History
Evergreen Valley High School opened in 2002 on the Small School concept, with an emphasis on technology and the idea that every student would have a personal laptop to take home and do homework on. The school opened initially with only two years: freshmen and sophomores. As the sophomores moved on, more teachers were found and hired to teach the growing student body. This resulted in many new teachers teaching subjects sometimes for the first time. In addition, when the school began offering Advanced Placement classes, relatively few teachers were at first qualified to teach them. After four years, some teachers have grown proficient after they baptized the first two classes in a baptism by fire, because the students needed to study independently much of the time due to lack of class and school organization. Administration tended to be unhelpful in teachers' and students' requests for aid, although in fairness they themselves were also swamped with the task of managing a brand new school. Students were disgruntled, however, when they found how some of the money granted to the school was spent: on thousand dollar palm trees.

The concept of small schools failed after the first year, when reality set in. The laptops were insured such that if they were lost, students had to pay $100 for a new one. Needless to say, $100 for a laptop worth at least $1200 was a good deal, resulting in many "lost" or "stolen" laptops. It existed as a single high school, with four mostly independent schools within it: Science & Technology, Global Economy, Human Performance, and Humanities. S&T was known for being 98% male (in 2002, there were only 12 girls total in the school, amongst around 200 boys), Human Performance was known as the nerdy, overachieving school, Humanities was full of arts majors and had a female majority, and Global Economy was the most normal, with a healthy dose of athletic jocks, drug users, and cliques. In Fall 2002, the campus was still unfinished, so classes took place in portables on two nearby campuses: Silver Creek High School and Mount Pleasant High School. S&T and HU were situated at Silver Creek, while HP and GE were situated in Mt. Pleasant. Classes such as Band and Yearbook, however, took place only on one campus, and required students enrolled in those classes to attend, even if their small school was based at the other campus. Equipment was also scarce since classes took place in portables. For example, the band class lacked percussion and the larger instruments usually owned by school bands, so they improvised on desks, storage bins, and trash cans until the new campus was ready.

Principals existed for all of the schools, and were supervised by a primary principal. However, despite efforts by some administrators, the school was still horribly disorganized and, despite touting an opportunity to break new ground and set new traditions as a reason for attending the brand new school, was remarkably traditionalist and reluctant to help student organizations and the students themselves. The school existed in this oxymoronic state for a year and a half, torn between trying to be new and different while also trying to be like larger, more traditional, different high schools in the district. In the 2003-2004 school year, the small school system was done away with, and the high school adopted a traditional format, which it has kept until the present.

Biotech Academy
A short lived program geared towards relieving the overcrowding at Evergreen Valley High School. It existed from 2004-2006, for two school years in portables on Evergreen Valley College's campus. Students were lured away by promises of a small school environment (similar to EVHS's original blue print) as well as a focus on biotechnology and the opportunity to take more advanced classes, including college classes at Evergreen Valley College. Laptops and smaller classes were also promised, and delivered after half a year. However, the program was eventually scrapped because of insufficient student interest. In addition, although students at Biotech did form a closer community, the opportunities for extra-curriculars and involvement in on campus clubs and athletic opportunities were not on par with students attending Evergreen Valley. Often students did not participate on athletic teams or take part in club meetings due to disparities in class schedules, as well as the transit between the two campuses. As soon as the Biotech Academy was closed, construction began on a new building in EVHS to handle the overcrowding due to extremely large incoming classes.
