Egli è noto per il suo romanzo "Sommardansen", letteralmente "Danza estiva", tradotto in [[lingua italiana|italiano]] con il titolo "Ha ballato una sola estate", dal quale è stato tratto l'omonimo [[Ha ballato una sola estate|film]]. Questo romanzo uscì in [[Svezia]] quando lo scrittore aveva solo 23 anni. Egli ha scritto tra l'altro anche un saggio sulle politiche agricole "Mordet på modernäringen" (Assassinio nella madre industria) edito in Svezia nel 1969 e alcuni libri di carattere [[erotismo|erotico]]/[[pornografia|pornografico]], pubblicati con uno pseudonimo. Durante l'ultima parte della sua vita ha vissuto in [[Romania]] dove è morto nel [[1981]] in seguito a una lunga malattia.
Era sposato con Ligia Podorean-Ekström, un architetto e artista dalla Romania, ora residente in Svezia.
La sua vita è illustrata nel libro "Damn Ekström" di [[Ingmar Norlen]], 1993, Carlsson bokförlag AB.

In the first reaction step a [[Lewis acid]] for instance [[aluminium chloride]] {{chem|AlCl|3}} co-ordinates to the [[carbonyl]] oxygen atom of the [[acyl]] group. This oxygen atom is more [[electron]] rich than the [[phenol]]ic oxygen atom and is the preferred [[Lewis base]]. This interaction [[Chemical polarity|polarizes]] the [[covalent bond|bond]] between the acyl residue and the phenolic oxygen atom and the aluminium chloride group rearranges to the phenolic oxygen atom. This generates a free [[acylium]] [[carbocation]] which reacts in a classical [[electrophilic aromatic substitution]] with the aromatic ring. The abstracted proton is released as [[hydrochloric acid]] where the chlorine is derived from aluminium chloride. The orientation of the substitution reaction is temperature dependent.
