== Antefatto ==

A [[Backlash (2008)|Backlash]], [[Triple H]] vinse il [[WWE Championship]] sconfiggendo il campione [[Randy Orton]], [[John Cena]] e [[John Bradshaw Layfield]] in un [[Tipi di match di wrestling|Fatal 4-Way Elimination match]]. A [[Judgment Day (2008)|Judgment Day]], Triple H mantenne il titolo battendo Orton in uno [[Tipi di match di wrestling|Steel Cage match]] grazie ad un ''[[Pedigree (wrestling)|Pedigree]]''. La sera successiva, a ''Raw'', il [[General manager|General Manager]] [[William Regal]] sancì un [[Tipi di match di wrestling|tag team match]]; Orton e JBL contro HHH e Cena. Se Orton e JBL avessero vinto, avrebbero ottenuto i loro rispettivi rematch contro HHH e Cena a One Night Stand in un match a stipulazione speciale a loro scelta; mentre se Triple H e Cena avessero vinto, si sarebbero potuti affrontare per il WWE Championship a One Night Stand con la stipulazione speciale scelta da Regal. Orton e JBL vinsero il match e Orton scelse di affrontare Triple H in un [[Tipi di match di wrestling|Last Man Standing match]] per il WWE Championship, mentre JBL scelse di affrontare Cena in un [[Tipi di match di wrestling|First Blood match]].

== Storyline ==

A [[Backlash (2008)|Backlash]], [[The Undertaker]] mantenne il [[World Heavyweight Championship (WWE)|World Heavyweight Championship]] contro [[Edge (wrestler)|Edge]] sottomettendolo alla ''[[Mosse del wrestling|Hell's Gate]]''. Nell'episodio di ''SmackDown'' del 2 maggio, la General Manager [[Vickie Guerrero]] privò The Undertaker del titolo indicando l'''Hell's Gate'' come una manovra di sottomissione illegale e sancì un rematch tra The Undertaker e Edge per il vacante titolo dei pesi massimi a Judgment Day. A [[Judgment Day (2008)|Judgment Day]], The Undertaker vinse il match, ma siccome ottenne la vittoria per [[Wrestling|count-out]], il titolo rimase vacante. Così nella puntata di ''SmackDown'' del 23 maggio, Vickie Guerrero annunciò che The Undertaker e Edge si sarebbero affrontati a One Night Stand in un [[TLC Match|Tables, Ladders and Chairs match]] valido per il vacante World Heavyweight Championship e, se Undertaker avesse perso il match, sarebbe stato costretto ad [[Kayfabe|abbandonare]] la [[WWE]].

Il 18 maggio, a [[Judgment Day (2008)|Judgment Day]], [[Triple H]] difese con successo il [[WWE Championship]] in uno [[Tipi di match di wrestling|Steel Cage match]] contro [[Randy Orton]]. Nella puntata di ''[[WWE Raw|Raw]]'' del 19 maggio Orton e [[John Bradshaw Layfield|John "Bradshaw" Layfield]] sconfissero Triple H e [[John Cena]]; con Orton che ottenne quindi un [[Last Man Standing match]] contro lo stesso Triple H con in palio il WWE Championship per One Night Stand.

A Judgment Day, [[The Undertaker]] sconfisse [[Edge (wrestler)|Edge]] per [[Wrestling|count-out]] in un incontro valevole per il vacante [[World Heavyweight Championship (WWE 2002-2013)|World Heavyweight Championship]]; tuttavia, data la modalità con cui aveva ottenuto la vittoria, non conquistò il titolo (che rimase dunque vacante). Nella puntata di ''[[WWE SmackDown|SmackDown]]'' del 23 maggio la General Manager dello show, [[Vickie Guerrero]], annunciò un [[Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match|Tables, Ladders and Chairs match]] tra The Undertaker e Edge con in palio il vacante World Heavyweight Championship per One Night Stand, aggiungendo però un'ulteriore stipulazione: se The Undertaker avesse perso, sarebbe stato costretto ad [[Kayfabe|abbandonare]] la [[WWE]].

Dopo che [[Shawn Michaels]] costrinse [[Ric Flair]] al ritiro a [[WrestleMania XXIV]], [[Dave Bautista|Batista]] espresse il suo disappunto nei confronti di Michaels. I due si affrontarono a Backlash in un match con l'[[WWE Intercontinental Championship|Intercontinental Champion]] [[Chris Jericho]] come [[Tipi di match di wrestling|arbitro speciale]], al termine del quale Michaels vinse. Nelle successive settimane, sia Batista che Jericho dissero che Michaels aveva finto un infortunio in modo tale da battere lo stesso Batista a Backlash. Michaels inizialmente negò, ma poi disse a Jericho di aver realmente finto l'infortunio solo per vincere. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 19 maggio, Batista sconfisse Jericho guadagnandosi l'opportunità di sfidare Michaels in uno [[Tipi di match di wrestling|Stretcher match]] a One Night Stand.

Il 27 aprile, a [[Backlash (2008)|Backlash]], [[Shawn Michaels]] sconfisse [[Dave Bautista|Batista]] dopo che questi lo aveva incolpato di aver volontariamente costretto il suo ex mentore [[Ric Flair]] al ritiro dal mondo del [[wrestling]]. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 28 aprile l'[[WWE Intercontinental Championship|Intercontinental Champion]] [[Chris Jericho]] (il quale aveva svolto il ruolo dell'[[Arbitro sportivo|arbitro speciale]] del match tra Michaels e Batista di Backlash) accusò Michaels di aver finto un infortunio per sconfiggere Batista, ma questi negò tale affermazione. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 12 maggio Michaels affermò tuttavia di aver realmente finto l'infortunio, dando quindi ragione alla dichiarazione di Jericho. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 19 maggio, dopo che aveva sconfitto Jericho, Batista si guadagnò uno [[Stretcher match]] contro Michaels per One Night Stand.

A [[Backlash (2008)|Backlash]], [[Kane (wrestler)|Kane]] sconfisse [[Chavo Guerrero Jr.|Chavo Guerrero]] per mantenere l'[[ECW World Heavyweight Championship|ECW Championship]]. Nella puntata della ''[[ECW (WWE)|ECW]]'' del 20 maggio, il general manager [[Armando Estrada]] annunciò un [[Tipi di match di wrestling|Singapore Cane match]] tra Guerrero, [[CM Punk]], [[John Morrison]] e [[Tommy Dreamer]] per One Night Stand per determinare il primo sfidante al titolo di Kane per [[Night of Champions (2008)|Night of Champions]]. La sera stessa, Guerrero e Morrison sconfissero Punk e Dreamer in un [[Tag team match|Tag Team match]], ma al termine dell'incontro [[Big Show]] attaccò tutti e quattro annunciando che anche lui avrebbe fatto parte del match di One Night Stand, che diventò quindi un Five-Man Singapore Cane match.

LaPiù avanti, la sera stessa, dopo che Guerrero e Morrison sconfisseroavevano sconfitto Punk e Dreamer in un [[Tag team match|Tag Team match]], ma al termine dell'incontro [[Big Show]] attaccò tuttibrutalmente ei quattro annunciandocontendenti per poi annunciare che anche lui avrebbe fatto parte del matchdell'incontro di One Night Stand, che diventò quindi un Five-Man Singapore Cane match.

A Judgment Day, John Cena sconfisse John "Bradshaw" Layfield dopo che questi era stato eliminato dallo stesso Cena durante l'incontro di Backlash valevole per il WWE Championship. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 19 maggio JBL e Randy Orton sconfissero Cena e il WWE Champion Triple H; con JBL che ottenne quindi un [[First Blood Match|First Blood match]] contro Cena stesso per One Night Stand.

Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 5 maggio [[Beth Phoenix]] fu sconfitta dalla [[WWE Women's Championship (1956-2010)|Women's Champion]] [[Mickie James]], fallendo quindi la riconquista del titolo, dopo che la sua alleata [[Melina Pérez|Melina]] l'aveva accidentalmente colpita. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 19 maggio Melina consolidò il suo ''[[turn face]]'', attaccato Beth al termine del suo incontro con [[Maria Kanellis|Maria]]. Successivamente fu sancito che Beth e Melina si sarebbero affrontate a One Night Stand nel primo [["I quit" match|"I Quit" match]] femminile di sempre.

Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 12 maggio il rientrante [[Jeff Hardy]] sconfisse [[Umaga]]. Nella puntata di ''Raw'' del 26 maggio, dopo che i due si erano scontrati anche la settimana prima, fu annunciato un [[Falls Count Anywhere Match|Falls Count Anywhere match]] tra Hardy e Umaga per One Night Stand.
