== Preemptive blocking? ==

Hi Curps. I'm curious why you [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=block&page=User%3AAlkivar_phone_1-207-786-8014 blocked] [a certain user], given that that user doesn't exist. If this is some kind of preemptive blocking of a potential inappropriate username, it seems a little futile to me, since a vandal could simply use a slightly different name. Or is there some other reason this makes sense? [[User:dbenbenn]] 00:14, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
:Apparently accounts do get deleted sometimes, and with good reason. You should probably delete the userpage too so it doesn't appear in the category. Keep up the good work.--[[User:Craw Returns|Craw Returns]] 00:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
:: There are also 135 variations on your own name that are blocked though the user doesn't exist, such as [[User:Ķûŕṕś]]. Is it true that user accounts actually get deleted? If so, do you think these deleted accounts should remain blocked? [[User:dbenbenn]] 00:23, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't believe that the block page even lets you block a nonexistent username. -- [[User:Curps|Curps]] 00:24, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
: Good point. I just [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=block&page=User%3A%C4%B6%C3%BB%C5%95%E1%B9%95%C5%9B unblocked] [[User:Ķûŕṕś]], and then was not able to reblock. I guess that indicates the account was indeed deleted sometime between January 7 and now. Odd. Anyway, I guess it makes sense just to leave all those names blocked. [[User:dbenbenn]] 00:43, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

::It's probably better to leave them blocked... I don't imagine there's anything stopping those names from being recreated, and there's no valid reason to allow obvious impostor names to edit. Deletion of usernames is news to me, the only times I've seen usernames "deleted" were as the result of a name change requested by the user and carried out by a bureaucrat, and then I've sometimes seen a familiar username suddenly recreated for the first time (presumably by the original user wishing to reserve it against use by impostors). -- [[User:Curps|Curps]] 01:06, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi David, no problem. Subpages used to be used widely on WP. However a decree came from on high not to use them. I was told that subpages were never ever to be used, by the developers. I got into trouble last year for using a subpage to test out a format for proposed infoboxes. But if that prohibition has been recinded, no problem. The thing about WP is that rules change overnight but no-one tells people. One minute subpages were all the rage. The next minute they were "never ever use subpages". Obviously they are OK again. [[User:Jtdirl|<span style="color:#006666; background-color:orange">'''Fear''ÉIREANN'''''</span>]][[Image:Map of Ireland's capitals.png|15px]]\[[User talk:Jtdirl|(caint)]] 03:06, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
: Yeah, that's certainly true about rules! I think the current rule is that subpages for articles are verboten, but they're recommended for talk page archives. [[User:dbenbenn]] 04:23, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

== JD-month error? ==

<nowiki>{{JD-month|123}}</nowiki> gives {{JD-month|123}} = 15. As far as I know, there is no 15th month ;). Perhaps that template only works for days after a certain date? I'm working on simplifying the calculation, but I don't know how to make the right calculation in the first place. [[User:dbenbenn]] 00:25, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

:Hi. The JD-month template assumes conversion to months in the [[Gregorian calendar]]... which came into existence in 1582. Thus, before that it would be producing 'months' for a calendar system which did not exist yet. A [[Julian date]] of '123' would be one-hundred and twenty-three days after the start of the Julian period... in 4713 BC. :] The formulas for this and the related JD-day and JD-year templates should work correctly for all dates in the Gregorian calendar system. For anything prior to October 1582 we get into hypothetical calendaring and it's fairly meaningless. The formulas can be derived from the [[Julian date]] article or the {{[[Template:JD|JD]]}} template. --[[User:CBDunkerson|CBDunkerson]] 00:51, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
:: Ah, thanks. I've added that explanation to [[Template:JD-month]].

:: Another question: I noticed that <nowiki>{{JD-day|{{JD}}}}</nowiki> right now is giving 21, not 22. [[Julian day]] explains that the day rolls over at noon, but the Gregorian calendar still rolls over at midnight. So is that a mistake? I guess the fix would be to subtract 0.5 from the parameter to JD-day. [[User:dbenbenn]] 05:23, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
:::In {{[[Template:JDtoGreg|JDtoGreg]]}} all the calls to JD-month/day/year (and the hour/minute calculations) add 0.5 to the parameter... precisely for this reason. The best solution will likely be to build the 12 hour shift into {{[[Template:JD|JD]]}}... which is effectively off by 12 hours currently. --[[User:CBDunkerson|CBDunkerson]] 08:50, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

: This is caused by another reason. The month artithmetic uses a modulo operator which has not been fixed in the formula used to cover years before the begining of epoch which is very far away in 4800 BC.
: The exact formula used is now described in the article speaking about [[Julian day]] (look at the table where the same formulas are detailed and used on the examples provided), and much care has been taken to implement them in MediaWiki ParserFunctions so that it will avoid all negative numbers since the begining of epoch.
: Then the three julian day conversion templates were derived from this demonstration table. [[User:Verdy P|verdy_p]] 15:28, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

== Orphanbot doesn't know about promophoto? ==

[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Michele_Norris.jpg&diff=50966619&oldid=50966113 Apparently] OrphanBot doesn't realize that {{tl|promophoto}} is a license tag. ? [[User:dbenbenn]] 00:13, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

:In computer science, it's called a [[race condition]]: At 00:03 UTC, you uploaded the image with no copyright tag. About 15 seconds later, OrphanBot retrieved the page text and didn't find a copyright tag, so it added the image to the list of images it needed to add "untagged" to. Between then, and when it got around to actually applying the tag, you added {{tl|promophoto}}. --[[User:Carnildo|Carnildo]] 04:53, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
:: Okay. It sounds like this bug could easily be fixed: just have OrphanBot re-check the page immediately before applying the no-tag tag, exactly the way a human would do it. Specifically, a human would edit the page, see whether there's a tag in the page source, and add {{tl|untagged}} otherwise. That completely avoids the race condition, because of MediaWiki's edit conflict feature. And it's kind of important to fix the bug, because OrphanBot shouldn't be incorrectly tagging images. == Moving images to commons ==

Hello, is there a way how to move free licensed images to Commons automagically? I also don't feel good doing it as I'm in fact becoming the uploader (who's responsible for copyright issues), while, in fact, I'm just moving it to a central repository. How do you deal with these issues and are there any plans to simplify/smoothen the process? ~~[[User:helix84|helix84]] 03:48, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

:Ping? ~~[[User:helix84|helix84]] 17:57, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
:: Oops, sorry for the slow reply. No, there's no easy way to move images to the Commons. You just have to download from here, then re-upload. [http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/commonshelper.php Commons Helper] can help a little, by generating an image description page to copy that has the image history information. ==[[Template:In the news]]==
Hello, Dbenbenn! I noticed that you switched the image on [[Template:In the news]] from the .png version to the .svg version. I had switched the preferred .svg file to a .png file because I couldn't upload and protect the .svg version; thus, I switched it to a .png version, which I was able to upload and protect, and then left a [[WP:AN#Image protection|request on WP:AN]], which seems to have gone unanswered. Because the .svg image is still unprotected (the image has to be uploaded and then protected; protecting only the image page leaves the image vulnerable to vandalism on Commons, where all changes are reflected here) I've gone ahead and switched the flag back to the protected .png version until the .svg version can be uploaded and protected (feel free to do this if your computer has the technical capabilities to do so). Again, see [[WP:AN#Image protection]] for more information. Many thanks! : You are mistaken. When I changed [[Template:In the news]], I also [http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=Image:Flag_of_Indonesia.svg protected] [[Commons:Image:Flag of Indonesia.svg]]. It is not necessary to upload a local copy of an image that is protected on the Commons, since normal users here are not able to overwrite Commons images. So if an image on the Commons is protected there, it can be changed on the Commons only by Commons admins, and it can be changed here only by local admins. == Might I suggest ==

Hi! I noticed you were [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template_talk:Category_redirect&diff=next&oldid=36879022 active] in resolving somethings on this page, which alas, as a 'usage guidline', seems pretty confusing. At the least, some of it is dated or seems to have been superceded by subsequent system software updates. OTOH, I just may be wrong on that suspicion.

Might I suggest archiving anything which is dated, immaterial, or otherwise inappropriate to the task, which is to shed light on when and where the template is to be properly applied. There seems to be a significant difference in the commons application in the new map categories project, wherein they are using it to tag old category names prior to relocating contents, and the use here on wikipedia. OTOH, the category page has a lot of entries if the BOT is running regularly.

Since similar use is suggested in this talk as seems to be the practice on the commons, I'm not sure what is and is not 'proper' application here on wikipedia given the rambling nature of the discussion. In sum, a clear usage section separated from the stale verbage in the discussion seems to be in order. I cannot find any info in your archives about why these pictures were deleted. Is there a chance that you remember the reasons?

I'm not comfortable in submitting any other pictures until I know what I did wrong. The Akenaten image was created entirely by me, and the Elliot image was published in 1917, and colorized by me.

Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Karen Black as Rayette.png]]'''. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]], but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our [[Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria|first fair use criterion]] in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Toronto gno.jpg]]'''. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at [[Wikipedia:Non-free content]] carefully, then go to [[:Image:Toronto gno.jpg|the image description page]] and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline]] is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. == your two years old edit on [[:Image:Turkey flag const.png]] ==
Do you remember whether you made that edit actually checking that those lines touch? With the current version, it seems to fail Turkish flag specifications. [[User:Denizz|Deniz]][[User Talk:Denizz|T]][[Special:Contributions/Denizz|C]] 11:42, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

It seems to me that the outer circle of the star is 37/2400*G inside the crescent, it is only ~1.5%, and gives the impression that the vertical line between the intersection points of circles of the crescent is tangent to the outer circle of the star, especially on not so carefully constructed images. I checked the flag on TTK website: [http://www.ttk.org.tr/index.php?Page=Sayfa&No=81]. G is approximately 6.6 cm there (on my screen), so the star's circle is approximately 1mm inside the crescent, and if you take a look at it carefully, you can see that. Thanks a lot for your work there. [[User:Denizz|Deniz]][[User Talk:Denizz|T]][[Special:Contributions/Denizz|C]] 13:37, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Do you have any example pages for me to see? I think I understand the issue you're describing. Frankly, it doesn't seem like the template needs fixing, it seems like the articles do, but I can't know without seeing specific examples. == Replaceable fair use Image:Leigh Van Valen.jpg ==
[[Image:Nuvola apps important.svg|32px|left|Replaceable fair use]]
Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Leigh Van Valen.jpg]]'''. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]], but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our [[Wikipedia:Fair use criteria|first fair use criterion]] in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

# Go to [[:Image:Leigh Van Valen.jpg|the media description page]] and edit it to add {{tlx|di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, '''without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template'''.
# On [[Image talk:Leigh Van Valen.jpg|the image discussion page]], write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, [[Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission|requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license]], or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on <span class="plainlinks">[{{fullurl:Special:Contributions|target={{PAGENAMEE}}&namespace=6}} this link]</span>. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our [[WP:FUC|Fair Use policy]]. If you have any questions please ask them at the [[Wikipedia:Media copyright questions|Media copyright questions page]]. ==Image source problem with Image:Kiyosi Ito.jpeg==
[[Image:Nuvola apps important blue.svg|64px|left|Image Copyright problem]]
Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Kiyosi Ito.jpeg]]'''. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the [[copyright]] status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{Tl|GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the [[GFDL]]. If you believe the media meets the criteria at [[Wikipedia:Non-free content]], use a tag such as {{tlp|non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use]]. See [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]] for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following [https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=upload&user=Dbenbenn this link]. I'm notifying you in case you wish to (re-)populate it by adding <nowiki>[[Category:</nowiki>1335 BC deaths<nowiki>]]</nowiki> to articles/categories that belong in it.

I blanked the category page. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of blanking and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. You are welcome to [[Help:Reverting|revert]] the blanking if you wish. However, doing so will not prevent deletion if the category remains empty.

If you created the category in error, or it is no longer needed, you can speed up the deletion process by tagging it with {{tl|db-author}}.

==Disputed non-free use rationale for File:A Grand Day Out.png==
[[File:Copyright-problem.svg|64px|left]]
Thank you for uploading '''[[:File:A Grand Day Out.png]]'''. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by [[Wikipedia:Non-free content]]. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from [[Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline]] is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free|image copyright tag]]; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our [[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Files|criteria for speedy deletion]]. If you have any questions, please ask them at the [[Wikipedia:Media copyright questions|media copyright questions page]]. == MSU Interview ==

Dear Dbenbenn,

My name is Jonathan Obar [[user:Jaobar]], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name[[User:Jaobar/Admins_to_Interview_List_1|HERE]] instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Hi Stevertigo,

I was asked [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3ADbenbenn&diff=8910586&oldid=8855555] to replace the images at [[Life and death]]. Although a screen shot is fair use, apparently modifying it (e.g. by adding numbers over stones) isn't allowed.

I've made new versions of the first three boards. See, for example, [[:Image:Go position, life and death, 3.png]]. I could copy the last two as they are, but it looks to me like they could use some cleanup too. The last image, I propose to leave out digits 5 through 9, and place stones 11, 12, and 13.

But I don't really understand the ALTERNATE VERSION, so I don't know how to fix it. Comments?

{{ivmbox|1=Hello, Dbenbenn. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
I like to thank you for your tireless work in updating the VFD page, every day, adding the new vote page. However, I would like to have a bot do that tireless work for you, if you don't mind. It will, however, not remove the first day from the VFD page until I get a clear idea when a page is removed. [[WP:BLUELOCK|Extended confirmed protection]] (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned [[WP:EXTENDEDCONFIRMED|"extended confirmed" user right]] was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following [[Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 129#New usergroup with autopromotion to implement arbitration "30-500" bans as a page protection|this community discussion]] with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, [[WP:ECP2016|a request for comment]] established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Hello,
==Congrats==

Please note that [[Time-based One-time Password Algorithm|TOTP]] based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your [[Special:Preferences|preferences page]] in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the [[Help:Two-factor authentication|developing help page]] for additional information. '''Important''': Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the [[Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Two-Factor_Authentication_now_available_for_admins|thread on the administrators' noticeboard]]. == A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==
== Question about [[:Image:Robertborden.jpeg]] ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.
Hi JillandJack,

A new user group, [[Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Reviewers|'''New Page Reviewer''']], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at [[Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/New page reviewer|PERM]]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
I left a question for you at [[WP:IFD]] on your [[:Image:Robertborden.jpeg]] entry.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available [[Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Templates|here]] but very often a friendly custom message works best.
Cheers, [[User:Dbenbenn|dbenbenn]] | [[User talk:Dbenbenn|talk]] 07:05, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at [[WT:NPR]]. <small>''(Sent to all admins)''</small>.[[User:MediaWiki message delivery|MediaWiki message delivery]] ([[User talk:MediaWiki message delivery|talk]]) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
:Re your Question about [[:Image:Robertborden.jpeg]]. Many thanks for pointing this out. Neither of us are much good on the computer and it took us a while to figure it out. Funny though, after replacing the old image with the new in the template for the Canadian PM's, they still remain on the image page list. Thanks again. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your [[Help:edit summary|edit summary]] or on [[File talk:WW2 Iwo Jima flag raising.jpg|the file's talk page]].
Since i think i followed standard practice when calling the result in [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Isaac Fanous]] (but don't often do such calls), it would help me to know whether you think you were following some policy, or just improvising independently. --[[User:Jerzy|Jerzy]][[User talk:Jerzy|(t)]] 07:50, 2005 Feb 9 (UTC)
:Hi Jerzy! I looked at [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Isaac Fanous|Talk:Isaac Fanous]], and I thought: what if some newbie comes along, and wants to start editing the article and writing notes on the talk page? He might be confused by the "'''Please do not edit this page'''" warning.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the [[Wikipedia:Proposed deletion|proposed deletion process]], but other [[Wikipedia:deletion process|deletion process]]es exist. In particular, the [[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion|speedy deletion]] process can result in deletion without discussion, and [[Wikipedia:Files for discussion|files for discussion]] allows discussion to reach [[Wikipedia:Consensus|consensus]] for deletion.<!-- Template:Proposed deletion notify --> [[User:Yann|Yann]] ([[User talk:Yann|talk]]) 16:36, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

The [[WP:ARBCOM|Arbitration Committee]] is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the [[Wikipedia:Arbitration|Wikipedia arbitration process]]. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose [[WP:BAN|site bans]], [[WP:TBAN|topic bans]], editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The [[Wikipedia:Arbitration/Policy|arbitration policy]] describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
I have created a [[Template:Postvfd|postvfd template]]. This is to be used with the subst: so it can be left on discussion pages. I noticed your recent edits to [[Augsburg College]]. Apparently my note above was unclear. I meant, have someone at the college put a copyright notice '''at the sites you copied''' (for example, [http://www.augsburg.edu/transforming/inbrief.html]) indicating that they license the content under the GFDL. Writing in our own article that it's GFDL isn't too helpful. [[User:Dbenbenn|dbenbenn]] | [[User talk:Dbenbenn|talk]] 04:49, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

==Usage of planetmath template==
|{{null}}
I haven't checked over what all you've done with the amenable group article, but if you just want to link back to PM as a reference you should use [[Template:Planetmath reference]]. You should only use [[Template:Planetmath]] if you copied over text. Also, when using [[Template:Planetmath]] we generally don't put it in the references section, it just goes at the bottom of the article (much like the EB 1911 template). ; Why have I received this message?
:The earliest versions of [[amenable group]] (last March) came from PlanetMath. I suppose that means the [[Template:Planetmath reference]] has to remain in the article ''forever'', even if all the text is eventually replaced. Good point about the "References" section, though. By the way, I like the improved smiling action. [[User:Dbenbenn|dbenbenn]] | [[User talk:Dbenbenn|talk]] 03:27, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

== Hawaii missing from [[:Image:BlankMap-World.png]]? ==
: Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were [[WP:LEVEL1|desysopped on an emergency basis]]. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh [[WP:RFA|Request for Adminship (RfA)]] after losing control of their account.

:# Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).

:# Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.

I noticed Hawaii doesn't appear on [[:Image:BlankMap-World.png]], although it is on, for example, [[:Image:LocationUSA.png]]. Did you leave it out intentionally? I'd like to make a higher resolution version of [[:Image:LocationUSA.png]], but I don't want to leave Hawaii out.
: You can find out more about 2FA at [[m:2FA]].

== Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==
:From what I remember, the projection of the map is such that Hawaii doesn't actually fit onto it &mdash; it would be slightly off the edge. Its unsatisfactory, I know, but the map was really intended for the creation of smaller images, not to be viewed as a single image. If you feel that it can be improved somehow, please go ahead. I'm far from an expert on maps and suchlike &mdash; I just made these ones because no one else seemed to be doing it at the time. -- [[User:Vardion|Vardion]] 03:04, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
::I guess objectively the right thing to do is have Hawaii near the right edge of the map. It sounds like [[:Image:LocationUSA.png]] must have Hawaii in the wrong place.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are [[Wikipedia:Administrators#Security|required]] to "have strong passwords and [[Wikipedia:Personal security practices|follow appropriate personal security practices]]." We have [[Special:Permalink/891851004#Return of permissions for compromised administrator accounts|updated]] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, [[WP:2FA|two-factor authentication]] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
::I'd like to try adding Hawaii to the map, but I have no idea how. Perhaps you could provide some information at [[:Commons:Image:BlankMap-World.png]] about how you made that map? Any details you remember would be wonderful. Thanks, [[User:Dbenbenn|dbenbenn]] | [[User talk:Dbenbenn|talk]] 10:13, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

You don't happen to be an admin at the Commons, do you? I noticed your note at [[:Image:Hammer.jpg]]. The image history you're referring to is that the "resized and compressed version" got uploaded at [[:Commons:Image:Hammer.jpg]] as the initial, obsolete version. I think the right way to fix the problem would be to delete that initial version. (Lossy compression is evil anyway, and making it more lossy is even worse.)

:I do happen to be a sysop on the Commons, but now that I think about it, it doesn't seem to need any change there. :Do you feel up to doing another bot? It would be really useful to have something to protect main page images and templates. Specifically, every day we have to protect [[Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}]] and the image it uses, and the image on [[Wikipedia:Today's featured article/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}]]. Of course, this protection should happen some time before midnight UTC&mdash;24 hours early seems reasonable. Also, shortly after midnight, yesterday's featured article and anniversary and their images should be unprotected.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
:::: [http://acmserver.cs.ucr.edu/~jlee/acmserver/version3/ Latest code]. I haven't changed anything, but the pywikipediabot framework seems to be glitchy. Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on [[m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Improving tools|better tools]] to help.

Maybe it should read:

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
== '''Z''' is a cyclic group ==
#Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
#Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
Thanks for catching my typo (leaving out infinite) on [[integer]]. You also changed:

However I think the previous wording is better. Cyclic ''means'' that there exists a given element ''a'' such that every element is equal to a power of ''a''. That '''Z''' is cyclic, ''follows'' from the fact that 1 (or -1) is such an element.

: Yes, you're right. Technically "cyclic" doesn't mean that "any integer can be expressed as the addition or subtraction of a finite number of 1s." I suspect that the distinction will be lost on anyone who doesn't already know what "cyclic" means. How about "since" instead of "meaning that"? Hi Bishonen,

== Imminent suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity ==
I pushed your image [[:Image:John Vanbrugh.png]] to [[:Commons:Image:John Vanbrugh.png]], and changed links to [[:Image:John Vanbrugh.jpg]]. I'm wondering how you "digitized" the image, exactly. Did you use a scanner? Or a camera? And whatever you used, did it produce PNG directly, or did you do some conversion afterwards?

Thanks, [[User:Dbenbenn|dbenbenn]] | [[User talk:Dbenbenn|talk]] 19:46, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[[File:Information.svg|25px|alt=Information icon]]
:Well, you saw where it comes from on the image description page, right? "User:Bishonen has digitized this image from an early 18th-century portrait of John Vanbrugh, by artist Godfrey Kneller, reproduced on the cover of "Sir John Vanbrugh:A Biography" by Kerry Downes." That cover reproduction was very nice, high quality, glossy, excellent. I asked my kid to scan it, since I wanted the best possible digital image (for my baby article), and he's a lot more skilled than I am. So, a scanner was used, and I think he was able to make a .png directly, which he told me was the format I ought to prefer. I shouldn't think he'd do it in a way that he'd need to convert it afterwards. But if you want better info than this on procedure, software, etc, I'm afraid it'll have to wait till he comes home, he's out in the streets presumably mugging oldsters and/or taunting skinheads. Back tomorrow morning, with any luck. Best wishes, --[[User:Bishonen|Bishonen]] | [[User talk:Bishonen|Talk]] 20:08, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

:: Yeah, I put that info at [[:Commons:Image:John Vanbrugh.png]] already. I'm just a little paranoid about getting as much information as possible. Thanks for the scanner info; I've added it now. ::::Kid's still alive, no skinheads out tonight, I suppose. He scanned it in GIMP and produced a .png directly (seemed indignant at the idea of such as he converting stuff). Looks good, doesn't it? I love the little cracks in the 300-year-old varnish showing up in the scan. Oh, and he actually scanned it at 600 dpi, which the original glossy couldn't quite live up to, and scaled it down to whatever it was that I uploaded. The humungeous unscaled version, which looks horribly pixely, is available, in case you'd like me to upload that? Btw, I think the book's author, Kerry Downes, should be mentioned in the Commons description, not that he has anything to do with the cover, but for maximum identification of '''which''' biography is in question. Just my 2 c worth, maybe it's not customary. (Or maybe it's even embarrassing, to be so indecently frank about ripping off a print source ;-)) [[User:Bishonen|Bishonen]] | [[User talk:Bishonen|Talk]] 03:52, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

::::: Yeah, the portrait looks great. That's one reason I bothered asking about it. I didn't realize those were cracks in the varnish, though. I thought they were wrinkles in the cover!

== Suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity ==
::::: I think it would be good if you could upload the humongous pixely version. It isn't actually used in any articles anyway, so the fact that it looks bad doesn't matter too much. And who knows, maybe someday someone will be glad of the extra resolution.

(Outdenting.) Wrinkles, feh! That's Godfrey Kneller's varnish cracking all right. Yes, I thought you might prefer the one with the maximum info. I should mention that it turns out, though, that the scaled-down .png wasn't just scaled-down, it has also had the colors adjusted slightly—we made Van a little pinker, I think. (I figured the varnish would have gotten a little yellow in 300 years, too.) Adjusted amateurishly, since no one here is a big-time image expert. Somebody who was could doubtless color the humungeous one, which I will upload completely without messing, much more delicately, if desired. However. I should upload to Commons...? That's outside my experience. It would mean creating an account there, right...? And then overwriting the existing image...? Or can I just name the new one John_Vanbrugh_2.png and upload it on wikipedia as usual, and you can collect it there? Or would that mean yet more images would need to be deleted? Perhaps you could walk me through what you would like me to do? Best, [[User:Bishonen|Bishonen]] | [[User talk:Bishonen|Talk]] 16:30, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

::Man, that pretzel looks '''delicious'''. OK, I registered on wikimedia and tried, and got "Sorry, we have a problem. Your upload is too large. The current upload limit for Wikimedia is 8Mb." (Told you it was a big scan.) I suppose wikipedia is the same limit—anyway, right now it's 8 Mb, too. :Don't tempt me......... :) Actually, I am mildly worried that we might need further changes to VfD, as it scales larger and larger. The obvious answer, and one that has been mooted before, is to give delete access to all logged in users (give or take), and allow everyone to see deleted articles, thus negating the need for a VfD process at all. There does seem to have been a recent flurry of "professional VfDers", who could unbalance the voting as it stands. Actually, I'm of the opinion that the word "votes" should be removed from the title completely, but that's another story (damn, must remember to start all these discussions somewhere!)
