In origine era stato descritto come una [[sottospecie]] di ''[[Trachypithecus auratus|T. auratus]]''<ref name= Brandon-Jones>Bradon-Jones, D. 1995. ''A revision of the Asian pied leaf monkeys (Mammalia: Cercopithecidae: Superspecies Semnopithecus auratus), with the description of a new subspecies.'' Raffles Bull. Se si eccettua il pelame quasi completamente nero, ricorda gli altri membri del gruppo di ''T. francoisi''. Caso unico del gruppo, sembra essere [[Speciazione#Speciazione parapatrica|parapatrico]] di ''[[Trachypithecus hatinhensis|T. hatinhensis]]''<ref name=Asian/>, tanto che sono noti casi inconfutabili di [[intergradazione]] con questa specie<ref> Duckworth, J. Vientiane: IUCN, WCS and CPAWM.</ref>; inoltre, da un [[genetica|punto di vista genetico]], sono poco distinguibili l'uno dall'altro<ref name=gentic2004>Roos, C. 2004.
