In the Garden of Iden is a 1997 novel by Kage Baker. Although it is set entirely in the 16th century, in Spain and England, it is a science fiction story revolving around the activities of a group of immortal cyborgs, individuals who appear human but have been transformed by high technology.

The Offspring is a popular American Punk rock/Alternative rock band from Orange County, California that was originally formed in 1984. The band now consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Dexter Holland, lead guitarist Kevin 'Noodles' Wasserman, bassist Greg Kriesel (known as Greg K), and Atom Willard on drums. Although they are primarily a punk rock and Alternative Rock group, their music contains elements of ska, grunge and pop-punk. They have sold over 32 million albums worldwide.
Mendoza is a cyborg, who, like others of her kind, has been rescued from certain death as a small child and turned into an immortal machine, then made to work for The Company. She loves her work (but is that just her programming ?) and hates 'mortals'. All that changes when, on her first mission, she encounters love and learns the terrible price she has paid to live forever.
This novel is the first in a series about The Company and its servants, human and otherwise. The series continues with Sky Coyote, Mendoza in Hollywood, The Graveyard Game, and The Life of the World to Come. The collection Black Projects, White Knights consists of Company stories, and there are allusions in the collection Mother Aegypt, and other stories.
History
Early career (1984-1993)
The Offspring started in 1984 by founders Bryan "Dexter" Holland and Greg K. The decision came outside of a Social Distortion concert, when both were refused entry. The Offspring started out as a small SoCal garage band dubbed Manic Subsidal. Kevin 'Noodles' Wasserman was welcomed into the band because he was 21 and could purchase alcohol for Dexter and Greg, both of whom were under the legal drinking age.
Synopsis
In those early times, they had multiple members filling in on other instruments, one of whom was multi-instrumentalist and school mate of future drummer Ron Welty, Marcus Parrish . Marcus left to pursue a solo career before any recording was completed. Their only recorded song under the name Manic Subsidal was called "Hopeless," and was on a compilation album called Party Animal: We Got Power II, released in 1984 by Mystic Records .
spoiler
The story is told by Mendoza, a cyborg botanist. In the introduction, she tells how in the 24th cent. there is an organization called Dr. Zeus Inc., or simply The Company. The Company has the secrets of immortality and time travel. Unfortunately immortality is only possible by converting young children to cyborgs, and time travel is difficult, expensive, and only possible when going into the past and returning to your own time. History cannot be changed.
In 1987, newly dubbed The Offspring, they recorded their first release, the 7" I'll be Waiting, released on the fictitious Black Label. Black Label was an inside joke by the band, as they could not find a production company to release the single. To make themselves more tempting to future labels, they decided to name their record company after the cheap beer they were drinking while they were pressing the records. The line up for this single was Dexter on vocals, Child C-2017 (Noodles) on Guitar, Greg on Bass, and James Lilja on Drums. Lilja quit shortly after this to persue a medical career in gynaecologyfact, and was replaced by Ron Welty, who was only 16 years old.
Dr. Zeus uses the technology simply to get rich. By travelling far into prehistory, the company creates its own immortal cyborg agents, who then have the mission of preserving cultural artifacts and other valuable items for sale in the 24th cent. Usually these items are hidden in safe places, but in the case of extinct species, for instance, they are kept in secret Company caches run by the cyborgs. In the 24th century the Company then 'finds' the long-lost objects and sells them.
In 1989, The Offspring brokered a recording deal with a small-time label, Nemesis Records. With buddhist punk-guru producer Thom Wilson and a new lineup, the band recorded the album The Offspring. Their self-titled debut was released in limited amounts by the label, only in a 12" Vinyl format.
The cyborgs are supposed to arrive in the 24th cent. the old fashioned way, by living through the intervening millennia. On the way, they can create new cyborgs from those who would otherwise die as children.
In 1991, again with Wilson, The Offspring produced the Baghdad 7". This single was instrumental to the band's signing with Epitaph Records. Wilson had been trying to get the Offspring to switch to Epitaph, a label run by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Gurewitz felt that The Offspring was just not quite pronounced enough for his label, but Baghdad convinced him to give the band a shot. Wilson and The Offspring entered the studio again and recorded Ignition. Released in 1992, Ignition exceeded all of the label's and band's expectations. The band went on tour for the next two years with punk heavyweights such as Pennywise, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and No Doubt.
Mendoza tells how she is snatched as a child from the Inquisition in Spain, having first been sold by her real parents to some 'noble Christians' who want her for pagan rites, but are instead arrested. One of the Inquisitors is a cyborg, who is able to deliver her to his fellow agents for 'augmentation'.
Rise to fame (1994-2002)
When they went back into the studio, The Offspring's relations with producer Thom Wilson had begun to strain. The darker atmosphere in the studio resulted in 1994's landmark album Smash. This album set the all-time record for most units sold by an independent label band at 8 million records. Since then, the album has extended the record to 32 million units. Fueled by hit singles Come Out and Play, Self Esteem, and Gotta Get Away, The Offspring, along with NOFX, and Rancid, helped revive punk for a new generation. Holland credits Seattle-based grunge band Nirvana for creating the environment which allowed the Offspring to succeed.
Fifteen years later she returns to Spain for her first mission. Although she trained as a botanist and wants to go the New World, she has to spend time in Europe on an expedition to England. She finds that the expedition leader is Joseph, the cyborg who saved her. He is about 30,000 years old, having been recruited from the Basque region as a child when his village was massacred. Joseph is a Facilitator, a 'fixer', a top agent. He is also world-weary, cynical and irreverent. His passion is his work, like all the cyborgs, but he also has a deep-seated hatred of religious fanaticism, partly because his parents were killed by a cult, partly because of what he has seen in his long life. The group also includes Nefer, whose specialty is farm animals, and Flavius, a technician.
After the release of Smash, and armed with a newly expanded income, the band decided to buy out the rights to their first album. Holland and Greg K then created their own record label, Nitro Records, and started signing bands. One of their first releases was a re-release of their first album The Offspring. The label also signed a number of punk bands including AFI, The Vandals, and Guttermouth. Soon after Nitro Records became Dexter's sole responsibility.
The mission is to travel to England as part of the entourage of Prince Philip of Spain, who is going to marry Queen Mary. Then they will go to the estate of Sir William Iden, who has been persuaded to let them sample rare plants from his garden. Mendoza is not pleased by all this. She is already deathly afraid of all 'mortals' as she calls them, and is further dismayed by the prospect of going to cold, wet, violent, disease-ridden England.
After Smash and the subsequent two years of touring, Wilson, who during the Smash studio sessions criticized the direction of the band's music as straying away from punk, was fired. Around the same time, the band left Epitaph and signed with Columbia Records, allegedly because they were offended by an insurance policy that Brett Gurewitz had taken out on the band. Epitaph sued, claiming that the band had not fulfilled its contract. The settlement was an estimated $2 million and the rights to all European single sales. Not only this, but the move cause a fan backlash. Most fans of the Offspring music still signed to Epitaph thought that the move to Columbia was purely for financial gain; to this day the band still deny that charge.
When they arrive, without Flavius who stays in London, two things quickly change her mind. One is a hedge of Ilex Tormentosum, or Julius Caesar's Holly, a plant with tremendous medicinal properties. It is already rare and, in the future, it is extinct. The other is Nicholas Harpole, Sir Walter's secretary. Nicholas is "tall even for an Englishman" and has a horse-like face but is very intelligent and well-educated. She is immediately attracted to him, and Joseph, always on the lookout for an advantage, encourages her to seduce Nicholas. This she does, and settles in for a long stay, having decided that the Garden is full of unusual plants she needs to spend years cataloging.
After three years out of the studio, The Offspring released Ixnay on the Hombre in early 1997. This album was not as successful as Smash, although it did sell 4 million units. The album saw the band move away from the political-punk themes common to many Epitaph bands, and more into mainstream rock with songs like All I Want, Gone Away, and I Choose. The video for "I Choose" was directed by Dexter himself. The band believe that when "Ixnay..." came out that the fans were expecting "Smash Part Two" (In their own words) which is why they moved away from their former style.
Nicholas, it turns out, has a dark past, having been a member of an ecstatic Christian cult that practised sexual freedom. Deciding that the cult leader was simply exploiting his fellows, he broke away and began preaching radical ideas, for which he was arrested and put in chains. Although Nicholas is illegitimate, he had well-connected friends and was freed with the warning to sin no more.
A year and a half later in 1998, The Offspring released Americana. This album was lighter than Smash and Ixnay in attitude, while still maintaining a punk-like sound. The album was a success both with the audience and with critics, and easily outsold Ixnay on the Hombre. The four singles, Pretty Fly (for a White Guy), Why Don't You Get a Job, The Kids Aren't Alright, and She's Got Issues, were all big hits on MTV and radio. This period is generally regarded as the peak of the Offspring's mainstream popularity.
Mendoza also has problems. As she matures, she finds she emits "Crome radiation", a psychic field which can have unpredictable effects on time and space. This is not supposed to be possible for cyborgs, who are screened for such abilities when recruited. In fact, in a later Company story, we learn that Joseph caused the tests to be fudged because the alternative was for Mendoza to be tortured to death by the Inquisition.
In 2000, the band released a new and drastically different album called Conspiracy of One. The band intended to release the entire album online through their official website, to show their support for downloading music on the internet. However, under threat of legal action by Columbia, only the first single Original Prankster was released online. The band also sold T-shirts on their website with the Napster logo on it and donated money to Napster creator Shawn Fanning with the profits.
As the novel progresses, she is increasingly torn by love for Nicholas and the need to lie to him, to play her assigned part. Nicholas himself is suspicious of Mendoza and her companions. Old Sir Walter Iden, having been given rejuvenating treatments by Joseph as payment for their stay, decides to sell the estate and move to London. The entire household is already amazed by his transformation from doddering old man to virile middle-age. Joseph is furious but can do nothing. Then, while the household is being inventoried for the sale, Joseph is damaged in an accident which would have killed a normal human. Though he talks his way out of the immediate situation with his usual skill, he is eventually found out by Nicholas, who sees him doing self-repairs to his internal machinery.
Post-Welty period (2003-present)
Nearly two years after the release of Conspiracy of One, long-time drummer Ron Welty left the band in 2003 to start Steady Ground, a band in which he plays the drums and co-produces. The parties have not elaborated on the departure.
Nicholas, having been prepared to elope with Mendoza, confronts her, believing her to be a devil in human form. She admits that, even in her own eyes, she is no longer human. Nicholas flees the estate.
In 2003, the band released Splinter. The Offspring recruited Josh Freese to record the drums for Splinter and later announced that Atom Willard would be the official replacement for Ron Welty, however his name remained absent from the album credits. The album's original title was to be Chinese Democracy, the name of the long-delayed album by Guns N' Roses. As a result, Axl Rose filed a cease and desist order against The Offspring, and to avoid delaying the release, the band chose to simply rename the album. The first single Hit That enjoyed moderate success on MTV.
Later she learns he has returned to preaching in Rochester, Kent, and has been condemned to burn by the new Catholic authorities. She runs away herself to Rochester, but is unable to convince him to recant. At this point Joseph appears, having followed Mendoza. His only purpose now is to prevent her becoming a Company renegade. He denounces Nicholas as just another fake messiah who can only lead others to destruction along with himself. He reveals to Nicholas that he has lived many thousands of years and has yet to see anything resembling the Truth that Nicholas and his like preach. Telling Nicholas that "of all the burnings I've witnessed, this is one I will actually enjoy" he takes Mendoza away.
In 2005, the band released a Greatest Hits album with a DualDisc. The Greatest Hits album contains 14 of the band's hits from 1994 to 2003, as well as the previously-unreleased song "Can't Repeat". The DualDisc contains video of Dexter and Noodles discussing the band's history and a bonus acoustic version of "Dirty Magic" from Ignition. About a month later, the band released a video DVD with music videos from all of their hits, and some videos from a live show.
The next morning, they witness Nicholas' death. Returning to the Iden estate, Joseph promises to pull strings and get Mendoza sent to the New World, as she originally wanted.
During the summer of 2005, the band played the Vans Warped Tour for the first time, and followed that with a tour of Europe and Japan. After the "Greatest Hits" world tour the band took a break from writing, recording and touring. Atom Willard was recruited by Tom DeLonge for his band Angels and Airwaves and released an album, We Don't Need to Whisper, in 2006.
In the final chapter, Mendoza arrives at New World One in the South American jungle. It is a secret Company base run like a luxury hotel, where the servants are Mayans rescued from sacrifices. She settles into her new air-conditioned existence, with an unknowable future.
Offspring, The
The band is currently recording tracks for their eighth album, with a planned release date of sometime in 2006 or 2007. An official title and release date for the album is yet to be confirmed as of now. There are also rumors of the band releasing a rare/b-sides album. A journal update on June 13, 2006 by Dexter stated that the band (minus Atom) has been meeting every week and will begin recording shortly. He also comfirmed that Atom is still a member and is only on tour with Angels and Airwaves
Band Members Themes
This novel is primarily concerned with language, culture and personality. The darker side of The Company is only hinted at here, with Mendoza resigned to working for an entity that knows everything she is ever going to do, so anything that happens to her is more likely to be planned than accidental.
Current Members
*Bryan Keith "Dexter" Holland - Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
*Greg Kriesel - Bass, backing vocals
*Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman - Lead guitar, backing vocals (Since 1985)
*Atom Willard - Drums (Since 2003) - Also plays in Angels and Airwaves
Instead we are treated to a feast of Elizabethan language and culture, from an author who knows her stuff. Technological anachronisms, such as the cyborgs' abilities to absorb knowledge almost instantly, sense things humans cannot, perform feats of strength, and run away at high speed from danger, serve only as background to the main action, or else are the source of problems. Their most important assets are Joseph's silken tongue and quick wits. "Preservers" like Mendoza do not interact well with humans, being too focussed on their work. They also do not conceal their differences as well as they should. One of Joseph's jobs is to cover for them.
Live Backing Members
*Chris "X-13" Higgins- backing vocals, percussion, synthesizer, samples, and rhythm guitar on occasion
Unfortunately (or was it planned ?) Joseph's guidance and actions lead to Nicholas' downfall, and thus to Mendoza's crash. Having progressed from naive child to boisterous cadet cyborg to dangerously besotted agent, she is twisted inside, though outwardly numb. She begins her path to isolation from even her own kind. Her nascent psychic abilities are an unknown and highly random factor.
Past members
*Doug Thompson - Vocals (1984)
*Jim Benton - Drums (1984)
*James Lilja - Drums (1984-1987)
*Ron Welty - Drums (1987-2003)
*Josh Freese - Drums on Splinter, but not an official member (2003)
Joseph himself is beginning a transformation. He has been a loyal Company man for centuries, acting role after role and seeing all things as temporary. By the end of the novel it is clear that he regards Mendoza as a daughter in fact, not someone playing that role for the Company. This affects how he will react to future events.

A theme introduced here, and recurring in the later stories, is dislike of religious fervor in all its forms, from oppressive establishments to messianic cults and even, later, to fanatic pursuit of vegetarianism, abstinence, and animals' rights. As ephemeral as they may seem, love and personal loyalty are the only eternal values.
Note: Both covers for The Offspring are shown above. The re-release of the album had a different cover due to the increasing popularity of The Offspring as well as the number of expensive, poor quality bootlegs that were being sold to fans.
