expos/nationals debate
There is a major debate going on, and I wondered if you might want to chime in. The debate involves how to deal with franchise moves in baseball. The question is whether Montréal Expos should be its own article or if it should redirect to Washington Nationals. All other instances of franchise moves in MLB redirect the old team name to the new team name, and the history of the franchise is covered within the new team name (for MLB, NBA and NFL examples, see here. Some people are confused and think the Expos and the Nats are different teams. Some people don't want to upset Canadian readers.
Indeed, the Washington Nationals are not a new team - the Montreal Expos franchise has moved to Washington, and the old franchise name should redirect to the new franchise name, just like the 20+ instances of this occuring in Wikipedia. For example, Brooklyn Dodger history resides in the Los Angeles Dodgers article. New York Giants history, including the Shot Heard 'Round the World, resides in the San Francisco Giants article.
If you have the time, maybe you could chime in on the conversation there, Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Montréal Expos. Kingturtle 21:05, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Braves records
Just wondering what your source is. One of the linked websites? Or a book?
I bring this up in part because it might be useful and/or interesting to list each category separately by city, the way it's done in The Sporting News Baseball Record Book. That way it is easy to see who the overall record-holder is for the franchise, and it would also serve those users who want to know the records for just the Boston Braves, for example.
Wahkeenah 17:28, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
Hello Wahkeenah!
I am glad that you noticed my edits. I actually do not have "one source" for those records. I went through a book called The Sports Encylopedia: Baseball in the late 1980's and compiled a list of records by franchise. I included all cities for each franchise since it was basically the same team. I then updated any records that were broken at the end of each season via the newspapers, Yahoo!Sports, etc. So I really do not have one source and even though I would love to, I do not have the time to research the records by city.
I do have an updated version of that Baseball Encylopedia, but what it involves to find team records is going through 100+ years of stats for each season and recording the records in each category. It is not an easy research guide for that as it lists each season and you have to find the teams within that season.
I hope this clears up how I got those records.
Thanks and sorry that I cannot research it further at this point.
````
I suppose I could copy the data from The Sporting News Baseball Guide, as opposed to the painstaking year-by-year search, but that seems like overkill, and also very possibly a copyright violation, even with proper attribution.
Wrestling profiles
Just a quick thing about the wrestling profiles - we've been discussing this at the Pro wrestling WikiProject, and we think that profiles are better placed after a career section rather than before, as it disrupts the article flow. We also have a new infobox profile for larger articles. Thank you for adding them, though. See here for discussion. --Chrysaor 19:17, May 9, 2005 (UTC)
Image copyrights
You've uploaded a number of images, with the edit summary "There were no messages or copyrights telling me I could not use this file.". However, this doesn't mean that they aren't covered under copyright. See Wikipedia:Copyrights for image, but generally, images have to be in the public ___domain explicitly, or else released explicitly under a free licence like the GFDL, for us to use them. You can, however, tag these images as fair use; just add Template:Fairuse to each image page. Thanks, Meelar (talk) 18:47, May 13, 2005 (UTC)
cryptozooology vs the occult
Heya, I'm not sure the cryptozooology entries like Bigfoot and Loch Ness Monster should be categorised as Occult, the two are reasonably separate. Nessie and Bigfoot need not be supernatural, merely elusive. --W(t) 18:23, 2005 May 26 (UTC)
:Hello, I just put those in that category because books about the subjects are categorized under "occult" in many bookstores. If I am wrong, please feel free to correct them and/or let me know. I also put Almas, Mothman, Jersey Devil and UFO's under there for the same reason.
:Thanks for the input! Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future!
:--Phatcat68 14:27, 26 May 2005 (US ET)
::I think we have the luxury of a slightly higher resolution categorisation though. I've de-catted Almas, Mothman and UFO's; I agree the Jersey Devil qualifies due to the whole demon connection. Happy editing! --W(t) 18:33, 2005 May 26 (UTC)
Wrestling
I just wanted to say thanks for your work on the old wrestling articles. You're doing a great job.
Murder victims category
I see you just went through and added a Murder victims category to the articles of the Jack the Ripper victims. These are all already in the Jack the Ripper victims category. Is there some reason why you just didn;t put that whole category as a subcategory of Murder victims? It would have saved yourself a lot of time changing them one by one and would have helped categorize things much better while avoiding duplicate themed category listings.
And now I just checked... JtR victims is a subset of British murder victims, which is already a subset of the Murder victims category, which means all your additions to these articles just duplicated existing categorization.DreamGuy 17:35, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)
Also, you seem to have gone through and added a whole bunch of people already tagged in the serial killer category to the murderer category, when serial killer is a subset of murderer... You really need to go back through and undo all these changes you made. DreamGuy 17:48, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)
Hello, I was trying to reply to you a little while ago, but it said I had an edit conflict, probably your second message to me at the same time. Anyway, I was thanking you for letting me know these things & I will fix them shortly.
LGBT designations
I removed your Category designations "Gay, lesbian or bisexual people" and "LGBT actors" from Greta Garbo. While there has been much speculation about her sexuality, I don't think Wikipedia is a place where we should gave a label of any sort on any issue based on nothing more than speculation. An encyclopedia article cannot make a statement of fact without the necessary proof to back it up. It seems we are at times prone to write things about the dead that we never would if they were alive because of thje threat of a lawsuit. (I'm thinking of Tom Cruise in particular]].) I have done a lot of writing/reseach on the early film industry and have never found a shred of proof that Garbo was a lesbian or bisexual. I did find a lot of jealous "macho" men she had spurned whose egos were so large that they called her a lesbian. Of course you may have come across factual information that I have not so if that's the case, please insert it in the article and reinstate the categories I deleted. Thanks.
