Archive 1: Join date - February 11, 2007
This article lists colleges and universities whose qualifications may possibly not be accepted by civil service or other employers. These institutions may have been listed on publicly available lists of unaccredited institutions, or are absent from the UNESCO list of world universities (see "external links" at the bottom of this article). Some are also suspected of being diploma mills, while others are no longer in existence. Several unaccredited universities have names chosen because they are similar to those of accredited institutions or falsely imply that it is a public university.

Death Note characters
Therefore, taking the legal issues mentioned below into account, this list should not necessarily be viewed as complete or authoritative.

I did not check the history page and did not see that kana in every name is not needed. Sorry about that! :D I was trying to improve the overall article. I still feel that the kana is necessary. Thanks for your comments in the edit summary. Please accept my apologies for any edits that I made. All the best for the rest of May. Sjones23 20:07, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I also apologize for any rudeness or sarcasm. I haven't destroyed anything nor have I done anything wrong. Sjones23 20:55, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
United States of America
In the United States, unaccredited degrees may not be acceptable for state or federal civil service or other employment; in certain cases and circumstances, criminal penalties may even apply should such a degree be presented in lieu of a degree from an accredited institution. However, such degrees are illegal only in Oregon, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, North Dakota and Nevada, where they are considered as misdemeanors mostly punishable by relatively small fines .

Thanks for your comments, both on the article, David Hoope and its talk page. Once again, please accept my apologies. As you said, David Hoope is a romanized English name (featured in all anime and manga, but the kana doesn't exist, except for the Japanese interwiki website and other Japanese sources). Thanks again for all of your comments and everything you have done for me. :D All the best for the upcoming summer Sjones23 00:54, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
In addition, it has been reported that some of these unaccredited schools have successfully objected against such laws, the most notable being Wyoming-based Kennedy-Western University, which sued Oregon to cease listing it as a diploma mill in 2004 , claiming that its degree-holders had a First Amendment right to say they were degree-holders. However, the case did not result in a trial as the University and the Oregon Department of Justice reached an out-of-court settlement (only affecting Kennedy-Western).

A Barnstar for you!
According to the settlement, Kennedy-Western degree-holders may now say that they have degrees when applying for jobs in the private sector in Oregon, but they must also reveal that Kennedy-Western is unaccredited in all job applications, resumes, business cards and advertising that mentions the degree. Public employment and licensed professions are excepted from the agreement.

{| style="border: 1px solid {gray}; background-color: {#fdffe7};"
Oregon now lists Kennedy-Western as "unaccredited," stating that its "degrees do not meet requirements for employment by State of Oregon or for work in any profession licensed by the State of Oregon for which a degree is required" .

Australia and New Zealand
It has also been reported that the University of Newlands, a school that was listed as a "wannabe" or "degree mill" by The Australian newspaper, was given permission by the New Zealand High Court to proceed to trial in its suit against the paper's publisher for defamation. However, the presiding judge did state that such degrees may be illegal and that purporting to offer such degrees could be deemed dishonest or unethical conduct. He also ruled that defamation occurs in the country where the material is downloaded from the Internet. As of August 2004, no court date had yet been set for the actual trial .

Ah, I see where the confusion lies. In American English (I gather you are from Canada), commas always go inside the quotation marks. How exactly are these disputes setled on Wikipedia? Obviously there are folks from America, Canada, the UK, ect. Is there a concensus on which type of English is to be used?
South Korea
And I'm working on posting my argument against Death Note 13's names. I'm looking for certain images to post since I don't have a scanner of my own.
It is illegal to falsely claim a degree in South Korea if it does not meet accredited approval. For example, in March of 2006 prosecutors in Seoul "broken up a crime ring selling bogus music diplomas from Russia, which helped many land university jobs and seats in orchestras." People who falsely used these degrees were criminally charged.

Good day, sir!
United Kingdom
In the UK it is illegal to offer a qualification that is or might seem to be UK degree unless the body offering it is on a statutory list maintained by the Department for Education and Skills. Prosecutions under the Education Reform Act are rare, as many of the bodies on the internet are based outside UK jurisdiction.

Chibi Gohan 02:53, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Prosecutions under other legislation do occur. In 2004 Thames Valley College in London was prosecuted under the Trade Descriptions Act for offering degrees from the 'University of North America', a limited liability company set up by themselves in the US with no academic staff and no premises other than a mail forwarding service.

Warning signs
:: Main articles: Diploma mill, school accreditation, and US Department of Education
Not every unaccredited school is a diploma mill - all schools start out unaccredited. These are some of the warning signs which may indicate a diploma mill:
* It lacks accreditation by a nationally recognized accrediting agency, especially if it is accredited by an accreditation mill.
* Words denoting a legal status such as "licensed," "state authorized" or "state-approved" are misused to suggest an equivalence to accreditation.
* The address is a postal box or mail forwarding service.
* Promotional literature contains grammatical and spelling errors, words in Latin, extravagant or pretentious language, and sample diplomas.
* Degrees can be obtained within a few weeks or months from the time of enrollment, back-dating is possible.
* Faculty members hold advanced degrees from the institution itself or similar organizations.
* Academic credit is offered for life experience, and this features heavily in the selling points of the institution.
* Tuition and fees are paid on a degree basis rather than on a per-semester, per-quarter or per-course basis.
* Prospective students are encouraged to "enroll now" before tuition or fees are increased, or they qualify for a "fellowship," "scholarship" or "grant."
* It has no library.
* Doctoral theses and dissertations are not lodged with the Library of Congress or other national repository

About Mikami's Deletion: How come you're sourcing the English manga now? I thought the Japanese version was the precedent.

Barnes & Noble early manga releases
Dunno why, but I have noticed that B&N likes to ignore the street date on quite a few manga, at least in some stores. I bring this up because I remember a quick thing a month or so back on the Bleach page where I said a volume was out because it was at B&N and you reverted me. Looks like it happened again recently on that page, although I'm not sure if the person who added it got it from B&N. I have already seen Bleach 19 on sale there. Maybe you should add something to the talk page or a hidden inline comment saying that the number of volumes out shouldn't change until the official street date or something... --<font color="gold">Ghost</font><font color="blue">Stalker</font><small>(Got a present for ya! | Mission Log)</small> 16:46, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Gackt article
I'm sorry, but the article's previous approach towards the artist's year of birth was in no way compliant with WP:V, WP:RS and most importantly, WP:BLP. No matter what "consensus" has previously been reached on the talk page, in order for the previous status quo to be acceptable with regard to Wikipedia policy, one would have to provide reliable sources for the following assertions:

* The artist has made a thorough effort to keep his year of birth a secret. Just not mentioning it on his website hardly qualifies as thorough.
* There are indeed conflicting sources for the year of birth (IMDB, while nice to have for some information, remains a user edited site) and hence a genuine controversy on the matter exists.
* The artist ever made this outlandish Norwegian vampire statement and on more than one occasion, lest it cannot be dismissed as an out-of-context or offhand joke.

Until these sources are provided, the year 1973 is backed by a perfectly acceptable source and on top of that, the article looks a lot less like someone just could not resist the urge to emphasize on just how very mysterious and special the artist at hand really really is. Have a nice day - Cyrus XIII 23:51, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Maybe it would be better if you wait a little while until I finished typing the talk section before reverting. It happens that I am not a strong supporter and thus did nothing like reverting the page immediately, if it happens to be a strong supporter, you might face an edit war, and you were on the 3rd revert(actually, 5th on the overall reverting), thus violating the 3RR rule. It would be more polite to wait for the discussion, if the editor has says so on the comment. Anyhow, just telling you about this, I don't care if spoiler tags are there or not. :The revert I made and the talk page entry is only 5 minutes time lag, it is also due to a server too busy database lock that delayed it for another 2 minutes. Yes, you are right, I can make the talk entry first, that would make more sense, I agree with you, but still, if something like this happens, at least wait for 5~10 minutes before reverting, that makes a lot of difference. At least it minimize the number of edits and talks like this. MythSearchertalk 17:08, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I should have taken it to somewhere else, the talk page or reported the user's actions or something instead of just reverting constantly, though I did try to discuss it on one of the IP talk pages for the anon in question only to have my comment vandalised by that anon, but I do realize I was still in the wrong with what I did, as much as he was, and I need a wikibreak anyway. I shouldn't have let it get to me so much. Thanks, though. :) Nique <small>talk</small> 17:41, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Light's Death
We've long since decided that Matsuda didn't kill him - Why didn't you say so earlier then?
Can I get a link to the discussion, I couldn't find a suitable heading in the archives of Talk:List of characters in Death Note either. Thanks --eZio 19:19, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

:As far as I understand, Shinigami(Gods of Death) as their name suggests are beings who take your life (soul) after your lifespan is over and then do whatever they are supposed to do with it. They don't decide when one dies. This is from mythology, not Death Note. So in essence even though a person might be dying say by falling off a cliff or by a gunshot wound, it is the God of Death who actually kills him by taking the soul. This is why I am confused about the whole "Who Killed Light Issue". Now coming to Death Note, I've seen the last episode and the reason of death can be speculative to say the least. No one can prove that the shots fired by Matsuda were fatal or not. I mean how can one? It's an anime. And neither does the anime show Ryuk's note with Light written on it, they show him writing something, but nothing explicit like showing the name actually written. Now this might sound cheesy, but so does the claim of Matsuda not firing at him in critical areas. I'm not trying to prove that Matsuda killed him. I'm merely suggesting it as a possiblity. Don't you think there is the slightest possiblity that Matsuda's shot were fatal, and since Light's lifespan was coming to and end, Ryuk was doing his part of bieng a Shinigami and hence writing his name in his note? -eZio 21:12, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Apology for edit war
Just wanted to apologize for causing you any mental pain over the edit war, should've just went to the discussion page from the beginning. I understand what you mean with the official release dates being important, just that we think a little different on what was important. Again, just wanted to say sorry for being rude about it, I let my temper get to me, and it's sort of sad it was over such a silly thing. I still think when I edited my Talk Page that was hilarious. On the same topic, I was being very immature, and thus I apologize again. We both looked kinda stupid with what we did, so, how about next time we work together to make wikipedia a better place instead of another edit war, deal?.
