Modern history
Hi, I'm 36 years old and I live near Minneapolis, Minnesota. I do computer programming, mostly in Java, for a living. I have a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics, 1991, from the U of MN.
*1744 - Philidor plays two opponents blindfolded in Paris.

*1763 - William Jones invents Caissa, the chess muse.
Wide-angle map to my home
*1769 - Baron Wolfgang von Kempelen builds the Mechanical Turk.

*1783 - Philidor plays as much as three games simultaneously without seeing the board.

*1802 - First American chess book, Chess Made Easy, by J. Humphreys.
Comments
*1813 - The Liverpool Mercury prints the world earliest chess column.

*1824 - First English correspondence match, London-Edinburgh.
I had found Wikipedia pages before for references, found by Google, but didn't realize the potential for editting them by anyone! It seems radical, but with the possibility of saving all historical copies and allowing people watch pages they've worked on, gives the pages integity. I'm still worried about quality, but I very much like the concept.
*1830 - First recorded instance of a modern female chess player (an American from Philadelphia).

*1834 - First international challenge match: McDonnell (England) v de la Bourdonnais (France) at the Westminster Chess Club, London.
Math, science, astronomy, history, and election methods have been my strongest interests, and I'm sure they will dominate any pages I add or edit.
*1840 - Postal stamps with chess motifs begin to appear.

*1845 - Telegraph is used to transmit moves in a match between London and Portsmouth.
Good technical writing is a difficult art. I tend to write-up things for my own reference as I learn, but having a public place will encourage me to work on user-friendly writing that others may value as well.
*1846 - Deutsche Schachzeitung is the first German chess magazine.

*1848 - Earliest known instance of a game played between blind players.
Adding pictures/diagrams is actually very important to me. Pictures can't improve bad writing, but they can help demonstrate simple details quickly, and help motive people to look into a subject.
*1849 - Staunton set created by Nathaniel Cook.

*1852 - Sandglasses are first used to time a game.
I've got a nice digital camera. I also can design simple diagrams in MSPaint. I also wrote a slick astronomy program written in Borland Delphi (Windows Pascal) which reproduces astronomy views from any place and time in the solar system.
*1857 - First American Chess Congress, won by Morphy.

*1857 - The UK Chess Association is formed.
I've added a number of pages already, and some pictures/diagrams to help some. Sometimes I think it may be good to get something fair in here, and improvements can be added later by myself and others.
*1861 - Games can now be played via transoceanic cables (Dublin-Liverpool).

*1867 - Mechanical clocks are introduced in tournament play.
There are already so many good pages on subjects of interest to me! I'm very impressed!
*1870 - First tournament in Germany (Baden-Baden).

*1871 - Durand publishes the first book on endgames.
This looks like a big time-waster actually, but I can't think of a more fun place to be online when I have some spare time!
*1873 - The Sonneborn-Berger system is first used in a tournament.

*1877 - Formation of the Deutsche Schachbund.
I'll get some links here to pages I've worked on sometime soon....
*1883 - Invention of the Forsyth notation.

*1886 - First official match for the champion title between Steinitz and Zukertort.
