'''AbleNET''' is an [[Internet Relay Chat|IRC]] network. It was founded, May 2001, by [[AfterNET]] Co-Founder and long-time Admin Anthony Sanchez and several others from that network. The network was set up primarily as a chat network for friends, and as a response to growing disillusionment with the policies of some of the [[AfterNET]] administrators. Several users from AbleNET were involved in the creation of [[AfterNET]]; some even tracing their usage back to [[TheNET]] and [[InnerNET]].

'''Caringbah''' is a [[suburb]], in [[Southern Sydney|southern]] [[Sydney]], in the state of [[New South Wales]], [[Australia]]. Caringbah is located 24km south of the [[Sydney central business district]] in the [[Local Government Areas in Australia|local government area]] of [[Sutherland Shire]].

AbleNET is a small network with an average of 150-300 users online at any given time. The [[Undernet]]-compatible [[IRCu]] [[Daemon (computer software)|daemon]] software is used on the servers. [[IRC_Services|Channel services]] are provided using [[srvx]]; the user authentication service is named AuthServ and the channel service is named X.

==Location==

Caringbah stretches from Woolooware Bay on the [[Georges River]] to Yowie Bay and Burraneer Bay on the [[Port Hacking]] estuary. A number of Caringbah localities have been declared as separate suburbs but still share the postcode 2229. These suburbs are ''[[Taren Point, New South Wales|Taren Point]]'' to the north on the Georges River and ''[[Port Hacking, New South Wales|Port Hacking]]'', ''[[Lilli Pilli, New South Wales|Lilli Pilli]]'', ''[[Dolans Bay, New South Wales|Dolans Bay]]'' to the south on the Port Hacking River.

AbleNET is noted for its distinct lack of [[IRCOp]]s, instead using various services to control the flow of network stability and activity. Additionally, the Network is noted for its high standards of access, regarding the limit of multiple connections and unverifiable "bots".

==Transport==

Caringbah is a central suburb of the Sutherland Shire, considering some of the main roads intersect here. President Avenue and the Kingsway both run from [[Sutherland, New South Wales|Sutherland]] via [[Miranda, New South Wales|Miranda]] in the west, to the popular beachside suburb of [[Cronulla, New South Wales|Cronulla]] in the east. [[Taren Point Road]] leads north to the [[Captain Cook Bridge]], [[St George, New South Wales|St George]] area and further north to the Sydney CBD.

[[Caringbah railway station, Sydney|Caringbah railway station]] is on the Cronulla branch of the [[Illawarra line]] on the [[City Rail]] network. [[Caringbah Bus Service]] runs buses to [[Lilli Pilli, New South Wales|Lilli Pilli]] and [[Westfield Miranda]] and [[BusLink]] runs services to [[Cronulla, New South Wales|Cronulla]] and [[Westfield Miranda]]. [[Sydney Buses]] provide bus services to [[Rockdale, New South Wales|Rockdale]] and [[Westfield Miranda]], but there are only limited Sydney Buses services that travel into the commercial area near the railway station.

Caringbah features a mixture of residential, commercial and industrial areas.

== Historical Timeline ==

The commercial district is made up mostly of [[small business]]es specialising in [[professional services]]. The main shopping centre is located close to Caringbah railway station and is centred on the intersections of President Avenue, the Kingsway and Port Hacking Road South.

* May 2001, AbleNET is born and has served as a meeting place for chatters ever since.

* May 2003, with the looming threat of the [http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[e-mail] Fizzer Worm] AbleNET joins with a vast collection of [[IRC]] networks and news communities to form [http://www.irc-unity.org/ IRC-Unity]<ref>http://www.irc-unity.org/</ref>.

A large commercial and industrial area is also centred on Taren Point Road and surrounding areas. Commercial developments here include many home furnishing retailers and home renovation showrooms.

* December 2005, AbleNET becomes the first IRC Network to offer "blogging" to their community.

== Founder ==

Anthony Sanchez has been using and administering IRC Networks since 1995, starting as an IRCop with InnerNET subsequently [[NewNET]] during it's founding year. Later he went on to Admin servers for [[TheNET]], [[AfterNET]] and finally AbleNET.

==Hospitals==

Caringbah is home to [[Sutherland Hospital]], a public district hospital and Kareena Private Hospital.

==Schools==

There are three secondary schools and a number of primary schools in Caringbah. The secondary schools are [[Caringbah Selective High School]], [http://www.endeavour-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/ Endeavour Sports High School] and De La Salle College. De La Salle College is a school for boys from year 7 to year 10. The primary schools include Caringbah Public School, Caringbah North Public School, Laguna Street Public School and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School.

==History==

Caringbah is an Aboriginal word for ''a pademelon wallaby''. The suburb was originally called Highfield, but it is unclear whether this was a position description or whether it was named after an early resident. Caringbah was used from 1911, after the [[Trams in Sydney|steam trams]] began operating between Cronulla and Sutherland.

Thomas Holt (1811-88) owned most of the land that stretched from Sutherland to Cronulla in the 1860s. Most of the area around Miranda and Caringbah was used for [[market gardening]] from the 1880s. Caringbah was still used for orchards and farming until after [[World War II]]. The [[Rail tracks|railway line]] to Cronulla opened in 1939.
