Il primo Hell in a Cell match si svolse nel [[1997]], al pay-per-view [[Badd Blood: In Your House]] e fu combattuto da [[The Undertaker]] e [[Shawn Michaels]] e con la vittoria che andò a quest'ultimo grazie all'interferenza del debuttante [[Kane (wrestler)|Kane]] il quale attaccò il Phenom. Dal 2009 l'evento ha il suo pay-per-view dedicato e nel quale i due titoli massimi della federazione vengono difesi in questa tipologia di match. Undertaker detiene il record di vittorie (7 su 13 prestazioni, 8 su 14 considerando anche i ''tag team match''), seguito da [[Triple H]], che ha vinto quattro volte in singolo e due in coppia.
 
All'evento il 30 ottobre 2016 è stato disputato il primo Hell in Cell match tra due lottatrici, [[Sasha Banks]] e [[Charlotte Flair]].
