Manaphy is a recently released character in the Pokémon franchise. Its debut is in the 9th Pokémon Movie, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (in Japan, Pokémon Ranger and the Prince of the Sea: Manaphy), and is thought to be the Prince of the Sea Pokémon alluded to in the title of the Japanese movie. It was the 6th Pokémon of the fourth generation to be revealed by CoroCoro magazine. It was revealed alongside the silhouettes of three other Pokémon: the first one being Tamanta (the pre-evolution of Mantine), then Buoysel, and Chatot.
Manaphy is the official romanization of マナフィ, the Japanese name for this Pokémon. The final English name has been revealed in the U.S. release of Pokémon Ranger to be Manaphy as well.

Manaphy is apparently the star fourth-generation Pokémon of the ninth Pokémon movie, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, where it is voiced by Yuri Shiratori; Manaphy shares the spotlight with Kyogre. None of its relation to Kyogre or otherwise is known for certain at this point, though. It is theorized that since Kyogre has long been recognized as the Lord of the Sea and Manaphy is advertised as the Prince of the Sea, Manaphy is subservient to Kyogre. According to the ninth movie manga adaptation, Manaphy can use its “feelers” to switch people's bodies. For example, Ash and Jackie, the Pokémon ranger, get their bodies switched in the first chapter.

It makes an appearance in the Trading Card Game half-deck promoting the 9th Movie.

Beginning on Wednesday, December 6th, 2006, Manaphy's egg made mysterious appearances on Pokemon.com ; the words "December 15th 2006" and "Check our Pokemon Ranger mini-site" appeared in a picture along with a Manaphy egg. If you click this advertisement it will take you to a page involving Manaphy. It will tell the viewer to keep checking up through December to receive the code to obtain the egg, implying that Manaphy will be obtainable via this code and not a special event. Unfortunately, the month has passed and no code has been made available as of yet. On January 5th, 2007, Pokemon.com revealed that there would be more information on Manaphy soon.
On January 9th, 2007, it was revealed that different parts of the special code to unlock Manaphy will be released throughout the week, with the final part being revealed on January 20th, 2007. However, before the activation of this code, one must have: 1) completed Pokemon Ranger completely; 2) Ranger Net, a special feature that is unlocked after defeating the game; 3)you dont have to defeat the special Deoxys, Celebi and Mew missions in Ranger Net; 4) unlocked password mode in pokemon ranger.

Additionally, Manaphy is arguably the easiest legendary to obtain in Pokémon history, what with Manaphy being available to a player of Pokémon Diamond or Pokémon Pearl right from the start of the game, assuming the player has fulfilled all the requirements for the Manaphy egg in Pokémon Ranger. (although this is still in debate, there has been no information on whether or not there are certain requirements that a player of Diamond or Pearl must fulfill before being able to receive the egg from Ranger)
