Il [[Manchester City Football Club|Manchester City]] è tornato a giocare la competizione a 38 anni di distanza dall'ultima volta, datata [[FA Charity Shield 1973|1973]], mentre per il [[Manchester United Football Club|Manchester United]] si è trattata della quinta apparizione consecutiva.

Il trofeo venne vinto dai ''Red Devils'' che sconfissero per 3-2 i ''Citizens'' dopo che erano andati al riposo sotto di due reti.
