recordings of his hijinks, dating from the 1960s and possibly earlier, still circulate throughout the country to this day.

Even very prominent people have fallen victim to prank callers, as for example Queen Elizabeth II, who was fooled by Canadian DJ Pierre Brassard posing as Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, asking her to record a speech in support of Canadian unity ahead of the 1995 Quebec referendum. Two other particularly famous examples of prank calls were made by the Miami-based radio station Radio El Zol. In one, they telephoned Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and spoke to him, pretending to be Cuban president Fidel Castro. They later repeated the prank, except that they called Castro and pretended to be Chávez. El Zol was also fined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Prank calls in popular culture
Burma
Prank calls are generally done for the amusement of the pranksters themselves. Many pranksters record the calls to share the joke with an audience. Some performers such as the The Jerky Boys have made a name for themselves producing albums of their recorded prank calls. Other prank call performers, such as Bob Pranky - Prank Calls Unlimited, Touch-Tone Terrorists, Brother Russell, The Happy Telephone and
LEE ROY MERCER have garnered a following as well. The television show Crank Yankers is a series of real-life prank calls made by celebrities and re-enacted on-screen by puppets for a humorous effect. As with the Bob Pranky calls, the Crank Yankers sometimes borrow ideas, or entire routines, from obscure releases by relatively unknown pranksters such as The Ballbusters, who are neither credited nor remunerated for their original fun.

Prank calling and the Internet
The archives were not there when i changed it.Also my points were valid.I think we should re-open this discussion in the Myanmar talk page. Dermo69
Michael Biggins, an actor whose real name is Michael Bigansky and goes by the performance name of Blackout was (as far as can be researched) the very first person to put original prank calls on the internet in a digital streaming (instantly playable) format. There may have been downloadable calls before this time, but not streaming. He was also the first person to host an internet talk radio show based primarily on prank calls on the now defunct Lycos Talk Radio network Which was an internet based talk radio site using Wonderhorse internet broadcasting and teleconference software. Blackout started his site Blackout's Box in 1995 (cite: verifiable by a whois check on ___domain name blackout.com and also verifiable with web archives such as wayback machine and in newsgroups archive postings and several major print sources - see references section) and put his first pranks online using the test version of RealAudio Beta software (which has over time evolved into RealPlayer) on a 14,400 U.S. Robotics modem. This was long before mp3 or SHOUTcast streaming or internet radio stations existed. Before this time, the only way for both prank callers and prank call fans to hear pranks was by exchanging underground tapes, or maybe hearing them on the radio, but many radio prank calls were fake or 'set up' because of the steep FCC fines that could be imposed on the station if caught. Blackout used reel to reel recorders in his high school radio station WKPX in Florida to record his first pranks, and then transferred them to (voice mail boxes) - hence where he got the name 'Blackout's Box'. People would spread his voice mail box number around on BBSs (bulletin board systems) and other VMBs so that calls into Blackout's voice mail box to listen to his pranks would grow virally (before internet multimedia type viral spreading existed), and he would get requests from all over the U.S. for him to prank people. Blackout was finally able to preserve his pranks in a digital format when digital audio tape recorders became available. This allowed him to port them to computer hard drive without losing quality. They were then converted to the RealAudio format and uploaded via FTP to his site the first day RealAudio beta became available in 1995. It was quite a pain and time consuming process to do at the time, but the ability of having anyone in the world who had a modem and the RealAudio plugin be able to hear one a prank instantly and in real time with no downloading was a big step forward. The very first call he put on the internet was called The Rrrrrrrooksnitchzien Society in which he kept 411 telephone operators going mad for a good half an hour. Blackout's pranks were known to be longer and more complex than your average quick prank and he gained quite a following and much international press because of this. Hardware, software, technology and bandwidth have grown exponentially since Blackout put that first call up on the internet and so has the flood of sites, shoutcast, icecast, and podcast stations devoted to prank calls. Blackout, while moving more into the acting and independent film scene, still hosts an interactive TV/RADIO show on Thursday nights and occasionally still does prank calls.

The Woodcreek Faction (http://www.youtube.com/thewoodcreekfaction) broke new ground by becoming pioneers of filming prank phone calls & posting them on the web. The films allow the prank caller to portray a character who is seen by the audience instead of heard. This format has inspired many other comedy teams. The Woodcreek Faction pranks, in particular, are very successful on YouTube as well as many similar sites.
Trentino-Alto Adige/Sudtirol
A classic example of their work "Kung Fu Pizza Prank":
Hello Asterion, I would appreciate advice with what has been done on WP with regard to this region. I believe Gryffindor has an agenda where he has systematically gone through and pushed a highly-Austrian POV. He changed the Trentino-Alto Adige page first to Trentino-South Tyrol in Oct. of 2005. Now we have the Province of Bolzano-Bozen called South Tyrol. The city of Bolzano-Bozen switched to Bozen-Bolzano. The town of Brennero-Brenner, simply as Brenner. I'm from this region, and I can say this is getting to the point of ridiculous... I don't know if to cry or laugh. I mean, because a user is very determined, he can just do this? :Taalo, I am not prepared to assume bad faith towards anyone. As far as I see it, we had a long period of discussion with several options proposed and surveyed. As a sideline, I have spent most of my adult life in England and I can vouch for South Tyrol being the standard English denomination. Regards, <font color="Blue">Asterion</font><small><font color="Green">talk</font></small> 20:04, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
::I have lived all my life in the US, and I never heard anyone say South Tyrol before. I have no problem whatsoever with the words South Tyrol. It is indeed a valid translation of the German Sudtirol. BUT, I do have a problem with the Province of Bolzano/Bozen being named as South Tyrol. I do have a problem with users of Austrian/German background going and renaming Bolzano-Bozen to Bozen-Bolzano, etc., etc. Also, Trentino-Alto Adige being changed to Trentino-South Tyrol is another big one, and was the start of all of this. Gryffindor made the change on his own, and THEN expected a discussion to be held. The whole time he plays innocent, as if he just wants to "use English in the English wikipedia". He definitely has a strong opinion to using this as the new name.. and he will enforce it even using admin privelidges. Sorry, I simply do not buying that he is doing what is in the best interest of WP. Taalo 00:23, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

<!-- ============================================================================= -->
Ever since the opportunity has been available, there has been internet radio stations dedicated to prank calls. Most of them feature a so-called "rotation" of prank calls which is a constant broadcast of various prank calls submitted by the community, usually streamed from a SHOUTcast server host.

A lot of prank-call stations also feature live shows dedicated to prank calling - many of the infamous radio personalities from these communities like to spam their names on common sites like Wikipedia as an attempt to gain more listeners (see page history).
I would never imagine hearing myself say this - but it appears that this has exceeded all limits, all boundries of sanity. I would rather discuss with Willy on Weels than Hipi. Uhh, it is with sad questioning that I ask you... that we start a process to give a long-term ban to Hipi (a year - half a year?) --PaxEquilibrium 19:55, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Although prank call communities are still relatively small-scale compared to FM stations that feature live pranks, it is a growing community on the internet today and many new communities are developing.
Moving - My apologies
Asterion, I sincerely agree with you. Hopefully the debate or controversy is over. The official name of the region is "Trentino-Alto Adige" as per the Italian government and many creditable sources listed on talk pages. The alternate (german) name is "Sudtirol" (accent missing) - and is reflected in the listings correct as per wiki rules. Same with the province name - correct name is "Bolzano" with the alternate name of "Bozen" (german) listed correctly to reflect wiki rules. We need help enforcing this, really. The only issue now is with the city naming convention for that region and province. By the Italian government ruling, they use a dual-naming convention with the Italian name and then German name (i.e. Bolzano-Bozen). Sorry for all of this, I have learned and will do better in the future! Rarelibra 20:39, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Examples
Asterion, please lets not have this go back to the German POV version. For the past year Gryffindor has been pushing his agenda incrimentally. Now we even have the Province of Bolzano listed as "South Tyrol". I saw that you mentioned to Ryulong that this discussion has been ongoing. But how can we let people who are trying to push a German POV just do this? Bolzano-Bozen was switched to Bozen-Bolzano. I mean, you just have to look some at what they have been doing to see their motives. Gryffindor originally moved the page Trentino-Alto Adige himself on 25 Oct 2005 to Trentino-South Tyrol. This should raise a flag right away that he is not partial in this. You mention an agreement was reached before, but it was one that was reached by a majority of German/Austrian users. That, and... do we name Provinces now by consensus? I'm sorry, but I can not assume good intentions from the user Gryffindor. I feel he abuses the Wikipedia system, and actually goes about it as a snake. And sure, I'm going to get scolded for that last message, but, for goodness sake, aren't we required to stand up to this sort of stuff?? take care. Taalo 23:56, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Asterion! Thank you very much for your message! It's great that you have such a wonderful reason to go back home - best wishes to you brother and the lucky lady and have great fun at the wedding! Just don't worry about the images or anything (though if you could get anything it would be great), I believe WP is lucky to have you on contributing in all the capacity you have!
:Receiver: No.

:Caller: Is Mr. Wall there?
As concerns the articles, I guess Barreiros can wait for some time, I did as much as I could to it not speaking Spanish or knowing much about the company anyway. I believe, however, that our dear Chrysler 180 is starting to appear in a quite nice shape, at least content-wise - I need to sort out the Centura section yet, with references et al, but I think I would need your help with the Barreiros section and making sure all info is in the article. More importantly, you could perhaps get some photos from Spanish Chrysler enthusiasts/owners far easier than I ever could, so if you had any free time in the coming weeks, it would be great if you could think about that.
:Receiver: No.

:Caller: Are there any Walls there?
Again, have a great time in Spain and wish the young couple (or how do you call them in Spanish or English) all the best from a fellow WP user :D
:Receiver: No.

:Caller: Then how does your roof stay up?

Hi Asterion,
I am glad you asked me this because I had the suspicion all along, but considering the barrage of personal attacks I have been under I wasn't going to say it out loud otherwise more abuse would have probably come. I have a number of suspects that I was going to give in for inspection, wasn't there some programme by some user who can check up on these things, including I.P. addresses? thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. <font color="red">Gryffindor</font> 21:19, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

::HAH, I think this is the first time I have agreed with you ever Gryffindor. There is hope! I did also have suspicion that at least one user is a sockpuppet. I noticed one user just registered and cast a vote supporting. I sincerely hope that it is not a misguided attempt to influence the discussion, because for once we need to be honest about this and discuss it professionally -- and not taint things like this. Oh, did you read that last sentence of mine their buddy? ^_- I have been attacking what you have done Gryffindor, not you personally. I'm sorry, but the purpose also of being firm is to confront people when they do things which appear to be dubious. Thanks a lot Gryffi for creating this farce with regard to the region I call home. Really appreciate it there buddy. Ooops I'm gonna get scolded again because ultra sensitives will say this is a personal attack. *roll eyes* ciao ciao. Taalo 00:16, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
:::Sorry about that last post Gryf. While I do not appreciate what you have done, I don't want to be this angry. take care. Taalo 04:26, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
::::Actually, given I assume this may be (hopefully not, but yeah, it is too suspicious) some misguided attempt to boost the voting, I'll try to see who it is and ask them to just come clean, and ditch the b.s. I for one must say I don't even believe in this yes/no voting. Not only does it open things up to sockpuppets, meatpuppets, etc. It just allows user groups to vote in their POV. I'll post a warning on the page. Asterion, one note. I hope you can get at least a bit of an impression that I want these pages to most fairly reflect these regions. Please feel free to message me also with such concerns. I know my "login" time is short, but I'm just trying my best. Apologies if I'm wary of Gryffindor.. but actions do speak louder than words. regards. Taalo 00:27, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Regardless, I'm learning a whole lot of stuff about my own region through all this. == Hi ==

You mention you have been to Croatia.
My guess is it would have been to Dalmatian Coast Croatia.
Have you been to the island of Korcula?

I would like to hear what you think about the possible Croatian origin of Marco Polo.

Eg British are often mistaken in the same way eg A Jones would be Welsh origin but some say English...hope you understand the confusion to an outsider.
Eg Columbus was said to be Spanish, but some say he was Italian and some even say Portuguese.

Re Polo i would think he was Venetian but if he was born in Korcula he was of Croat stock not Italian. Venetians were not just Italian, they were Croats and Albanians too.

It's much like Turkey, Italy, Greece etc....all those places share a common architecture etc....
What do you think of Marco Polo being of Croat origin?
I wanted to see what you thought.
Brits have Roman influence too...Croats have Venetian ....
Let me know what you think.

I just wanted to see if you we're aware of the idea that he might be of Croat origin.
Great to see.

People label the Croat theory as Croat Pov ...yet proof is shown by non Croat people such as Hart, Yule etc....

It's a bit like Columbus i guess..origin is ????

The Simpsons
Jagoda 1 23:41, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
During the early years of The Simpsons, a popular recurring gag involved Bart making prank calls to Moe's Tavern. This bit was inspired by the infamous Tube Bar prank calls of the 1970s. The calls usually followed a set pattern: Bart would ask for a non-existent person, Moe would shout loudly for the person Bart asked for, Moe catching on only after the bar (usually) erupts in uproarious laughter, and Moe threatening violent revenge upon catching the perpetrator. Moe never seemed to realize that it was Bart who made the call. Once Bart even told Moe that he made prank calls and Moe still did not catch on: Bart: "Well I make prank phone calls." Moe (in a happy voice one uses when talking to children): "Good for you."

Hi Asterion, we won't ever get a neutral solution this way with the region, province and town pages of this area. Can you help me get some mature and neutral admins involved? Someone that can help run the discussion maybe. I can see how there can be debate in using Trentino-Alto Adige or Trentino-South Tyrol. But for the province, it is definitely the Province of Bolzano. The area is South Tyrol, for sure, but we can't go renaming provinces and states to fit some users opinions. Everything is just being voted on by national lines almost. The funny thing is I have never seen an English map that has anything but Bolzano and Trento as the two provinces. We shouldn't use Wikipedia to try and rewrite things. I hope there are not many more cases of this on Wikipedia.. but somehow I'd guess there are a lot. Anyway, help us Asterion, please. Very few seem to want to look at both sides of the issue or even re-evaluate their opinions. take care. ciao. Taalo 17:04, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
:Hi Taalo. Personally, I agree that the province should be referred as Province of Bolzano, but the most common name in English for the area/region is South Tyrol. Regarding getting some admins involved, Dijxtra raised the issue in the Administrators' Noticeboard. If nothing happens, you could agree with all the other participants in the talk page to request mediation. I will be in Seville from this Saturday till Monday 16th, so I'm not really sure if I'll get a chance to check wikipedia at all. ::Hi Asterion, yup, we've already had someone come and offer to help find a solution. Feel really happy to see this sort of effort. Actually, have no disagreement with you. The province is Bolzano, the city is Bolzano, the area/region is Alto Adige-Suedtirol (aka South Tyrol). Hopefully we can come up with a way to have a province page like we have for every other Italian province, and at the same time have an section or page to discuss "South Tyrol" (though I feel most of this can be, and has been done, on Trentino-Alto Adige/Trentino-South Tyrol. :Officially, it is Arabic that is official. French is widely used in administrations and schools. We can't say Spanish is widely used w/o avoiding NPOV (i.e. including WS). Eventhough Spanish/Spain has many cultural influences it is not widely used or is a common language in Northern Morocco. Spanish terms are widely used (i.e. Nevera, caja, tabla, etc...), true but they are usually incorporated into Moroccan Arabic phrases. -- Szvest 00:52, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
::Sorry, Fayssal. I did not think about that. In any case, if you think thye infobox looks messy, maybe it makes sense to keep Arabic only and add the footnote for both Berber and French, as important but not not official. == Oscar Nunez ==

With all due respect, Mets501. Your comment when closing the WP:RM was strictly unnecessary ("It really doesn't matter: it's just a squigly line"). An administrator is not expected to take sides in that sense and/or using demeaning language towards one of the opinions expressed. I apology in advance if I misinterpreted your words. The proper use of diacritics in an encyclopedia such as Wikipedia is important indeed (systemic bias springs to mind). Aside a couple of border-line comments from Gene Nygaard addressed to the nominator User:DrBat, there were no incidences of uncivility either. If anything, editors should be commended for taking the steps to discuss the matter instead engaging on pointless edit wars (e.g. see Priština). Regards, <font color="Blue">Asterion</font><small><font color="Green">talk</font></small> 10:38, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
:Hi Asterion. I'm sorry that you took my words that way. I, if anyone, am someone who is quite concerned about diacritics. That was the primary reason I set up MetsBot, in fact: to fix diacritics (like this). I did not mean my comment to be demeaning towards either side, all I meant was that there is so much inconsistency with Nunez and Nuñez in the case of this actor that it was obvious that neither one was the wrong one, and way to much time had been spent arguing over it. If I were to have my personal opinion, it would definitely be to add the ñ, but being the closing administrator, I had to put my opinion aside and close the case. You are right, though, my words were a bit too harsh, considering there were no personal attacks or edit wars involved, so I've changed them. Thanks again. —<span style="font: small-caps 14px times; color: red;">Mets<small>501</small> (talk)</span> 10:58, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Asterion,

I would like to know: if User:Ew or User:Naconkantari is administrator, then why is administrator abusing "m" edit in wrong way repeatedly?? If admin can say that all edits are minor when fact is they change fundamental meaning of article, then all of us can. Why are both Ew and Naconkantari both using m every time even when edit is significant? This is violation is it not??? Bosna 23:46, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Please clarify m edit option. Please clarify if how Ew and Naconkantari use m edit is proper. Thank you. Bosna 00:02, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Morocco. Koavf

"People" whom Bart has asked for include:
Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Kosovo
* I.P. Freely - (I pee freely)
* Maya Buttreeks - (My butt reeks)
* Jacques Strappe – (jock strap)
* Ivanna Tinkle – (I wanna tinkle)
* Heywood U. Cuddleme – (Hey, would you cuddle me?)
* Amanda Huggenkiss – (A man to hug and kiss)
* Mike Rotch – (My crotch)
* Al Coholic – (Alcoholic)
* Bea O'Problem – (B.O. problem)
* Seymour Butz – (See more butts)
* Anita Bath – (I need a bath)
* Homer Sexual – (A homosexual)
* Lee V. Mediately - (Leave immediately)
* Eura Snotball - (You're a snotball)
* G.I. Manidiot - (Gee, I'm an idiot)
* Oliver Clothesoff (All of her clothes off!)
* Will U. P. Onme (Will you pee on me?)
* Hugh Jass (Huge ass)
* Ollie Tabooger (I'll eat a booger)
* Ahmed Adoudi (I made a doodie)

One backfire on this formula was a call to "Hugh Jass" (huge ass), as there turned out to be a person in the bar named Hugh Jass. Another backfire was when Homer was running the bar and didn't know how to carry out the prank when Bart asked for Ollie Tabooger (I'll eat a booger). A third was a time where Mr. Burns called Moe's by mistake while looking for Smithers, and was threatened by Moe who thought it was a prank call. Finally, in a flashback scene to Homer and Marge's youth, Marge tries to call Homer (whom she believes goes by the name "Elvis Jagger Abdul-Jabbar" because of his shyness), only to get Moe to threaten her when she asks for his name. After hanging up, Moe mutters "And that's the origin of that!"
This case is now closed and the results have been published at the link above.

Interestingly, in the video game The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants for NES and Genesis, you can make prank calls to Moe by putting a coin in the phone by Moe's Tavern. Examples of what Bart can say are I.M. Adope (I am a dope) and Stu Piddidiot. (stupid idiot)
For edit warring, personal attacks, and other disruption, PerfectStorm/C-c-c-c is banned from editing Wikipedia for one year. For edit warring and incivility, Bormalagurski is banned from editing Wikipedia from one year. For edit warring and disruptive use of sockpuppets, Dardanv under any username or IP, is banned from editing Wikipedia for one month.

Futurama
Hipi Zhdripi is limited to his one named account, Hipi Zhdripi. All edits by Hipi Zhdripi under another account or an IP address shall be treated as edits by a banned user.
A prank call leads to Fry's delivery of a pizza to a cryogenic lab, which sets the whole series in motion. The name used is I.C. Wiener (Meaning "I see Wiener" or "Icey wiener"), referring to the men frozen inside of the cryogenic chambers.

Fry also adopts a dog after receiving a prank call asking for a pizza to be delivered to a Seymour Asses (see more asses). Fry then names the dog Seymour following the prank call.
Ilir pz, Hipi Zhdripi, Vezaso are banned for one year from editing articles related to Kosovo. Relation to Kosovo is to be interpreted broadly so as to prevent gaming. Either may be banned from any related non-article page for disruptive editing. All articles related to Kosovo are put on Article probation to allow more swift dealing with disruption. Editors of Kosovo and related articles who engage in edit warring, incivility, original research, or other disruptive editing, may be banned for an appropriate period of time, in extreme cases indefinitely.

Reaction
ChrisO is warned not to engage in edit warring, and to engage in only calm discussion and dispute resolution when in conflict. He is instructed not to use the administrative rollback tool in content disputes and encouraged to develop the ability and practice of assisting users who are having trouble understanding and applying Wikipedia policies in doing so.
In the United States, prank calls are easily traced through Caller ID. It is possible that caller ID can reduce the number of prank calls. However, most telephone companies currently permit callers to withhold caller ID if they do not wish the called party to know their identity. In North America, there is a way to disable the victim's Caller ID by dialing *67 before dialing.

Sometimes the joke can be taken too far, especially if the prankster succeeds in making his victim believe the scenario is real. Prank call comedian Jim Florentine (who mainly takes incoming calls from telemarketers and turns the tables by performing pranks on them) has had the police called on him on more than one occasion for taking his jokes too far. During one call, Florentine tells an insurance agent that, rather than pay to keep an elderly woman alive, he is going to go to the hospital and smother her with a pillow. After the call, the agent called 9-1-1 and gave them Florentine's number and the address on file, and the police arrived at his home with guns drawn. However, when the police showed up and discovered it was actually a prank, the officer simply asked, "Don't you think you're a little old for this?"
Dardanv, Ferick, Laughing Man, Osli73, and Tonycdp are placed on Probation for one year. Each may be banned from any page or set of pages for disruptive edits, such as edit warring or incivility.

As A Crime
Ilir pz, Hipi Zhdripi, Vezaso, Dardanv, Ferick, Laughing Man, Osli73, and Tonycdp are placed on standard revert parole for one year. Each is limited to one revert per article per week, excepting obvious vandalism. Further, each is required to discuss any content reversions on the article's talk page.
Prank calls range from annoying hang-ups to false calls to emergency services or bomb threats. Prank calls that waste the time of emergency services are a criminal offense in most countries.

One such hoax call occurred in Perth, Australia, on New Year's Eve 2002, when a drunken teenager called the new anti-terrorist hotline to report a bomb threat against the New Year's Eve fireworks celebration. The threat was taken seriously, and the celebrations were about to be canceled, when police discovered that no such threat existed. The teen was arrested for deliberate false reporting.

Tension was also caused in December 2005, when a Catholic Church-owned radio station in Spain (COPE) played a prank on Bolivian president-elect Evo Morales. The hoaxer pretended to be Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, congratulating Morales on his election and saying things like, "I imagine the only one not to have called you was George Bush. I've been here two years and he still hasn't called me". The Bolivian government protested to Spain, and the real Zapatero called Morales and apologized. The Spanish government in turn summoned the papal nuncio in protest.
Muchas gracias
In the United States, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 makes some prank calls a felony with penalties of up to two years in prison, and possible fines (depending on severity). However, such penalties are rarely carried out. As an example, the Chicago shock jock Erich "Mancow" Muller, after being criticized for the extensive use of prank calls on his radio show, broadcasted the sarcastic remark: "Reality check for you people: Chicago's the murder capital of America. The police don't care if you get a prank call."

Moreover, to make a prank call that falls afoul of the Telecommunications Act, 47 (a)(1), the call must be done with the intent to "annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass". Arguably then, if the intent of the call is to amuse, confuse, or simply to engage the call's recipient, there is no violation of the Telecommunications Act.
