==Biografia==

Originario del piccolo paese di [[Lee's Summit]], nel [[Midwest]], inizia da bambino a suonare la [[tromba]], ma a 12 anni passa alla [[chitarra]] ispirato dal successo dei [[Beatles]]. Il suo eccezionale talento lo porta a diventare, ancora adolescente, insegnante all'[[Università di Miami]] e al [[Berklee College of Music]] di [[Boston]]. La sua prima collaborazione di rilievo è quella col [[vibrafono|vibrafonista]] [[Gary Burton]], nel cui gruppo suona dal 1974 al 1977.<ref name=Jurek>{{cita web|url=https://www.allmusic.com/artist/mn0000179698|titolo=Pat Metheny Biography by Thom Jurek|accesso=11 novembre 2024}}</ref> Nel 1976 arriva il debutto come leader, l'album in trio ''[[Bright Size Life]]'', con [[Jaco Pastorius]] al [[basso elettrico]] e [[Bob Moses]] alla [[batteria (strumento musicale)|batteria]]: già da questo primo lavoro è evidente il personale stile chitarristico di Metheny, caratterizzato dal suono ovattato, il fraseggio asimmetrico e la grande efficienza tecnica. Diventa molto presto insegnante all'[[Università di Miami]] ed alla Boston's [[Berklee College of Music]], grazie al celebre vibrafonista [[Gary Burton]]. Dal primo album del 1975 (''[[Bright Size Life]]'' con [[Jaco Pastorius]]), ad oggi Pat Metheny ha avuto un crescendo di consensi sia da parte della critica, ma soprattutto da parte del pubblico, anche quando ha sviluppato nuove esperienze spingendosi fino al [[free jazz]] con [[Ornette Coleman]]. La sua produzione musicale si sviluppa su più filoni paralleli: il Pat Metheny Group, lavori solisti, duetti ed altre partecipazioni. Metheny ha vinto 3 dischi d'oro e 20 [[Grammy Award]].

Insieme al tastierista [[Lyle Mays]], Metheny ha fondato il [[Pat Metheny Group]] nel 1976. Il gruppo ha sviluppato negli anni uno stile decisamente riconoscibile, fatto di dense orchestrazioni spesso unite al [[contrappunto]] classico e molto ibridato dalla [[world music]], in special modo quella [[America Latina|sudamericana]] e Mediterranea.

=== Il Pat Metheny Group ===

Insieme al tastierista [[Lyle Mays]], Metheny ha fondato il Pat Metheny Group nel [[1976]]. Sin da allora è stato uno dei rari esempi di formazione jazz capace di raggiungere il grande pubblico, senza tuttavia cedere a tentazioni squisitamente commerciali. Il gruppo ha sviluppato negli anni uno stile decisamente riconoscibile, fatto di dense orchestrazioni spesso unite al [[contrappunto]] classico e molto ibridato dalla [[world music]], in special modo quella [[America Latina|sudamericana]].

Metheny si occupa delle melodie, Mays delle complesse armonie. Frequente è il ricorso ai tempi compositicomposti: fra i più particolari si ricordano l'inizio del pezzo ''First Circle'' (1984), che adotta un battito di mani in 22/8, oppure "5-5-7" (1989) che alterna la successione di tempi dispari che dà anche il titolo alla composizione.

Nel corso degli anni Pat Metheny è stato anche tra i primi chitarristi a capire le potenzialità del Synth per chitarra (Roland Gr 808) cambiando radicalmente ed esplorando nuovi orizzonti nei suoni per chitarra ad esempio cerca di imitare anche il suono delle trombe. Utilizzera' anche il Danelectro Coral [[sitar]] guitar nel celebre brano ''Last Train Home'' e "Minuano Six eight" dell'anno 1987 oppure nel celebre brano ''Are You Going with Me'' dove Metheny si dilunga in un lunghissimo assolo pieno di synth. Nel [[1981]] si unì al gruppo il bassista [[Steve Rodby]]. Con il batterista [[Paul Wertico]] e il [[vocalist]] [[polistrumentista]] argentino [[Pedro Aznar]] si è raggiunta la più alta espressione del PMG. Nel 1982 scrive Au lait brano ipnotico.

Al gruppo si sono affiancati negli anni successivi altri artisti, la cui collaborazione è rimasta limitata a pochi dischi, rendendo la formazione del gruppo abbastanza fluida: degna di nota è la partecipazione di [[Richard Bona]], poliedrico bassista di origini africane, nella registrazione dell'album ''[[Speaking of Now]]'' (2002) e del successivo ''Live'' (2003).

== Influenze ==

Metheny dichiara che suona la musica che gli piacerebbe ascoltare, per cui la sua musica risulta contaminata da numerose influenze, classiche ed esotiche. In particolare, tra le altre, si annovera anche la [[musica brasiliana]]. Metheny ha vissuto in Brasile e si è esibito in concerti con molti musicisti brasiliani, tra cui [[Milton Nascimento]] e [[Toninho Horta]].

Metheny ha citato anche [[Ornette Coleman]] tra le sue fonti, di cui ha ripreso numerosi brani nei suoi dischi. Con Coleman ha anche inciso ''Song X''.

A sua volta, Metheny ha influenzato numerosi musicisti più giovani; ne è la prova il grande numero di sue composizioni riprese da altri artisti ed il numero di giovani musicisti che di volta in volta collaborano con il Pat Metheny Group.

Sicuramente [[Wes Montgomery]] è stato un punto di riferimento per Pat Metheny, primo chitarrista apprezzato da Pat quando ancora era molto giovane e assisteva ai suoi concerti.

Altro punto di riferimento fondamentale per Metheny è il grande [[Jim Hall (chitarrista)|Jim Hall]].

Anche [[Ennio Morricone]] è da annoverare tra le grandi influenze di Pat Metheny.
