The Harbor Tunnel Thruway, signed as Interstate 895, is a 17-mile long expressway that serves as a bypass of Baltimore, Maryland. It crosses under Baltimore Harbor via the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, and a $2 toll is charged for using the tunnel. There are no exits available before paying the toll (hence the "No Exit Before Toll" warning attached to entrance signs), although two exits are available for southbound traffic. One exit allows motorists to access US 40 into downtown, while the other provides access to Bayview Hospital and other businesses in southeastern Baltimore. There's also a spur to the south for motorists who wish to go to Annapolis via Interstate 97. Its original termini were at US 40 to the northeast and US 1 to the southwest. When Interstate 95 was opened southwest of Baltimore and along the city's eastern boundary, the Thruway was extended accordingly. It wasn't until 1985 that the Thruway received an Interstate designation. In that year, the Fort McHenry Tunnel opened as the newest crossing under Baltimore Harbor. In addition, the Fort McHenry Tunnel was the final link of I-95 in Maryland. By comparison, the Harbor Tunnel, opened in 1957, is the oldest of the three Harbor crossings (the Key Bridge, opened in 1977, is the third, and it carries the Interstate 695 Beltway across the harbor). Today, the Harbor Tunnel Thruway is designated as Interstate 895.

Interstate 895/Harbor Tunnel Thruway Exit Numbers and Interchanges
NOTE: Exits 1 through 8 are southbound exits only, with northbound entrances, and Exits 9, 11 and 13 are northbound exits only, with southbound entrances. Exit 10 has only a northbound exit (no entrance is available southbound). Exit 14 has both exit and entrance ramps on the southbound side, as well as northbound entrance ramps for traffic accessing the eventual I-95 merge, and Exit 12 is the only interchange with exit ramps from both the northbound and southbound lanes (and of course, southbound traffic can also enter the Thruway from this interchange).
