The San Diego Zoo is one of the largest, most progressive zoos in the world. It is a private zoo, owned and maintained by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego.

The Zoo advertises high-profile animal exhibits like its panda, polar bear, tiger and gorilla exhibits in the same breathless way that nearby amusement parks (such as Disneyland) tout roller coasters. It uses the profits from its attractions to maintain the animals and support zoological education, science and conservation. For example, it maintains the Center for the Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES), literally the last chance for many species.

George Nelson Tremper High School was named after Mr. George Nelson Tremper, who was the principal of Kenosha High School from 1911 to 1944. The 272,786 square foot Tremper High School was completed in the fall of 1964 and opened in January 1966. The first class to graduate from Tremper High School did so in June 1965. Tremper High School was designed by John J. Flad Architects in Madison, Wisconsin, and built by Camosy Incorporated, Kenosha, Wisconsin, for a cost of approximately $4,860,000. The Tremper Trojans compete in the WIAA Southeast Conference.
The cool, sunny maritime climate is well suited to many plants and animals. Besides an extensive collection of birds, reptiles and mammals, it also maintains its grounds as an arboretum, with a rare plant collection. As part of its gardening effort, it raises some rare animal foods. For example, the Zoo raises bamboo for the pandas on long-term loan from China, and it maintains eucalyptus trees to feed its koalas.

Tremper High School is a comprehensive high school in a diversely supportive and respectful environment that encourages students to succeed in core and elective subjects while developing life skills and experiences through intense study, exploration of personal talents, and a commitment to life-long learning.
It is sited on 47 acres in Balboa Park, on the edge of a mesa. The flat upland areas are the parking lot. Most exhibits are sited in cool, shaded valleys, with large aviaries and animal exhibits on the ridges. The zoo rotates larger animals to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and has some of the largest free-flight aviaries in existence to encourage breeding. Many exhibits are "natural" with invisible wires and darkened blinds (to view birds), and pools and open-air moats (for large mammals).

Tremper is part of Kenosha Unified School District.
The Zoo is large enough so that it cannot be comfortably visited on foot in one day. The guided tour bus is strongly recommended for visitors with limited time, not least because the drivers are familiar with the animals. An overhead cable car is pleasant. Also, the Zoo provides society memberships for only a slight premium over the (steep) admission fees. Society memberships provide year-round re-entrance rights, guest passes and a subscription to the Zoo's magazine ZooNews.

ComedyImprov
In addition to its normal publicity efforts, and web page, the Zoo also produced a short TV program for a number of years, with Joan Embry. Joan Embry is the keeper who brought various animals to the Johnny Carson show. The Zoo loaned the animals.
Founded in the '06-'07 school year, ComedyImprov club is rapidly emerging as the newest trendsetter and most emulated and revered group at the school. According to an inside source, ComedyImprov is "without a doubt the highlight of high school life." The group is planning on hosting a "comedy night" in the Fall of 2007, with the catchy slogan "We're as pure as Ivory Soap." 94 and 47/100 of the profits will be donated to a local charity. This troupe participates in ComedySportz events as well. Also, they aren't funny.

The Classic
The Zoo's food for humans is pleasant, fast, informal... health food, some of the best anywhere. There are persistent rumours that it was designed by veterinary nutritionists for human consumption, and goes through the same purchasing process.
Tremper's yearbook, advised by Sandy Jacoby, is a perennial award winner at the JEA/NSPA Best of Show Competitions. For the past ten years, the Classic has continuously placed in the top ten of the competition, with the last five years of books ranking in the top five. Tremper's 2002 Yearbook, Coming Up for Air, was awarded First Place Best of Show in April 2003 in Portland. Most recently, on April 14, the 2006 Classic, Shift Within, placed second in Denver.

Tremper Mascot
The Zoo is private, and unlike government zoos it does not tolerate even accidental abuse of its animals. Visitors are commanded not to feed the animals and doing so can get one ejected. However, some exhibits are designed to let visitors feed animals approved foods from nearby vending machines. Visitors are politely commanded not to remove human food from the controlled restaurant and picnic areas, and can expect to be stopped by guards if they carry food around the zoo. Common conveniences like straws and caps for the cups are intentionally not provided in order to prevent harm to the animals.
The mascot of Tremper is the Trojan, after the foe of the greeks in mythology. The trojans were stupid, and gullibly fell for the Trojan Horse gambit, thus getting themselves slaughtered and losing the war.
A different tradition that emerges at the basketball games is a penguin known as "Hootie." It is a plastic figurine that is rumored to be the object of worship in some of the school's circles. A lesser known mascot is Sparky, a lighter located in the Mens locker-room and used to light random things on fire in pre-game rituals for various male sports.

Tremper and Wikipedia
The zoo is extremely active in conservation and species-preservation efforts. Its Center for the Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES) raises and releases California Condors, Pandas, Tigers, African Black Rhinos and a large number of other endangered species. It employes numerous professional geneticists, cytologists and vertinarians, and maintains a cryopreservation facility for rare sperm and eggs.
As of 3/19/07, the Kenosha Unified School District filter has restricted access to the site known as Wikipedia citing that the site is "an unreliable source of information." Tremper and other Unified students are urged to use other purchased reference tools, such as World Book Encyclopedia that are "not prone to subversive manipulation," stated in the Kenosha News.

Tremper Academic Progress
The Zoo interns only selected graduates of the Veterinary College of the University of California at Davis. Its keepers are unionized.
The school emblazoned vapid slogans on gawdy posters in every room such as "Learning No Matter What!," "Making Thinking Visible!," and other empty statements with bombastic rhetoric similar to the mission statement above.

Another "progressive" movement includes the renaming of every conceivable part of the school into some euphemistic expression. For example, the "Main Office" is now the "Student Learning Headquarters."
The Zoo literally counts its animals as priceless. It carries the value of its animals and plants as zero dollars, which means they cannot be seized because of a bankruptcy, and could therefore be distributed to other zoos. All loans and encumbrances are on its land and vehicles.

Additionally, Tremper this past year instituted a schedule employing "intervention time," another corporatese euphemism. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, no advisory is held. Instead, the school leaves thirty minutes early. Those who are failing a class are required to attend "interventions." Whether grades have improved as a result of this tutoring is debated, as is the question of whether the complicated logistics of a layered schedule is worthwhile.

Ducks
Mallard ducks roam the school's courtyard in the spring. 85% of students think that they are "cute." According to another survey of Tremper High School students only 2% of statistics are made up.

Tremper Groups and Clubs
During the 2006-2007 school year, Tremper witnessed the birth of the disk golf club, nOObs (Never Obstruct Our Beautiful Shots) lead by Mr. Kieler and Mr. McKim. The group was made of mostly seniors: Alex Gentze, Ian Carson, Ryan Deeter, John Moorehouse, Devon Armstrong, Jared Frost, Steve Horn and Mike Cadiz so they fear it will not meet again next year.

Tremper Tennis
Both girls and boys tennis teams made it to team state in the '06-07 school year; each also placed several flights in the individual tournament. Rosters are available on the WIAA site. In a recent interview, one anonymous player on the boys team stated "The accusations of cannibalism to promote team-building and nutritional values are completely unfounded."
