Spoiler
Cormac McLaggen, a Gryffindor student one year above Harry Potter, attempted to join the Gryffindor Quidditch team as keeper. However he had failed to make the trial; Harry Potter had chosen Ron Weasley for this position. This may had been to several reasons. Hermione Granger had jinxed him, because she fancied Ron to stay as keeper. Also McLaggen had accused Ginny Weasley (Ron's sister), for favouring Ron by hitting him Quaffles which were easy to block, and hitting harder ones for McLaggen. And finally, Ron was Harry's friend whom wanted Ron to stay as Quidditch Keeper.
However at one game, Ron was unable to play and McLaggen had his chance to play Keeper. This lead to a complete disaster for Gryffindor. McLaggen had been keen to be critical of team mates. During the game he took the bat from another Gryffindor Beater and attempted to show the 'proper way' of hitting the bludger to a team mate. McLaggen had mishit the bludger, and it came at Harry for which resulted in a fractured skull and Gryffindor's devasting loss of 320-60.
McLaggen was also a member of Horace Slughorn's "Slug Club", where he met and started fancying Hermione Granger. Leery of him, she nevertheless let him escort her to the Slug Club's autumn party, and she found her leeriness of him confirmed, quickly deciding to spend the night hiding from him.
