Lieutenant General Burgess has now been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the new Director of the Intelligence Staff, Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
On May 17, 2007, the [[Office of the Director of National Intelligence]] announced that Burgess had been nominiated to be the Director of the Intelligence Staff (DIS) for the Office of the DNI. This newly created position would end the Chief of Staff position, appointing David Shedd as the newly created Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Policy, Plans and Requirements. Burgess was commissioned in Military Intelligence through the [[Auburn University]] [[ROTC]] Program in 1974. He earned a Master of Science degree in Education from the [[University of Southern California]] in 1980, and a Master of Military Arts and Science from the [[U.S. Army Command and General Staff College]] in 1986.
His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, the Military Intelligence Officers Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, the Advanced Military Studies Program, and the Air War College.
Lieutenant General Burgess served as an Armor Platoon Leader and [[S2 (military)|S-2]] of the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor, and the 179th Military Intelligence Detachment Executive Officer in the 197th Infantry Brigade at [[Fort Benning, Georgia]], from 1974 to 1978. He was a Strategic Intelligence Staff Officer and aide-de-camp to the US Commander at [[Berlin]] from 1978 to 1981.
