The videos are mostly "filmed" on the map [[Blood Gulch]], hence the name.

Dexter '''Grif''' (yellow-orange armor) is often picked on by Sarge and Simmons. Sarge often blames him for when things go wrong, and he and Simmons are almost always bickering or chatting. Grif is a brash loud mouth with a flair for the melodramatic, and tends to speak before he thinks. He's quick to make silly theories or insults, even towards people who clearly could easily kill him. He's also a bit of a coward, panicking and fleeing as soon as things start to get dangerous. He's no fool, however, and is often the first one to point out the flaws or stupidities in Sarge's latest plans (largely because Simmons never criticizes Sarge no matter what).

He never really says anything silly or dumb (except when he's kissing up to Sarge's flawed schemes), and frequently manages to come up with battle plans that actually work (however, since he's as lazy as most of the other Blood Gulch soldiers, he seldom does this except when absolutely necessary). After losing Lopez, Sarge turns Simmons into a Cyborg so he can repair stuff.

A serious, military-minded leader, he's probably the most disciplined character, never slacking off or wasting time like the other soldiers. Unfortunately, his battle plans tend to be seriously flawed (he once built a bomb that he wouldn't be able to defuse once activated, in case he got brainwashed into helping the other side). He's got above average amounts of anger and violence, and is probably the only Blood Gulch soldier on either team that's actually interested in pursuing the war. He hates Grif as much as he likes Simmons. He's also got good technical skills, being able to assemble robots from scratch and cybernetically augment his men.

Private '''Tucker''' (teal armor) is the most "average" member of Blue, not as hardened as Church but not as clueless as Caboose. He's very much an everyman. Like much of the cast, he's a sarcastic smart-aleck who dislikes combat and doing work, but doesn't have the obvious personality quirks that many of the other soldiers do, and he's reasonably smart and comes up with a couple decent plans. He hasn't yet been allowed to use the sniper rifle. Vic, O'Malley, and Wyoming all want him dead, because he accidentally discovered Vic's secret in Episode 38.

Red vs Blue tells the story of two opposing forces, the Red Army and the Blue Army, occupying small bases in a box canyon known as [[Blood Gulch]]. While both armies have standing orders to defeat the other team and capture their flag, the soldiers in the army are not very motivated to actually fight each other, and often wonder what they're doing there in the first place.

Red's base is named "Blood Gulch Outpost Number 1." Blue's base is named "Blood Gulch Outpost Alpha." Each team built its base because the other team was building a base.

In Season 2, both Red and Blue teams are plagued by a homicidal A.I. named O'Malley, who moves from body to body. In Season 3, O'Malley sets out to conquer the universe, and the Red and Blue teams call a truce and go after him, propeling them into different worlds outside Blood Gulch, and even into the future.

Screaming at the top of his lungs, he tries to tell everyone they've all been deceived ("It's all a lie! Red is Blue! Blue is Red! We're all the same! There's no Red vs. Blue!"), but he is suddenly gunned down before anyone can understand what he's yelling about. His killer is Doc, who is possessed by O'Malley. O'Malley starts flying around and firing rockets at everyone using the alien hovercraft. Everyone starts shooting at everyone else, and in the chaos O'Malley takes Lopez as a hostage, announces his intention to conquer the universe, and disappears through the teleporter. The Red and Blue teams call a temporary truce to pursue O'Malley and retrieve Lopez. Donut, Tex, and the tank remain behind while everyone else follows through the teleporter and ends up in different worlds.

"Teams! Shut up, teams are fine!", "n00b!", and "GG! GG!"). Simmons is lost in a place with lots of teleporters (the "Chiron TL34" map). Meanwhile, Sarge uses the microphones he installed in the robots in Episode 38 to talk with Donut; the plan works, except that Caboose also presses the button for the bomb in the other robot. Church, still imprisoned with Grif, belches and begins to tick...

'''''Episode 42''' - You're the Bomb, Yo:'' Simmons reprograms a teleporter, and walks Donut through how to reprogram the teleporter on his end. Wyoming, the assassin, visits Church and Grif and lets them know that he has killed everyone on Sidewinder and the two of them will be imprisoned forever because no one else knows where to find them; then he leaves them. Meanwhile, everyone else emerges from the teleporter on Sidewinder. Church and Grif's cell bars lift, releasing them. Wyoming spots Tucker from afar and aims at him; Tex holds a gun to Wyoming's head to stop him, but then O'Malley - who has teamed up with Wyoming - holds a gun to hers.

'''''Episode 43''' - Make Your Time:'' O'Malley activates Lopez's "secret weapon," a weather control device. The Red and Blue teams join forces to confront O'Malley, but he just pulls out a rocket launcher and starts blasting everyone, forcing them all to dive for cover. But before he can kill anyone, Simmons opens a portal and calls in the reds and the blues from Battle Creek (Episodes 39 and 40) and tells them that O'Malley has the flag, and they attack him. Unable to disable the bomb in Church's body, Tucker aims a rocket launcher at him to kill him before the bomb goes off, but Wyoming snipes the launcher out of Tucker's hand, and the bomb explodes. The combination of the explosion and the weather control device causes a distortion of reality, sending Donut, Grif, Sarge, Tucker, and Caboose to a ruined future (using the Halo 2 engine). Donut, Grif, Sarge and Caboose put on a skit to explain what happened to Tucker, who had been unconscious for some time. They decide that they were blown into the future because they were standing in front of Church, and they conclude that he must have been blown into the past. Church is then seen as a [[Marathon (computer game)|Marathon]] character, all alone on a Marathon 2 map, wondering what just happened.

The gang find a jeep, and bicker over what to do with it. Tucker wants to find a way to rescue Church, but Sarge believes that Church was killed in the bomb explosion, but tells Tucker that at least Church killed all of their enemies when he blew up. He convinces the Red Zealot that he is the Gatekeeper, the Red Zealot believing that he has reached the Promised Land where God Himself resides, and plots to manipulate the Red Zealot into being another pawn in his plot for Galactic domination. After letting the Red Zealot into the Fortress O'Malley catches a glimpse of another soldier spying upon him and Lopez (The spy is later revealed to be Tex). The scene then switches to Sarge, Grif, and Simmons discussing the results of Grif and Simmons failed reconaissance and, while attempting to push the Warthog out of the ditch Grif drove it into, receive a transmission from Tex informing them of O'Malleys ___location and plans. There is no central reticle visible in this episode.

'''''Episode 47''' - It's a biological fact:'' The gang meets up with Tex on the beach at Zanzibar where she reveals her plan to destroy both O'Malley and the entire base by planting a bomb at a specific ___location within the facility. Tex has previously scouted the base and found the exact ___location for the bomb to be placed, but was unable to plant it herself because of the bomb's immense weight. It takes Caboose (who turns out to have incredible strength, which Tucker attributes as "God's way of compensating") to lift it. However, this contradicts an earlier episode (Episode 17) where it is Tex who has the immense strength which awes Caboose (of course Caboose, not being very bright, probably wouldn't know his own strength anyway). Meanwhile Lopez, Doc and O'Malley complain to each other about the Red Zealot, whom they have tricked into doing manual labour for them. The Zealot mentions in passing conversation that there is a crowd of people gathering on the beach (the Reds and Blues), alerting O'Malley to their presence. When the Reds learn that Lopez is with O'Malley, they protest at destroying Lopez as he carries information valuble to the Red Team. Tex refuses to jeopardize the destruction of the greatest threat they know (O'Malley) in order to save one teammate. However, Tucker tells the Reds that they can simply hire Tex to help them retrieve Lopez (As a merc, Tex will do anything for money. When she disputes this, Tucker demonstrates by saying "I'll give you $10 to tear off Grif's arm" to which she replies "which one's Grif?") Tex makes them a deal: she'll retrive Lopez's head before they detonate the bomb, and they'll owe her a favor in the future. Again the central reticle in not visible.
