In the Garden of Iden is a 1997 novel by Kage Baker. Although it is set entirely in the 16th century, in Spain and England, it is a science fiction story revolving around the activities of a group of immortal cyborgs, individuals who appear human but have been transformed by high technology.

Mendoza is a cyborg, who, like others of her kind, has been rescued from certain death as a small child and turned into an immortal machine, then made to work for The Company. She loves her work (but is that just her programming ?) and hates 'mortals'. All that changes when, on her first mission, she encounters love and learns the terrible price she has paid to live forever.

This novel is the first in a series about The Company and its servants, human and otherwise. The series continues with Sky Coyote, Mendoza in Hollywood, The Graveyard Game, and The Life of the World to Come. The collection Black Projects, White Knights consists of Company stories, and there are allusions in the collection Mother Aegypt, and other stories.
Anti-Barney humor is a form of humor that targets the children's television program Barney & Friends. The show's (possible) disingenuine feeling has made the program a target for parody by older children and adolescents all over America and elsewhere, as well as many adults, and a few famous entertainment personalities.

Synopsis
History of Anti-Barney humor
SectORspoiler
Children were among the first group to practice anti-Barney humor. Eventually, adults contributed to anti-Barney humor including some parents and a few famous entertainment personalities.

The story is told by Mendoza, a cyborg botanist. In the introduction, she tells how in the 24th cent. there is an organization called Dr. Zeus Inc., or simply The Company. The Company has the secrets of immortality and time travel. Unfortunately immortality is only possible by converting young children to cyborgs, and time travel is difficult, expensive, and only possible when going into the past and returning to your own time. History cannot be changed.
Almost immediately after the show first aired in 1992, while it mesmerized and fascinated younger children and infants, it was despised by older children. It became a taboo show for older people and boys to watch. While the adults remained quiet (for the time being), the kids went right down to work with vicious parody.
Kids wrote songs about Barney being killed which are still even now, 14 years later, elementary school mainstream. Some of the more popular songs that have spread all over the country include "I Hate You" and "Barney Got Shot By G-I Joe". Many others were written as well that either did not make it past their originating elementary school or have faded.
With children writing these songs and many disappointed parents having to see them at the principal's office, people thought this was only a passing fad, but little did they know that they would help build an extensive catalogue of anti-Barney humor.

Dr. Zeus uses the technology simply to get rich. By travelling far into prehistory, the company creates its own immortal cyborg agents, who then have the mission of preserving cultural artifacts and other valuable items for sale in the 24th cent. Usually these items are hidden in safe places, but in the case of extinct species, for instance, they are kept in secret Company caches run by the cyborgs. In the 24th century the Company then 'finds' the long-lost objects and sells them.
Examples of Anti-Barney humor
One of the first well known anti-Barney songs was "Barney's On Fire" by Tony Mason. Another well-known song was released on "Weird Al" Yankovic's Alapolooza record. "Jurassic Park". The song featured the lyric "I'm afraid these things might harm me/cause' they sure don't act like Barney". The music video featured a scene in which a dinosaur bit Barney's head off and spat it out.

The cyborgs are supposed to arrive in the 24th cent. the old fashioned way, by living through the intervening millennia. On the way, they can create new cyborgs from those who would otherwise die as children.
Since 1995, when the website newgrounds.com was established, several fan-made cartoons demeaning Barney have appeared, some of them depicting Barney as a drug addict or a terrorist. One of the most popular includes "Barney Busdriver", which depicts Barney as a drug addict/alcoholic/sadist who is driving an elementary school bus. Another animation portrays Barney as a friend of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein and depicts him sexually assaulting a young girl.

Mendoza tells how she is snatched as a child from the Inquisition in Spain, having first been sold by her real parents to some 'noble Christians' who want her for pagan rites, but are instead arrested. One of the Inquisitors is a cyborg, who is able to deliver her to his fellow agents for 'augmentation'.
An online video combines clips from Barney and Friends with Tupac Shakur's song "Hit 'Em Up," making it appear that Barney and other characters from the show are rapping. Perhaps what actually makes this humorous is that the actual song contains heavy levels of profanity and swear words and violent content, which is quite the opposite of lessons and content regular on Barney.

Fifteen years later she returns to Spain for her first mission. Although she trained as a botanist and wants to go the New World, she has to spend time in Europe on an expedition to England. She finds that the expedition leader is Joseph, the cyborg who saved her. He is about 30,000 years old, having been recruited from the Basque region as a child when his village was massacred. Joseph is a Facilitator, a 'fixer', a top agent. He is also world-weary, cynical and irreverent. His passion is his work, like all the cyborgs, but he also has a deep-seated hatred of religious fanaticism, partly because his parents were killed by a cult, partly because of what he has seen in his long life. The group also includes Nefer, whose specialty is farm animals, and Flavius, a technician.
Many cartoons targeted at older children have made fun of Barney directly or not. Most cartoons do not mention Barney directly. Instead they use a parody and depict it as being mean. Some examples of shows that have done this include Dinosaurs, Rugrats, and Animaniacs.

The mission is to travel to England as part of the entourage of Prince Philip of Spain, who is going to marry Queen Mary. Then they will go to the estate of Sir William Iden, who has been persuaded to let them sample rare plants from his garden. Mendoza is not pleased by all this. She is already deathly afraid of all 'mortals' as she calls them, and is further dismayed by the prospect of going to cold, wet, violent, disease-ridden England.
The science humour magazine Annals of Improbable Research published in its January/February 1995 issue an article called The Taxonomy of Barney, including X-rays of his skeleton. It is freely available on the magazine's website.

When they arrive, without Flavius who stays in London, two things quickly change her mind. One is a hedge of Ilex Tormentosum, or Julius Caesar's Holly, a plant with tremendous medicinal properties. It is already rare and, in the future, it is extinct. The other is Nicholas Harpole, Sir Walter's secretary. Nicholas is "tall even for an Englishman" and has a horse-like face but is very intelligent and well-educated. She is immediately attracted to him, and Joseph, always on the lookout for an advantage, encourages her to seduce Nicholas. This she does, and settles in for a long stay, having decided that the Garden is full of unusual plants she needs to spend years cataloging.
Anti-Barney humor emerged from the modability of early 90's computer games, namely the popular first person shooter, DOOM. Numerous "mods" circulated the Internet and third party mod collections would replace specific monsters. One such mod would replace the Baron of Hell with Barney. Other similar mods were released, replacing one or more monsters with Barney, often with new sounds as well.

Nicholas, it turns out, has a dark past, having been a member of an ecstatic Christian cult that practised sexual freedom. Deciding that the cult leader was simply exploiting his fellows, he broke away and began preaching radical ideas, for which he was arrested and put in chains. Although Nicholas is illegitimate, he had well-connected friends and was freed with the warning to sin no more.
There also was a computer game for Mac called Barney Carnage.

Mendoza also has problems. As she matures, she finds she emits "Crome radiation", a psychic field which can have unpredictable effects on time and space. This is not supposed to be possible for cyborgs, who are screened for such abilities when recruited. In fact, in a later Company story, we learn that Joseph caused the tests to be fudged because the alternative was for Mendoza to be tortured to death by the Inquisition.
Focus on the Family's radio drama, Adventures in Odyssey, also made fun of Barney in one episode. While they did not portray him as violent or profane, they simply made his show seem incredibly dumb. The radio drama parody had Blarney the Rinosaur singing, "I Hug You," but in an uncaring and monotone voice.

As the novel progresses, she is increasingly torn by love for Nicholas and the need to lie to him, to play her assigned part. Nicholas himself is suspicious of Mendoza and her companions. Old Sir Walter Iden, having been given rejuvenating treatments by Joseph as payment for their stay, decides to sell the estate and move to London. The entire household is already amazed by his transformation from doddering old man to virile middle-age. Joseph is furious but can do nothing. Then, while the household is being inventoried for the sale, Joseph is damaged in an accident which would have killed a normal human. Though he talks his way out of the immediate situation with his usual skill, he is eventually found out by Nicholas, who sees him doing self-repairs to his internal machinery.
Z100 Prank Call
The New York City based Top 40 station WHTZ, better known as Z100, received a prank call during a morning radio show from a person who claimed to be Barney. When one of the DJs asked Barney what he does on the weekends when he's not filming the show, he admitted that he had "a severe crack problem" and that he "just can't stop smoking this stuff".

Nicholas, having been prepared to elope with Mendoza, confronts her, believing her to be a devil in human form. She admits that, even in her own eyes, she is no longer human. Nicholas flees the estate.
The people who made the crank call are believed to be high schools students from northern New Jersey, this is still uncertain though.

Later she learns he has returned to preaching in Rochester, Kent, and has been condemned to burn by the new Catholic authorities. She runs away herself to Rochester, but is unable to convince him to recant. At this point Joseph appears, having followed Mendoza. His only purpose now is to prevent her becoming a Company renegade. He denounces Nicholas as just another fake messiah who can only lead others to destruction along with himself. He reveals to Nicholas that he has lived many thousands of years and has yet to see anything resembling the Truth that Nicholas and his like preach. Telling Nicholas that "of all the burnings I've witnessed, this is one I will actually enjoy" he takes Mendoza away.
The call received semi-national re-recognition as a user at newgrounds.com used the audio from the station and created an accompanying Flash Animation, he even depicted the baby stealing Barney's crack at the end.

The next morning, they witness Nicholas' death. Returning to the Iden estate, Joseph promises to pull strings and get Mendoza sent to the New World, as she originally wanted.

In the final chapter, Mendoza arrives at New World One in the South American jungle. It is a secret Company base run like a luxury hotel, where the servants are Mayans rescued from sacrifices. She settles into her new air-conditioned existence, with an unknowable future.
A small comic book imprint, Parody Press (an imprint of Eternity Comics), released an anthology comic book entitled Kill Barny in 1994, a collection of short stories and one-page strips depicting the death of the purple dinosaur. One multi-page story depicts "Beaver and Butt-Chin", characters drawn to resemble Beavis and Butt-Head, playing "Dinosaur Baseball" and setting the purple dinosaur on fire.

Themes
Several months later, another issue was released under the name Kill Barny Again!, reprinting most of Kill Barny but with some new material pages and a new cover.
This novel is primarily concerned with language, culture and personality. The darker side of The Company is only hinted at here, with Mendoza resigned to working for an entity that knows everything she is ever going to do, so anything that happens to her is more likely to be planned than accidental.

Instead we are treated to a feast of Elizabethan language and culture, from an author who knows her stuff. Technological anachronisms, such as the cyborgs' abilities to absorb knowledge almost instantly, sense things humans cannot, perform feats of strength, and run away at high speed from danger, serve only as background to the main action, or else are the source of problems. Their most important assets are Joseph's silken tongue and quick wits. "Preservers" like Mendoza do not interact well with humans, being too focussed on their work. They also do not conceal their differences as well as they should. One of Joseph's jobs is to cover for them.
Nine Months
The movie Nine Months (with Hugh Grant) had a Barney rip-off character called "Arnie". The "Arnie" character was clearly meant to represent the growing amount of Anti-Barney humor.

Unfortunately (or was it planned ?) Joseph's guidance and actions lead to Nicholas' downfall, and thus to Mendoza's crash. Having progressed from naive child to boisterous cadet cyborg to dangerously besotted agent, she is twisted inside, though outwardly numb. She begins her path to isolation from even her own kind. Her nascent psychic abilities are an unknown and highly random factor.
"Arnie" was making a personal appearance in the store. The Arnie character taunts Tom Arnold's character of Marty by trying to get him to buy various "Arnie" merchandise. Marty graciously says 'no thank you', but Arnie proceeds to chide Marty for not buying the merchandise. After being chided several times, Marty attacks "Arnie". Eventually Grant's character of Samuel is drawn into the fight. The fight occurs before stunned children.

Joseph himself is beginning a transformation. He has been a loyal Company man for centuries, acting role after role and seeing all things as temporary. By the end of the novel it is clear that he regards Mendoza as a daughter in fact, not someone playing that role for the Company. This affects how he will react to future events.
Internet Fiction
A group of adults wrote fiction revolving around not only killing Barney, but portraying him as a demonic force to be defeated in an epic tale. The most highly regarded of these were a series of short stories by writer Brian Bull including the Day of The Barney novel, and the cult hit Batman versus Barney. The popularity of stories by Bull and others elicited the attention of the producers of Barney and Friends who moved to shut down the sites, although the stories may still be found on the internet.

A theme introduced here, and recurring in the later stories, is dislike of religious fervor in all its forms, from oppressive establishments to messianic cults and even, later, to fanatic pursuit of vegetarianism, abstinence, and animals' rights. As ephemeral as they may seem, love and personal loyalty are the only eternal values.
Jihad
The Jihad to Destroy Barney is a fictional jihad that sees itself in the ultimate battle against Barney (or B'harne) and his followers, the sponge minions. The Jihad's site is a source of Barney-related fiction and essays, in addition to its Jihad Universe Role-playing game.

References to a Barney "Jihad" are found on Barney-related Usenet newsgroups as early as 1993.

The operators of jihad.net, in acknowledging the situation since the September 11, 2001 attacks, chose to continue their site, noting that "... while a group of geeky Western gamers keep hanging onto jihad.net, people with less pleasant intentions are unable to use it."

Anti-Barney songs
SectOR

"I Hate You" is the best known of the written anti-Barney songs, commonly sung by children in elementary school who have recently grown out of the show. It is a parody of the show's closing song "I Love You", which is itself played to the tune of "This Old Man". There are numerous variations, many of which start with the lyrics "I hate you, you hate me, let's get together and kill Barney" and then change into something different.

Examples:

:I hate you, you hate me,
:Let’s get together and kill Barney.
:With a one punch, two punch, three punch, four

:Let's get together and kill Barney.
:With a piece of glass and shove it up his ass
:I've never seen a dinosaur run so fast

:I hate you, you hate me
:We chased Barney up a tree.
:With a knife in his back and a bullet in his head.
:Arent you glad that Barneys dead!

:I hate you, you hate me
:Let's go out and kill Barney
:With a shotgun blast Barney's on the floor

The Barney Bunch
The Barney Bunch are a group on the website Newgrounds who seemingly endlessly submit movies to the site. The group was founded by a man calling himself MrBlue, though he used to go by the name BarneyPoop. They mostly parody kids show characters such as Barney, BJ, Baby Bop, Rugrats (See below), The Wiggles, Elmo, Blues Clues characters (Steve, Blue, etc.), Krypto the Superdog, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and rarely, they even make fun of Wade Fulp despite submitting some of their flashes on Newgrounds. The Barney Bunch depicts them all as homosexuals. They also have created their own Barnies, such as Soviet Barney (seen on picture to the right) and Cookie Barney who appears to be a tribute to South Park's Mr. Hankey.
Some of the flashes also feature strong emphasis on coprophilia or some other emphasis on feces, masturbation, and semen. Although it amuses some, it annoys many others. There have also been anti-Barney Bunch movies made such as this one. A user started a club called "Kill Barney Bunch." Each user levels up if they blam 5 Barney Bunch movies but get kicked out of the club if they give even one Barney Bunch movie a high score. The Barney Bunch has won their first Under Dog of the Week on a movie called Barney Bunch Ultimate New Year, but was deleted by Wade Fulp. Despite the group's notority for their crude flashes, they have gained a fanbase and some successful flashes.

Drew Pickles
Drew Pickles is commonly made fun of in their movies. The movies contain just replaying images of Drew Pickles with audio. They claim that Drew Pickles is a homosexual (like the Barney Bunch does to all the characters they made fun of) and a child molester. These movies are highly critisised by Newgrounds users. The users usually treat them as SPAM (the way that they treat all other Barney Bunch movies).

Antichrist Joke
POV-section
Many individuals have been associated with the Number of the Beast (666) using a variety of schemes to transform their names or mottos into the infamous number. One of the most widely-distributed works of Anti-Barney humour provides a 666 calculation for the character of Barney as follows:

1. Barney is well-described with the following phrase:

:CUTE PURPLE DINOSAUR

2. The old Latin alphabet used the letter 'V' in place of 'U', therefore the above phrase is modified to:

:CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR

3. Letters that do not represent Roman numerals are removed:

:CV-- -V--L- DI----V-

4. Add up the Roman numerals of the remaining letters:

:C + V + V + L + D + I + V

:100 + 5 + 5 + 50 + 500 + 1 + 5 = 666, which is the Number of the Beast.

5. Therefore, Barney is considered Satan.

A summary of the Antichrist calculation was included in the Barney FAQ v1.2 (posted on Usenet's alt.tv.barney newsgroup 1 December 1993). Since then, it has become one of the most widely-distributed instances of Barney humour.

Legal challenges
Lyons Partnership, which owns the Barney & Friends copyrights and trademarks, took the view that Barney spoofs were instances of trademark and copyright infringement against the Barney character. Lyons' lawyers subsequently demanded that the owners of Anti-Barney humour websites remove their material from the Internet. Some site owners withdrew their Barney-related materials after such threats while others resisted. However, American law has established parody as a fair use defence against such infringement claims.

Barney vs San Diego Chicken
In 1994, comedy sketches of The San Diego Chicken during professional sporting events began to include scenes of the Chicken beating up a purple dinosaur character. Lyons Partnership began sending letters to Ted Giannoulas, who portrays the Chicken, demanding that he stop the alleged violation of Lyons' rights on the Barney character.

These threats did not stop the mock battles between Chicken and Barney. On 8 October 1997, Lyons filed lawsuit in Fort Worth, Texas federal district court against Giannoulas, claming copyright and trademark infringement and further claiming that such performances would confuse children. This court ruled against Lyons on 29 July 1998, declaring the sketches to be a parody that did not infringe on the rights of the Barney character.

Lyons appealed this ruling to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, but again lost their case to Giannoulas on 7 July 1998.

Barney vs EFF
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) hosted online archives from the Computer Undeground Digest that contained Barney parody material. In 2001, Gibney, Anthony & Flaherty, LLP who were the lawyers for Lyons Partnership, issued a threat letter to
EFF claiming infringement of the Barney character. EFF strongly defended itself against these claims citing the established defence of parody, backed by United States First Amendment protections.

Other cases
Around 2001, the comedy website CyberCheeze posted a work entitled "150 Ways to Kill the Purple Dinosaur". In response, a lawyer's letter on behalf of Barney's rights owners threatened legal action. CyberCheeze replied to this with a substantial dose of satire.
