==Insidie durante lo sviluppo==
Molti problemi sorgono quando il contenuto scritto in XHTML è visualizzato su apparecchi diversi. Alcuni rispetteranno i colori specificati nel [[Fogli di stile a cascata|CSS]] mentre alcuni non lo faranno, altri visualizzeranno le tabelle e altri no, solo per citare alcuni esempi. Sviluppare un'applicazione che si adatti ai device, significa scrivere contenuti diversi per apparecchi diversi, in base alle loro capacità. Questo può portare ad un'enorme complessità dato il numero elevato di apparecchi diversi presenti sul mercato con diverse caratteristiche hardware (dimensione dello schermo, capacità sull'uso dei colori, tasti, memoria e velocità) e [[browser]]. Purtroppo lL'aggiornamento software dei browser per cellulari è in ogni caso molto più difficile di quello dei broswerbrowser per PC, con il risultato che il software installato rimane in uso fino a quando il telefono non viene dismesso.
Alcune iniziative presentano una soluzione a questo problema. La maggior parte fornisce un linguaggio proprietario per scrivere contenuti [[Wireless Application Protocol|WAP]] che verranno visualizzati in maniera diversa (in XHTML-MP, [[Wireless Markup Language|WML]], [[CHTML]], etc) a seconda dell'apparecchio che ne ha fatto richiesta.
Un'altra libera iniziativa è [[WURFL]] che usa una configurazione [[XML]] gerarchica in grado di mappare centinaia di caratteristiche dei vari device, e un layer di astrazione (WALL: Wireless Abstraction Layer) che permette di scrivere tag che sono convertiti automaticamente nel tipo di mark-up supportato dal device.

The [[MIME]] type for XHTML Mobile Profile is "application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml". Conforming [[User agent|user agents]] should also accept "application/xhtml+xml" and "text/html".
==Versions==
Version 1.2 added form and object support. Version 1.1 added full scripting support intended to be used with [[ECMAScript Mobile Profile]]. Version 1.0 extended XHTML 1.1 Basic Profile with certain presentation elements and basic scripting support.

==Development pitfalls==
Many problems arise when content written in XHTML is shown on different devices. Some will honor colors specified in [[CSS]] while some will not, some will render tables properly while others won't, just to mention some examples. Building an adaptative application means delivering different content to different devices, according to their capabilities. This can bring huge complexity, given the number of different devices in the market with different hardware (screen-sizes, coloring capacity, buttons, memory and speed) and [[Web_browser|browsers]]. Software updates on mobile browsers are much more difficult than with desktop browsers, and as a result broken software tends to stay in use until the phone is discarded.
Many software initiatives present their solution to this problem. Most of them provide a proprietary language to write WAP content, which will render different content (XHTML-MP, [[Wireless_Markup_Language|WML]], [[CHTML]], etc) according to the requesting device. One free initiative is [[Wurfl|WURFL]], which uses a hierarchical [[XML]] configuration file mapping hundreds of device capabilities, and a "Wireless Abstraction Layer" called WALL which allows writing tags that are automatically converted into the type of markup supported by the device.
