Keeping Up Appearances tables
Hi Mathew its Edito*Magic (also known as Chris C. Nichols)

I know you were one of the people who agreed with me on the discussion page that one neat table with all the Keeping Up Appearances specials together would look better than several separate tables per episodes, littered all over the page. I’m glad that you can see sense like I can. Hopefully we can make Updown see sense aswell. Please join in the debate further on the Wikipedia talk:Television episodes. Thanks! Given I'm not entirely certain what to do, now, with a personal-attack-fest I've stumbled into with User:IZAK. Would you mind reviewing the discussion at both this VfD and his talk, and give me an idea as to what Wikipedians're supposed to do in such situations? (I've been looking for assistance two days now, and just stumbled across an old RfC relevant to this dispute. Your name was listed in support, if curious as to how I ended up here.)

To which I have no reply except: Umm, what? I thought that protecting was meant to be the uber-last resort, and highly temporary. The edit history seems to indicate that there was one vandalism over a week ago. If I'm totally wrong (as is often the case) tell me. It's a real shame that I've managed to twist your knickers the first time we interact, and I'm sorry that I was brusque. It's a total non-issue, I simply thought it was odd. Ignore this if you want, erase it, heck erase it from my talk page if you want. I have unblocked Ril.

While I can appreciate your frustration, and while you are correct that Ril's relisting of Authentic Matthew was uncalled for, a block is not a suitable response.

The "disruption" provision of Wikipedia:Bans and blocks is intended to stop users who can't be stopped any other way. I don't believe that Ril is in that category. I also believe that there was insufficient warning and discussion before the block.

I will be watching Ril and will remove any VfD listing he makes for Authentic Matthew myself.

:Oh! I thought this was about Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Historical persecution by Muslims, but apperently nyet. You must have been thinking: 'El_C is such an idiot [more so than usual], what the hell isn't he jibberinging on now?' Indeed. :( El_C 15:29, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

What -Ril- did with relisting was foolish, but I, too, wondered about its rising to the level of a block. It seemed more rational just to delist the article. What's foolish is that there really isn't any need for a new VfD. It would be possible to do a merge, with deletions from the article as bits were merged, and an edit making the suspect article simply say, "The term "Authentic Matthew" is used by some to refer to an hypothetical Book of Matthew. See the discussions under Book of Matthew and Jerome for more." No VfD involved, and yet the damage is undone, and I can't imagine the case anyone could make opposing it. Anyway, the article is very bad, and there is no way any of the "keep" voters were in accord with policy, but their inability to follow policy doesn't allow -Ril- to break policy by relisting it, I agree. I just don't get why the block. Geogre 15:43, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

Authentic Matthe (again)
*I recognise that there was no consensus to delete this article – and that is unlikely to change. But I still have grave concerns about it. I did warn –Ril- that his involvement in the second re-listing was likely to be counterproductive but to no avail. I am left wondering how many of the ‘keep’ votes were influenced by –Ril-‘s antics. But getting this article right is more important that –Ril-‘s behaviour.

Looking at the last vote Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Authentic Matthew 21d , 12k, 4m – I note that 4 of the ‘keep votes’ expressed a desire for a renaming. So that would indicate a 29-8 feeling that it was undesirable to have this article at this name. I'm wondering, whether as an impartial observer, you would consider that a fair interpretation of the debate?

Is there room for an acceptable compromise? I’d like to move it to Possible origins of Matthew’s Gospel and place it the context of the real scholarly debate on Matthew. There would some overlap with both the Gospel of Matthew and Synoptic problem – but that I for one could live with. I could just ‘be bold’ and do this, but it is likely to be reverted, and I’m likely to get abuse (from a mountain of socks), – so I’m looking for some agreement that this has a consensus – preferably from some of those who didn’t vote ‘delete’. Any comments? --Doc (?) 18:19, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

The meaning of your screen name eludes me.
Ta bu shi da yu,

The elements of your screen name look like pinyin characters of Mandarin Chinese, but I have only taken one semester in college, at The Florida State University, and I just barely passed the class. I would be grateful if you could tell me the meaning of your screen name, but, to be a team player, and amuse you, I would like to guess first.

I think "Ta bu shi da yu" means something like "It is not fighting language" or possibly, "It is not fish language."

Am I close? What is it? Thank you.--GordonWattsDotCom 15:42, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

::There's some minor ambiguity due to the missing tone marks. From what TBSDY has said it's supposed to be "Tā bú shì dà yú" ("he/she/it is not a big fish"), but if it was "Tā bú shì dǎ yú" it could be taken to mean "he/she/it isn't someone who fishes / likes to fish", though that's not particularly grammatical or meaningful. --MarkSweep 17:32, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

:::Yes, of course, the tone marks: I remember them. There are four: "Rising," "Falling," "Constantly emphasized," and "Falling and then rising again." (That's just my way of describing them, as I remember from my class.) I have misplaced my Chinese-to-American dictionaries, which I saved from my college days, but even without the tome marks, I could probably look at the various possibilities and make a good guess. Of course, if I were a native speaker, and/or had not misplaced my dictionaries, and/or had the missing tone marks, I would no doubt do better. (By the way, it was HARD to find any online dictionaries, but I found a little bit of info.)

:::PS: Ta bu shi da yu, thank you for making a note on my user talk page to check out the FAQ section, but rest assured, I had put your page on my watch list for now so I could see if there were any replies. This link told us it means: "He is not a big fish," and I am sure it could be extended to mean "He/SHE/It is not a big fish." :::::No. Sorry for the ambiguity. I was being literal, not sarcastic. I wasn't, like, poking fun at somebody for chosing a funny name or for providing helpful links. You were the one who reminded me what the marks were called, when I couldn't reembmer the phrase "tone marks." Thanks. I'm just curious: What part of my post looked less than a real or authentic question? Maybe the fact that I payed such attention to a small matter like a screen name? Thanks in advance.--GordonWattsDotCom 01:14, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

::::::Well, then don't think twice about it. It wasn't your original question that I was confused about, only your most recent posting. As I said, my online sarcasm detector is a bit off, and I'm not used to people being very polite around here. --MarkSweep 01:47, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

:::::::No problemo... We're the "underpaid and overworked" masses -not getting paid a thing to post (and argue, lol) here. When you get lots of people in a small space (or page), and they are underpaid, things can get snarly on ocassion, and I do admit it's hard to be polite on how much I'm paid, sometimes. ... User:MinorEdit, one of our contributors, gets blocked if I block those IP addresses. - Ta bu shi da yu 23:41, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

:I see...that is a problem! But these seem like static IPs; doesn't User:MinorEdit get the same IP assigned each time? If so, at least we can eliminate most of the problem that way. The long term solution is to have a developer change the IP blocking code so that IP blocks can, when desired, block only anonymous users from those IPs, without affecting registered users. Combine that with a three-day waiting period for new accounts from these IPs (which has already been proposed for all new accounts!), and we have a real solution.
:P.S.: Don't leave! We need people like you here! OwenX 00:06, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
