The LASALLE College of the Arts (), formerly LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, is an arts educational institution in Singapore. It was founded in 1984 by De La Salle brother, Brother Joseph McNally. Presently, LASALLE has five faculties which are design, fine arts, integrated arts, media arts and performing arts.
The series is based on "The dozens", an oral tradition in which two individuals trade insults, typically directed at an opponent, his/her mother, or another member of his/her family, until one is unable to offer a comeback.
LASALLE-SIA received its Accredited Institution status granted by The Open University, the UK’s largest university, in March 2004. The institutional accreditation and degree validation by The Open University Validation Services (OUVS) is an independent stamp of approval of academic quality from an internationally-recognised accrediting body operating under a UK Royal Charter. Students completing degree programmes written and developed by LASALLE and validated by OUVS will receive a parchment jointly bearing the name and seal of LASALLE and The Open University, clearly identifying LASALLE-SIA as the provider and The Open University bring validation equivalent to UK MA, BA (Hons) or DipHE (Diploma in Higher Education).
Season 2 will take place in New York City and Dallas and premieres in fall 2006.
LASALLE College of the Arts has now moved to its new home in the heart of Singapore. Located in the Rochor area, bounded by Prinsep Street, Short Street and Albert Street, the new City Campus sits on a one-hectare site, which is part of the area designated as the Arts, Culture, Learning and Entertainment hub of Singapore.
Basic Format
One of the features of this new Campus is the Brother Joseph McNally Museum.
One of Valderrama's associates, Sam or Jason (who only use their first names), go to a hood where five or six contestants take each other on in a free-for-all "dozens" competition. From there, two or three are selected and are then pitted against each other. Each neighbourhood winner picked by Sam or Jason then goes in a final "battle" and with Valderrama, visits the other's house in order to garner "ammunition" (which is embarrassing or unusual things that the contestant owns or does) or as Valderamma says, "ammo" (though with his accent, it sounds like "M.O.") beforehand to use against his or her opponent.
It tells the story of Brother Joseph McNally, the founder of the College and the history of LASALLE. It houses Brother Joseph McNally's preserved studio, tools, benches and unfinished work. It also contains a Live studio for alumni and resident artists, as well as having interactive audio and visual presentations and permanent and occasional exhibitions.
Renaming
The final battle then comprises several rounds: general jokes about the opponent's momma, jokes directed specifically at the opponent's home, living situation or personal style, and a final "knock-out" joke. Valderrama, in consultation with Sam and Jason, selects a winner who receives $1,000 in "cash money" as Valderrama calls it, and moves on to the "Best of the Week" round.
In recognising LASALLE’s aim to be a Singaporean brand name recognised globally in creative arts education, research and practice, it was agreed with Singapore Airlines (SIA) that the word "SIA" would be phased out of the institution’s name and be branded simply as "LASALLE" by end of February 2007.
The Main Theatre at New City Campus will be named The Singapore Airlines Theatre. The Singapore Airlines Theatre symbolises the warm relations between the two institutions that began in 1993 when SIA contributed S$15 million to fund the construction of two buildings at LASALLE’s Goodman Road campus.
"Best Of The Week"
The winners come back for a "Best Of The Week" show, where the format is slightly different. The four do a freestyle round, and Wilmer and his posse pick the best, and then that one calls out another of the daily winners.
Musical Theatre
Those four then compete in a round of "Yo Mama" snaps, but only on one or two subjects (cheap and dumb, poor and fat, etc.) The four losers from that week's daily battles serve as judge and jury. After determining the two finalists for that week, a special guest joins Wilmer for the weekly final battle.
LASALLE’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Musical Theatre Programme began with its first intake of students in July 2004. The course, the first of its kind in Asia, trains students in singing, acting and dancing. In addition to local teachers, the course also invites international guest artists including writers, directors, agents, and casting directors to contribute to the teaching programme. Final-year students also have the opportunity to present their talent to invited international agents, casting directors, producers and theatre companies in Graduation Showcases in Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore.
The three rounds are based on speed (each player gets 30 seconds to rank on each other), dissing the other player's relation or friend who has come along for the final and the knockout joke. In the end, the winner gets another $1000 and also wins a game console, tickets to a sporting event or entertainment event like a a stand up performance of Mike Epps and dinner at either of two restaurants owned by Valderrama—Geisha House and Dolce. The gaming products won by the weekly champion have been a Playstation Portable, Nintendo DS, XBox 360, and Game Boy Micro .
