Born July 31, 1948, in Trenton, N.J., Coane is a graduate of The Hun School of Princeton and Rutgers University. He was married to Amy Fromer in 1984 and has two children, Max and Cassie. He began his career as a producer at MPO Productions in New York City before becoming a director of TV commercials at his production company, Coane Productions, Inc. He is a member of the [[Director's Guild of America]] and the [[Producers Guild of America]]. He currently resides in Santa Monica, CA.

In 1640 he published the book he is best known for: his anti-[[Machiavelli]]an [[emblem]] book ''Empresas Políticos [Political Maxims], Idea de un príncipe político cristiano'', a hundred short essays on the education of a prince. These sententious works were written primarily for the son of [[Philip IV of Spain|Philip IV]]. It passed through a number of editions and was translated in several languages. An unfinished historical work, entitled ''Corona gatica, castellana, y austriaca politicamente ilustrada'', appeared in 1646. Another work ascribed to Saavedra, the ''República literaria'', was published posthumously in 1670; it is a satirical discussion on some of the leading characters in the ancient and modern world of letters.
