The Raconteurs, also known as The Saboteurs in Australia, are a Grammy-nominated rock band, featuring four members previously known for other musical projects.
Cherenkov radiation (also spelled Cerenkov, scientific transliteration: Čerenkov) is electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle passes through an insulator at a speed greater than the speed of light in that medium. The characteristic "blue glow" of nuclear reactors is due to Cherenkov radiation. It is named after Soviet scientist Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov, the 1958 Nobel Prize winner who was the first to rigorously characterize it.

According to the current definition, The Raconteurs qualify as a rock-and-roll supergroup, featuring the songwriting of Jack White of The White Stripes and Brendan Benson, who are both from Detroit, Michigan. In the band's own words, however, they are not a supergroup, asserting that the term implies something pre-planned, whereas they are actually "a new band made up of old friends." and in North America on March 7, 2006. A CD version of "Steady, as She Goes" was released on April 24, 2006, with the B-side "Bane Rendition."
A common analogy is the sonic boom of a supersonic aircraft or bullet. The sound waves generated by the supersonic body do not move fast enough to get out of the way of the body itself. Hence, the waves "stack up" and form a shock front. Similarly, a speed boat generates a large bow shock because it travels faster than waves can move on the surface of the water.

The video for "Steady As She Goes," directed by Jim Jarmusch, premiered on MTV2 on March 10, 2006. It was also available for streaming on the band's website. An alternate video, featuring the band racing each other in a soap box derby, with a rare appearance from Paul Reubens as the bad guy out to sabotage the race, premiered exclusively on Yahoo! Music June 19, 2006.
In the same way, a superluminal charged particle generates a photonic shockwave as it travels through an insulator.

Entertainment Weekly ran an article discussing how the song has the exact same bassline as Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him?".

The closing seconds of the track have been used to close "Saturday Live" on BBC Radio 4, generating a lot of interest as to what the song is.

The Raconteurs' full-length debut, titled Broken Boy Soldiers, was released on May 15, 2006 in the UK on Third Man Recordings/XL Recordings and May 16 in the US on Third Man Recordings/V2 Records. It entered the UK charts at #2 and the US charts at #7. The album was recorded at Brendan Benson's in-home studio located in Detroit.

On November 3, 2006, the Raconteurs performed 'Broken Boy Soldier' and 'Store Bought Bones' on Later with Jools Holland. According to reporters from Planet Sound who attended the show taping, during 'Store Bought Bones' Jack White's guitar broke down and they had to re-play the song. This eventually happened four times, with the band breaking up in laughter by the 4th take. The TV airing used edited pieces from all four performances and cut out any laughter.

In December 2006, Broken Boy Soldiers was awarded the title Album of the Year by Britain's Mojo magazine.

Recently, The Raconteurs have been nominated for two Grammy Awards: One for Best Rock Album (for Broken Boy Soldiers), and another for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (for "Steady as She Goes").
Note that since this ratio is independent of time, one can take arbitrary time periods and achieve similar triangles. The angle remains unchanged, meaning that subsequent waves generated between the initial time t=0 and final time t will form similar triangles with coinciding right endpoints to the one shown.

Future Plans
Characteristics
Intuitively, the overall intensity of Cherenkov radiation is proportional to the velocity of the inciting charged particle and to the number of such particles. Unlike fluorescence or emission spectra that have characteristic spectral peaks, Cherenkov radiation is continuous. The relative intensity of one frequency is proportional to the frequency. That is, higher frequencies (shorter wavelengths) are more intense in Cherenkov radiation. This is why visible Cherenkov radiation is observed to be brilliant blue. In fact, most Cherenkov radiation is in the ultraviolet spectrum - it is only with sufficiently accelerated charges that it even becomes visible; the sensitivity of the human eye peaks at green, and is very low in the violet portion of the spectrum.

The band is currently recording songs for their next album at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. They have twelve songs written, and plan on releasing the album in 2008.
There is a cut-off frequency for which the equation above cannot be satisfied. Since the refractive index is a function of frequency (and hence wavelength), the intensity doesn't continue increasing at ever shorter wavelengths even for ultra-relativistic particles (where v/c approaches 1). At X-Ray frequencies, the refractive index becomes less than unity (note that in media the phase velocity may exceed c without violating relativity) and hence no X-Ray emission (or shorter wavelength emissions such as gamma rays) would be observed. However, X-rays can be generated at special energies corresponding to core electronic transitions in a material, as the index of refraction is often greater than 1 at these energies.

The Raconteurs have also recorded a new song called "Footsteps" with The Hives, probably slated to be on the new album. "5 on the 5," a song the band played live, is likely to be on the album.
As in sonic booms and bow shocks, the angle of the shock cone is inversely related to the velocity of the disruption. Hence, observed angles of incidence can be used to compute the direction and speed of a Cherenkov radiation-producing charge.

Along with those tracks, it's possible one of the many covers the band played live (or an entirely different one) will be on the album.
Uses
Nuclear reactors
Cherenkov radiation is used to detect high-energy charged particles. In pool-type nuclear reactors, the intensity of Cherenkov radiation is related to the frequency of the fission events that produce high-energy electrons, and hence is a measure of the intensity of the reaction. Cherenkov radiation is also used to characterize the remaining radioactivity of spent fuel rods.

Other possibilities would be one of the leaked Brendan Benson demos. One reason for this was that both "Call It A Day" and "Together" were supposed to be on a solo album of his, as well as "Store Bought Bones" which was supposed to be a Get Behind Me Satan song. If a demo of his appeared on the new album, it would be likely to be "Feel Like Taking You Home Now" since critics have pointed out a Raconteurs influence.
Astrophysics experiments
When a high-energy cosmic ray interacts with the Earth's atmosphere, it may produce an electron-positron pair with enormous velocities. The Cherenkov radiation from these charged particles is used to determine the source and intensity of the cosmic ray, which is used for example in the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique (IACT), by experiments such as VERITAS, H.E.S.S., and MAGIC. Similar methods are used in very large neutrino detectors, such as the Super-Kamiokande, the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) and IceCube.

Also, the title "Monkeys Have It Easy" was placed on the White Stripes site in the press release for Icky Thump with "discarded" after it. It's unlikely, but the song could be a new Raconteurs song now.
Cherenkov radiation can also be used to determine properties of high-energy astronomical objects that emit gamma rays, such as supernova remnants and blazars. This is done by projects such as STACEE, a gamma ray detector in New Mexico.

The band recorded for a three week period before they prepared for individual releases with their other bands, though Jack said they might not finish by then.
Particle physics experiments
Cherenkov radiation is commonly used in experimental particle physics for particle identification. One could measure (or put limits on) the velocity of an electrically charged elementary particle by the properties of the Cherenkov light it emits in a certain medium. If the momentum of the particle is measured independently, one could compute the mass of the particle by its momentum and velocity (see Four-momentum), and hence identify the particle.

Discography
The simplest type of particle identification device based on a Cherenkov radiation technique is the threshold counter, which gives an answer as to whether the velocity of a charged particle is lower or higher than a certain value by looking at whether this particle does or does not emit Cherenkov light in a certain medium. Knowing particle momentum, one can separate particles lighter than a certain threshold from those heavier than the threshold.

They have also released live performance albums in limited quantities at their respective concerts.
The most advanced type of a detector is the RICH, or Ring imaging Cherenkov detector, developed in 1980s. In a RICH detector, a cone of Cherenkov light is produced when a high speed charged particle traverses a suitable gaseous or liquid medium, often called radiator. This light cone is detected on a position sensitive planar photon detector, which allows reconstructing a ring or disc, the radius of which is a measure for the Cherenkov emission angle. Both focusing and proximity-focusing detectors are in use. In a focusing RICH detector, the photons are collected by a spherical mirror and focused onto the photon detector placed at the focal plane. The result is a circle with a radius independent of the emission point along the particle track. This scheme is suitable for low refractive index radiators, i.e. gases, due to the larger radiator length needed to create enough photons. In the more compact proximity-focusing design, a thin radiator volume emits a cone of Cherenkov light which traverses a small distance – the proximity gap – and is detected on the photon detector plane. The image is a ring of light, the radius of which is defined by the Cherenkov emission angle and the proximity gap. The ring thickness is determined by the thickness of the radiator. An example of a proximity gap RICH detector is the High Momentum Particle Identification (HMPID), a detector currently under construction for ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), one of the six experiments at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN.

SeeLive alsoperformances
The Raconteurs first performed live at the Academy in Liverpool, U.K., on March 20, 2006, launching a short British tour. Their first American date was the next month, on April 20 at New York's Irving Plaza. Nearly nonstop touring followed, bringing the band to audiences around North America and Europe. The high profile of Jack White meant that even though the band was new, they were able to sell out mid-size venues — a rarity for a band's first tour.

*List of light sources
The band has played a number of music festivals in Europe, Asia, and North America (including Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL and Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas), headlining many.

In November 2006, the Raconteurs played eight dates as the opening act for Bob Dylan on the northeastern leg of his U.S. tour.

The band has performed a number of covers during live shows. For instance, the set list usually includes renditions of "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" (a song written by Sonny Bono and popularized by both Cher and Nancy Sinatra) and "Headin' For the Texas Border" by The Flamin Groovies. Other songs the band has covered include Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy", Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?", The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks," David Bowie's "It Ain´t Easy", and Love's "A House Is Not A Motel".

The Saboteurs
The Raconteurs were forced to rename themselves as "The Saboteurs" for the Australian market when it was discovered that a Queensland band was already using the name "Raconteurs". The Queensland band refused to give up their name for the amount they were offered, and instead tried to extract a higher price from the Raconteurs' record company.
