PlotEarly life
spoiler
Plankton has stolen King Neptune's crown. SpongeBob and Patrick must brave the mysterious town of Shell City to find it. Plankton, meanwhile, has gotten control of Krab's secret Krabby Patty formula. His restaurant, The Chum Bucket, finally becomes popular. With each meal, Plankton hands out a free bucket hat. These bucket hats end up actually being mind control devices and Plankton takes control of Bikini Bottom while King Neptune II mourns his lost crown.

He was born to a Tagalog father and a Spanish mestiza mother, Catalina de Castro of Zambales, in Tondo, Manila. His father was a cabeza de barangay (a leading barangay official). He was orphaned at a young age. According to popular anecdote, he peddled canes and fans to support his family.
Detailed synopsis
The film opens with a group of live action pirates finding tickets to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. After singing the theme song in a sea shanty, they plow into the theater just as the movie begins.

Later, he worked as a clerk in a British firm in Manila. He married twice - his first wife was a woman named Monica, who died of leprosy. He read books about the French Revolution, Les Miserables, and the novels of local reformist and future national hero Jose Rizal, among others.
SpongeBob, new manager of the Krusty Krab, confronts a dire situation: a customer ordered a Krabby Patty with cheese, but didn't get his cheese. Spongebob goes in and puts cheese on the patty. Everyone gives three cheers for Spongebob, but the cheers are actually his alarm clock ringing, waking him up from his dream.

According to historians, Bonifacio - though projected by detractors as being unlettered - was in fact very literate because a British firm would not have hired him as a clerk if he was not. He was also highly intellectual to be keeping serious novels and political books, many were not even written in his native tongue. He also authored countless articles and poems in the course of organizing the revolution.

He was a Freemason. He also joined Rizal's La Liga Filipina (Spanish "The Philippine League"), a society that called for reforms in Spanish rule. However, the Liga was disbanded shortly after Rizal was arrested and deported to the town of Dapitan in Mindanao a day after the group's only meeting.
SpongeBob runs to the Krusty Krab, sure that he'll be the one Mr. Krabs chooses as manager of the "Krusty Krab 2"; Krabs has opened a second Krusty Krab right next to the first one so he could get more money. A crowd has gathered, ready to learn the name of the manager. SpongeBob is sure he'll win the position, but his dreams are quickly shattered when Mr. Krabs announces Squidward as the new manager. Apparently, SpongeBob isn't mature enough to handle the great responsibility. Heartbroken, he sadly walks into the sunset.

The Katipunan
Meanwhile, across the street in the Chum Bucket, Plankton looks through his evil plans to get the secret recipe of the Krabby Patty. Plans A through Y have all failed miserably, and Plankton considers giving up once and for all, when his computer wife Karen points out that he hasn't tried Plan Z yet. Excited, Plankton gets things ready.
The Republika ng Katagalugan (Tagalog Republic), with him as President and the members of the Katipunan high council as his cabinet. "Tagalog", in this sense, was a term used to refer to the Philippines as a whole, not the ethnic group.

On the night of July 7, 1892 (the eve of Rizal's arrest, in fact), Bonifacio founded the Katipunan, a revolutionary secret society which would later spark the Philippine Revolution of 1896 against Spanish rule. In this period, he met his second wife, Gregoria de Jesus, who became a rebel leader in her own right. His right-hand man was Emilio Jacinto. Within the society, Bonifacio's codename or nom de guerre was Maypagasa (There is hope).
At Goofy Goober's Ice Cream Party Boat (a spoof of Chuck E. Cheese's), SpongeBob and Patrick's new favorite undersea hangout, SpongeBob sulks at the nut bar with Patrick. The duo drowns their sorrows in ice cream and get completely "drunk" (it should be noted that while older people may understand what is happening in the movie, most younger children probably won't).

With the establishment of the Katipunan, Andrés Bonifacio became popularly known as the Father of the Revolution and eventually held the title of Supremo.
Meanwhile, Plankton sneaks into King Neptune II's castle and steals his crown. Neptune (Jeffrey Tambor) is more angered at not having anything to cover his bald spot than at having the symbol of his power stolen. He discovers a note Plankton planted on the scene framing Mr. Krabs. At the Krusty Krab, Krabs denies Neptune's accusations up and down. Neptune isn't fazed when Krabs receives a phone call from a guy in Shell City (apparently a terrible place because even Neptune fears it) thanking him for the crown. SpongeBob pleads with Neptune to let him and Patrick find the crown for him. Neptune agrees and gives the duo six days to find it, with Mr. Krabs' life at stake (Neptune actually freezes Krabs in the spot where he stands, and will not unfreeze him unless his crown is returned). SpongeBob and Patrick bust out the Patty Wagon, a new Krusty Krab promotional vehicle, and head out on the open road.

He wrote the patriotic poem, Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa (loosely, Love for the Motherland), which saw print in the first and only issue of the Katipunan periodical, Kalayaan (Freedom), edited by Jacinto. Allegedly, he also made the first translation of Jose Rizal's final poem, Mi Ultimo Adios (My Last Farewell) into Tagalog.
At the county line, they run into a couple of hillbilly fish, who warn them not to go past the line. Of course, they don't listen, and quickly get their ride stolen by a thug. After a day of walking, they find their car at the Thug Tug, a rough and tough joint, the toughest of whose patrons is the fish Victor. Unable to get the key off the fish that stole it, they head to the bathroom and have a random bubble party. Apparently the tough fish find bubbles to be for little kids, and the manager demands to know who blew the bubble. The test: play the Goofy Goober theme song, and whoever can't resist singing it will be the culprit. SpongeBob and Patrick struggle not to sing along, and breathe a collective sigh of relief when another tough fish sings the song. While the unfortunate fish is beaten by his friends (thanks to a rule in the bar), Patrick steals the key back, and the duo head off.

Just before the Revolution broke out, he formed a revolutionary government called "Republika ng mga Katagalugan" with himself as the president.

Downfall
Back in Bikini Bottom, Plankton steals the Krabby Patty secret formula and starts churning out patties at the Chum Bucket. People are loving it, of course, eating their Krabby Patties and wearing their new Chum Bucket helmets. Squidward knows something is up, but has no time to snitch to Neptune, as the Chum Bucket helmets begin mind controlling their wearers.

While Bonifacio's personal campaigns were less than successful, the revolutionaries in Cavite had greater success, led by officers coming from the upper classes, including the celebrated Emilio Aguinaldo. Thus, they sent out a manifesto calling for a revolutionary government of their own, disregarding Bonifacio's leadership.
SpongeBob and Patrick drive through a field of skulls when they encounter a little old lady giving away free ice cream. However, the old lady is actually the tongue of a giant frogfish, who chases the duo until it is eaten by a bigger monster in a monster-filled trench. Stuck with no way to get over the trench, SpongeBob and Patrick break down, realizing they really are just kids. Neptune's daughter Mindy (Scarlett Johansson) shows up to help the kids regain their confidence by showing them the fate of the Bikini Bottomers, nothing but slaves to Plankton, and uses her "mermaid magic" to turn the duo into men. In actuality, she just sticks seaweed moustaches on their faces while their eyes are closed. She also gives them a bag of winds, which they are to use to get back to Bikini Bottom once her father's crown is regained.

A council comprising of Bonifacio's men and the Magdalo and the Magdiwang, two locally-based rival Katipunan factions, held a convention in Tejeros, Cavite to establish a unified front and settle the issue of leadership of the revolutionary movement. The Magdalo faction was led by Baldomero Aguinaldo, cousin to Emilio Aguinaldo. In the elections, the Cavitenos voted their own Emilio Aguinaldo President. Bonifacio, due to the lack of a power base in the province, was voted Director of the Interior.
Convinced that they're finally men, they jump into the trench and bravely burst right through it, singing all the way. The monsters, impressed by their manliness, follow them and sing along, instead of devouring them.

However, a member of the Magdalo faction, Daniel Tirona, questioned Bonifacio's qualifications for high office, declaring him uneducated and unfit for the position. Bonifacio was slighted, all the more so since he had previously asked that the results of the election be respected by all. Invoking his authority as Supremo, he threatened those in attendance with a pistol and declared the results of the Tejeros Convention as null and void and left in a rage. Later, he wrote to Jacinto about his misgivings about the whole matter, as he suspected Tirona of spreading black propaganda against him and fixing the ballots (as some other leaders also suspected).
Plankton's hired hitman, Dennis (Alec Baldwin), suddenly appears, ready to exterminate SpongeBob and Patrick. However, a scuba diver squishes Dennis and abducts the duo. When they wake up, they find themselves at a gift shop on dry land known as Shell City. Right across from their fish bowl is King Neptune's crown. The evil scuba diver (the "Cyclops") sets them on a table to dry them out. They realize that the gift shop is, in fact, Shell City, and "die" happily, singing the Goofy Goober Song. Back in the theater, the pirates mourn the loss of SpongeBob and Patrick, when a parrot advises them to continue watching the film. The duo's tears land on the plug, short circuiting the lamp. The smoke causes the fire sprinkler to activate, bringing all of the gift shop items to life including, for some reason, a mariachi band made from fish. As they attack the scuba diver, SpongeBob and Patrick get the crown and make it back to the sea.
It is believed the Supremo from this point headed towards Batangas to lead another Katipunan faction where he would establish his own government. Word of this got back to the Magdalo group. In fear of a separate rival government along with an ongoing revolution, Aguinaldo ordered the arrest of Bonifacio and his brothers. The Magdalo soldiers caught up with Bonifacio in the town of Indang. They surrounded the house and asked Bonifacio and his men to disarm and come out peacefully. Bonifacio refuted and stated that bullets would settle this matter. The stand off lasted through the night.

At dawn, the soldiers closed in and opened fire. Bonifacio ordered his men not to shoot. His men yelled, "Brothers, don't shoot! Tell us what you want?" The soldiers made their way in. Procopio Bonifacio was tied up and beaten with a revolver. Ciriaco Bonifacio was held down by two soldiers and shot to death. Bonifacio was stabbed and beaten with a rifle butt. Gregoria de Jesus(wife of Andres Bonifacio) recounted that after the capture of the Supremo, the leading officer approached her, asking where they had stashed the Treasury money.

The brothers were taken to Naic and tried in a kangaroo court headed by General Mariano Noriel. Both were charged with treason and sedition, punishment was death by firing squad. In Emilio Aguinaldo's biography, Aguinaldo claims he superseded this judgment and ordered the Supremo to be exiled and banished to Mt. Nagpatong. Major Lazaro Makapagal, along with four soldiers, was given orders to lead the Bonifacio brothers to Mt. Nagpatong. Makapagal was also given a sealed envelope with strict orders not to open it until they reached the mountains. On May 10, 1897, at Mt. Nagpatong, Major Lazaro Makapagal opened the letter, faced the Supremo and his brother, and read its contents aloud. Andres and Procopio were to be executed by firing squad or he himself would be shot. It was signed by General Mariano Noriel. Makapagal turned his back and his soldiers opened fire on the Bonifacio brothers. The Supremo was only 34 years old. Fearing their gunfire being heard by Spanish forces, they quickly dug a shallow grave and covered the two bodies with twigs and branches. Co-patriots of the Revolution regarded this an ugly blot laid at Aguinaldo's door, though Aguinaldo originally wanted them banished instead.
It is the final day, and Mr. Krab's execution is close at hand unless Mindy can stall her father long enough.

In 1918, an expedition lead by one of the former soldiers found the grave of Andres Bonifacio. His remains were exhumed and placed in a urn at the Legislative Building (today National Museum) in Manila. In 1945, near the end of WWII during the Battle of Manila, the building was completely destroyed. The Supremo's remains are lost forever.
Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick try to get back to Bikini Bottom with the crown, but the bag of winds blows away as Patrick tries to use it. Things apparently are hopeless.

Controversy
Suddenly, David Hasselhoff appears out of nowhere to save the day, more than willing to help SpongeBob and Patrick get back to Bikini Bottom. Happy that their luck is still with them, the two friends take to the water on Hasselhoff's legs as he speeds through the water like a powerboat.
Some historians, like Renato Constantino, see him as a champion of the masses who was slighted by ambitious members of the upper class. Others like Gregorio Zaide, favor Aguinaldo and company over him. Glenn May goes as far as saying that his role as a national hero was largely invented. Also, there is debate whether he should be considered the first Philippine President instead of Aguinaldo and the national hero instead of Rizal until now.

Some analytical historians, claim that what happened at Tejeros, Cavite was actually a coup de etat to wrest power from Bonifacio by the bourgeois or upper class represented by Aguinaldo. (Aguinaldo and members of his class enjoyed more privilege status even before the revolution. They would not allow a victorious president Bonifacio ordering land and wealth distribution as his first decree.) Hence, the Tejeros Convention was a farce intended to lure Bonifacio to the Caviteño territory. The presidential election wasn't a national election at all. Participated only by mostly Caviteños. The other revolting provinces such as Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Laguna, Batangas, and others, were not participants. Bonifacio, who was too fueled with idealism, was too naive to understand maneuvering politicians. Bonifacio was not allowed to get out of Cavite. He was tried then executed promptly for treason. Many now asks: Had Bonifacio able to slip to Manila could he have declared that the Aguinaldo was the one who betrayed the revolution?
However, during the ride, Dennis makes his return. The ultimate battle begins on Hasselhoff's bottom. SpongeBob and Patrick try to keep from being stabbed, and they keep the hitman distracted long enough for him to hit the bottom of a boat and fall off. Hasselhoff uses his pecs to shoot the duo down through the roof of the Krusty Krab just as Mr. Krabs is about to fry. Plankton has an ace up his sleeve, though, and ambushes Neptune with a Chum Bucket helmet! Now everyone in town is a slave to Plankton: Plan Z has all but succeeded. But before the good guys can lose, SpongeBob uses the Goofy Goober song and the power of rock and roll to destroy all of the mind control helmets and save the day.

Today
Neptune's crown is back, Mr. Krabs is free, Plankton is arrested, SpongeBob and Patrick are men, and SpongeBob finally fulfils his dream by becoming manager of the Krusty Krab 2. At that point, the pirates are forced to leave the movie theater.

Bonifacio's birthday on November 30 is celebrated as Bonifacio Day (Filipino: Araw ni Bonifacio) and is a public holiday in the Philippines.

There are many monuments to Bonifacio across the nation, with the most famous being two sculptures, one by Napoleon Abueva and the other by Guillermo Tolentino, both National Artists.

In current Philippine currency, he is depicted in the 10-peso bill (currently out of production) and 10-peso coin, along with fellow patriot Apolinario Mabini.
Reception
The movie earned $85,416,609 in the United States and $135,311,137 worldwide as of March 24, 2005. On Rotten Tomatoes, The film got a Fresh 70% rating with 76 fresh reviews out of 109.

SoundtrackIn film
Bonifacio was portrayed by Julio Diaz in Bayani (Hero), a feature film loosely based on his life directed by experimental auteur Raymond Red, and an educational television series also named Bayani.

*The teaser trailer uses footage from Das Boot, The Hunt for Red October, and U-571.
*The original "cover-up" plot of the film had SpongeBob going to rescue Patrick from a fisherman in Florida. This was an obvious reference to Finding Nemo (2003) and was later revealed by Tom Kenny to be just a "joke" plot which he made up to keep the fans busy. (However, Patrick actually does get caught by a fisherman in the episode Hooky.)

*The "Goofy Goober Rock" song is a cover/parody of famous rock staple, "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister off their Stay Hungry album. The song also samples "Just a Gigolo" by David Lee Roth, specifically his scatting towards the final chorus.
*The scene where Goofy Goober Rock, an upbeat version of The Goofy Goober Song, destroys Plankton's mind-control helmets and the scene in Leroy & Stitch, where an upbeat version of Aloha 'Oe shuts down all the Leroys, share a similarity.

*The movie begins shortly before Spongebob wakes up. Seemingly only a few minutes later Spongebob talks to Patrick, before exclaiming it was 8 o'clock, and quickly made his way towards the second Krusty Krab's opening ceremony. Strangely, when Spongebob finds out that he isn't the manager of the new restaurant, he walks off towards the sunset. Unless the ceremony was much later than 8 o'clock (which would be odd, since Spongebob claimed he was late for work), the day passed by very quickly.

*In the movie, King Neptune looks utterly different than he used to be at the series. (The character is also played by a different actor- John O'Hurley played Neptune on the TV series in his one and only appearance.)
* Agoncillo, Teodoro. The Revolt of the Masses: The Story of Bonifacio and the Katipunan
*It is possible that the movie storyline takes place after all of the episodes. At the end, SpongeBob becomes the manager of the Krusty Krab 2, but, even in the new episodes, the Krusty Krab 2 does not exist and SpongeBob is still a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. Also, in the new episodes, Plankton is still trying to steal the formula, but in the movie, he is putting his final plan into play. It has been confirmed by Stephen Hillennburg this was actually the series finale even though it did not air after all the other episodes.
* Constantino, Renato. The Philippines: a Past Revisited
*Of all the characters, Spongebob has the most different drawing. He is a very bright yellow, slightly shorter, and his pupils are smaller. He looks even more different in season four, because he is even shorter than in the movie, he is a very light green, and he even has a higher voice.
