A game show is a radio or television program involving members of the public or celebrities, sometimes as part of a team, playing a game, perhaps involving answering quiz questions, for points or prizes. In some shows contestants compete against other players or another team whilst other shows involve contestants striving alone for a good outcome or high score. Early television game shows descended from similar programs on broadcast radio.
Joseph Vijay, popularly called Vijay, is a Tamil actor. He is known as "Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay" among his fans. Ilaya Thalapathy means "Young Turk" or "Young General" (future king). He is one of the established actors in the Tamil film industry and has a large fan following after Ajith.

TypesIntroduction
Vijay started off in 1992 under his father's direction in the flop film Naalaya Theerpu. As his father was a director, his entry into the industry wasnt tough at all, but sustaining himself and becoming a star was a challenge for him. He was in various flop and average ran movies before establishing himself as a star, with Poove Unakkaga. In Once More, he had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to act with Thespian Shivaji Ganesan, which Vijay considers himself lucky for. Unfortunately, the film did poorly at the box office. In Naerukku Naer, he acted under Vasanth's direction along with Surya, Simran, Kausalya, and others. Despite such a high profile production house, this film too did poorly. By now, Vijay was stuck with the low-budget star image.
There are several basic genres of game shows with a great deal of crossover between the different types.
*The simplest form of game show is a quiz show whereby people compete against each other by answering quiz questions. Quiz shows usually involves members of the public, but sometimes special shows are aired in which celebrities take part and the prizes are given to charity. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are examples. Some quiz shows, such as the word games Password and Pyramid, pair celebrities and non notable citizens.
*A panel game usually involves a celebrity panel answering questions about a specialist field such as sport or music and is often played for laughs as much as points.
*The third kind of game show involves contestants completing stunts or playing a game that involves an element of chance or strategy in addition to, or instead of, a test of general knowledge.
*Reality game shows have become popular in recent years. In a reality show the competition usually lasts several days or even weeks and a competitor's progress through the game is based on some form of popularity contest, usually a kind of disapproval voting by their fellow competitors or members of the public. Game shows often reward players with prizes such as cash, or holidays and goods and services provided by the show's sponsors.
*Dating game shows, the original reality games, in which the prize is typically a well-funded dating opportunity that one can only pursue with the individual one has 'won' on the show. They are also a type of date auction where competitors compete for dates not with money but with seductive powers or attractiveness or the promise of an enjoyable date or even ultimately marriage.

HistoryBecoming a star
Poove Unakkaga with Vikraman was a surprise hit and established Vijay as a bankable star, often considered second only to Ajith. Producers took notice of this man who was fast becoming a star to reckon with. Poove Unakkaga was a story about the feud between two religions - Hindu and Christians who were good friends first but became enemies due to the love between their children, and did well. Vijay had Sangeetha and Anju Arvind for company.
In the US, television game shows fell out of favor in the 1950s after it was revealed that favored contestants on The $64,000 Question and other shows had been given answers and coached by the producers.
They came back into favor in the 1960s by adopting merchandise prizes of far less value and by emphasizing larger numbers of simple questions, or physical contests without an advantage.

Thullatha Manamum Thullum was another movie where he paired with Simran, and caused the pairing of Vijay-Simran to became a regular event. This movie also had Dhamu, Balaji, Vaiyapuri, and other well-known actors. Then came movies like Ninaithen Vandhai, where he acted with Rambha and Deiyavani, and were flops. Again he had a downslide when his movies like Nenjinile and Minsara Kanna bit the dust.
In the middle of the 1960s, Chuck Barris conceived a new genre in which the competitor's personal life became part of the show. They were the forerunners of today's reality game show.
The prize was typically romantic opportunity (The Dating Game - the first dating game show) or fame (The Gong Show) rather than cash. One of his famous shows, The Newlywed Game, actually led to some divorces.

But just then, SJ Suryah came up with another turning point for Vijay with the hit Kushi, which changed the career graph of Vijay. This movie played continually for over 100 days in some theatres. Vijay was paired up in this movie with Jyothika, who also became a star with Kushi, and their pairing was one of the highlights of this highly successful movie. The songs of this movie were a hit, and the song "Katipudida" with Vijay and sex bomb Mumtaj was considered to "hog the limelight for all the wrong reasons", with the song being too vulgar for the screen. The song had lot of cuts and was made passive later, but Mumtaz was made to be a star with this song from Kushi. This film was marketed as a soft porn A-film in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.
The height of the game show era began in the early 1970s, thanks in part to the success of popular game shows like The Price Is Right, Match Game, The Joker's Wild and The $10,000 Pyramid. Many of these game shows provided amazing game show sets filled with flashing chase lights and sometimes flashing neon lights. This era of game shows officially ended in the 1990s, with The Price Is Right being the only daytime network game show remaining on U.S. television.

Priyamanavale had Vijay again pairing with Simran. This movie had a then vulgar peculiar subject of an agreement marriage where the hero gets into wedlock, on the agreement of being with his wife for one year, and then having the option of divorcing her if he didn't find the marriage to be interesting. Simran and Vijay had another successful pairing in this movie and were regarded as having terrific chemistry between them. The comedy between Vijay and Vivek was at its comic best in this movie.
Another major element in a game show is score displays. The most famous of these displays is the "eggcrate", which consists of seven rows of five bulbs each per digit. The eggcrate display has been used on more game shows than any other score display in history, and is still used today on The Price Is Right. However, in recent years, video displays have replaced the eggcrate, especially from Sony shows. [i]Wheel of Fortune[/i] adopted the look in 2001, followed the next by [i]Jeopardy![/i]. CBS also adopted video screens in 2001 for [i]Hollywood Squares[/i], a show produced by their King World division. Of the major quiz producers, RTL has been the major holdout from this change, as their two US game shows use eggcrate displays.

Badhri had Vijay playing a carefree youth who later becomes a kick boxer, due to his brother's failure at kick boxing. Vijay had taken a lot of risks in the stunts of the film, such as where he has a car run over his fingers, the stunt master break marble over his stomach, and other dangerous activities. He was paired with Bhoomika and Monal (sister of Simran who committed suicide a few years back after an affair with Vijay's cousin brother Vikranth). However, the movie was a flop. In Friends, he had acted with current popular hero Surya. However, this was followed by several consecutive flops like Shajahan, Thamizhan, Youth, Bagavathy, Vaseegara and Pudhiya Geethai, that brought heavy loss to the producers. Thamizhan alone is said to have driven noted producer G. Venkateswaran into suicide with debts amounting to Rs7 crores.
This genre virtually disappeared from US screens in the 1990s. Blind Date, the British version of The Dating Game, remained popular in the UK.

Then came his next turning point - THIRUMALAI. Thirumalai breathed a fresh lease of life into Vijay's career. Produced by Kavithalaya productions, who had just produced the Vikram blockbuster Saamy, Thirumalai was a average movie which again established Vijay as an also-ran star. Thirumalai was directed by Ramana, a newcomer director and Vijay was once again paired with his successful 'Kushi' heroine Jyothika. The songs from this film are said to have made the audience stand up and dance. This was follwed by the biggest flop of his career - Udaya, which did not run even for two weeks.
In Japan a number of shows emerged that defy classification by most standards.
For instance, in one infamous show, failing to answer a question correctly led to one's own mother being buried in tons of rotting fish. In another, those who failed to answer questions correctly were dumped at locations remote from transport or assistance, e.g. in the Arctic, and had to perform such feats as drinking beer while sitting on blocks of ice - first one to run to the outhouse was left behind.
<!-- -->

Then came another average film, GHILLI! Directed by Dharani, who has given blockbusters like Dhill and Dhool, Ghilli was a masala tale of a kabaddi player who rescues a sexy girl from the trap of a Don in Madurai, who is hell bent on marrying her. Trisha was paired with Vijay for the first time. After this film, he started a new affair with Trisha, but she was not interested in him. As retribution, he caught her bathing naked on video and published it on the Internet. She filed a criminal case against him, which is awaiting judgement next year.
The reality game shows concept really took off in the 2000s with shows like Survivor, Big Brother and their clones.
Planet 24 television (owned by Bob Geldof) devised the concept of Survivor but were unable to sell it to a British or American broadcaster.
It was eventually taken up in 1997 by Sweden as Expedition Robinson. The format was an immediate hit in other Scandinavian countries and it soon caught on around the world. These shows combine elements of reality show and older reality game shows with traditional game-show elements of physical competitions by contestants.

Vijay then had a series of flops, like Madurey and Sachin. In Madurey, he played a vegetable vendor and a collector, and was paired with a timid actress Sonia Agarwal and sex bomb Rakshita in. His latest movie is Sachin, whose cast includes Boys fame Harini (Genelia de Souza) and dark skinned sex bomb Bipasha Basu, but it again did poorly.
Some shows (e.g. The Weakest Link, Greed) exploit a disapproval voting system similar to the reality game show, and play up the realistic confrontation between contestants, but are in fact just conventional game shows, where no bodily torture or emotionally stressful situation is created, other than the failure to answer some question or impress hosts. Dog Eat Dog was even publicised as a reality show despite being basically a revamp of The Krypton Factor with a variant of disapproval voting added.

Vijay is now acting in Sivakasi, directed by his Thirupachi director Perarasu. Sivakasi is produced by AM Rathnam and stars Asin with Vijay for the first time. Sex bomb Nayanthara makes a cameo appearence in a song. Sivakasi is a make or break film for him. It has been given A-certificate which should please front benchers.
Card games, especially poker and to a lesser extent blackjack, have recently become the basis for a number of popular shows on various U.S. broadcast and cable/satellite networks. Although these shows appear to meet the third definition above ("a game that involves an element of chance or strategy in addition to, or instead of, a test of general knowledge") an interesting controversy has erupted over whether these "casino games" should be considered game shows.

Vijay's forthcoming films are Aadi, produced by himself and directed by Ramana, and Puli, produced by Appachan and directed by SJ Suryah. He is also rumored to be doing a film with Selvaraghavan and a movie titled Veerasahasam with Saran next year.
