WMAQ came to life as WGU on April 13, 1922. The station was formed as a joint venture between [[Fair Department Store]] and [[Chicago Daily News]]. Technical problems forced the station quickly off the air. [[Herbert Hoover]] would inaugurate a new antenna and transmitter and give the station the call letters WMAQ.

NBC would purchase the station in 1931 as an affiliate. WMAQ was boosted by original local and network programming. Marian and Jim Jordan started at WMAQ with a local show and later would move on to form [[Fibber McGee and Molly]]. [[Amos and Andy]] was also a popular program.

[[WMAQ-TV]] would move from experiment to television pioneer. As television made waves around the nation, radio stations like WMAQ shifted to recorded music. The 60s saw WMAQ as an adult rock station. A 1975 format change saw WMAQ taking on [[WJJD-AM]] in the country market. The 70s and 80s saw [[Chicago White Sox]] broadcasts at night.

1985 saw a transition to an talk format. After 57 years, NBC would sell WMAQ to [[Group W]] in 1988. Westinghouse switched WMAQ to an all news format. A series of mergers in the 90s would doom the station. Westinghouse would later buy [[CBS]]. [[Viacom]] then purchases CBS in 1999. With the merger, Viacom was over the limit of stations in the Chicago market.
 
August 1st, 2000: The NBC chimes are sounded at 6AM. WMAQ radio goes off the air.
