SpongeBob SquarePants is the main character in the animated television series SquarePants, which first aired on May 1, 1999 on Nickelodeon. The character was designed by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, and is voiced by Tom Kenny.

SpongeBob was created and designed by Stephen Hillenburg, an artist and marine science educator. The character's name is derived from "Bob the Sponge", the host of Hillenburg's unpublished educational book The Intertidal Zone. He drew the book while teaching marine biology to visitors of the Ocean Institute during the 1980s. Hillenburg began developing a show based on the premise shortly after the 1996 cancellation of Rocko's Modern Life, which Hillenburg served as creative director. SpongeBob's first appearance was in the pilot, "Help Wanted", which premiered on May 1, 1999.
SpongeBob is a sea sponge who lives in a pineapple in the Bikini Bottom, with his pet snail Gary. He works as a fry cook at the fast food restaurant, the Krusty Krab, alongside his neighbor, Squidward Tentacles. SpongeBob is best friends with Patrick Star, and enjoys bubble blowing and jellyfishing. SpongeBob is a boating school student at Mrs. Puff's Boating School.

SpongeBob SquarePants has become popular among children and adults. The character has garnered a positive response from media critics and is frequently named as one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time.
Appearance
SpongeBob is a porous yellow sponge with large blue eyes, a mouth with prominent front teeth, dimples and freckles. He resembles a kitchen sponge more than a sea sponge, as when the show was only a rough idea, Stephen Hillenburg decided that he looked funnier as an ordinary kitchen sponge. SpongeBob can morph into other shapes at will, and can grow back pieces that fall off of him. His limbs can become variable in length and shape at will and are retractable as well as detachable. In the episode, "Graveyard Shift," it is revealed that SpongeBob's limbs can seemingly regenerate instantaneously. Also, they are somewhat edible, as SpongeBob was seen munching on a barrel of them whilst listening to Squidward's tale of the Hash-Slinging Slasher.

Development
SpongeBob typically wears a white collared shirt with a red tie and brown pants, although he has been seen running in the nude or in his underwear. As a part of the attire, his shoes are shiny black, with an almost spheric bulge at the front (although still a part of the shoe proper, unlike the balls of clown shoes). He usually wears a pair of white underwear underneath his pants, although he has been seen wearing blue, green, and red underwear with hearts on them (all at the same time, nonetheless) and even pink to honor his best friend, Patrick. At night, he sometimes wears a green bathrobe, but mostly goes to sleep with his underwear, socks and shoes. When he goes swimming at the Goo Lagoon, he wears a pair of blue swimming trunks (although he still wears his underpants, socks and shoes). He also wears a red bow tie in exchange for his necktie on special occasions.

Stephen Hillenburg first became fascinated with the ocean as a child. He began developing his artistic abilities at a young age. During college, he studied marine biology and minored in art. He planned to return to graduate school and eventually to pursue a master's degree in art. After graduating in 1984 from Humboldt State University, he joined the Ocean Institute, an organization in Dana Point, California, dedicated to educating the public about marine science and maritime history. While he was there, he had the initial idea that would lead to the creation of SpongeBob SquarePants—a comic book titled The Intertidal Zone. The host of the comic was "Bob the Sponge" who, unlike SpongeBob, resembled an actual sea sponge. In 1987, Hillenburg left the institute to pursue an animation career. Hillenburg derived the character's name from Bob the Sponge, the host of his comic strip The Intertidal Zone, after changing it from SpongeBoy because of trademark issues.
General
Creation and design
SpongeBob is described as sweet, kind, funny, cheerful, hard-working, and trusting. He has a buck-toothed grin, an expressive face and square body that compliments his pure and good nature. SpongeBob will rarely knowingly do wrong or harm to anyone except on April Fool's Day and never without remorse. However, he has been known to shout and curse (even "obscenities" such as Tartar Sauce, Fish Paste, or Barnacles) when angry or frustrated. Although he is an adult, he has a very childish nature, shown to great effect in the episode "Grandma's Kisses", at which he is at his most childish, as well as in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Hillenburg had made several "horrible impersonations" before he finally conceived of his character. He compared the concept to Laurel and Hardy and Pee-wee Herman saying, "I think SpongeBob [was] born out of my love of Laurel and Hardy shorts. You've got that kind of idiot-buddy situation – that was a huge influence. SpongeBob was inspired by that kind of character: the Innocent – à la Stan Laurel."

The first concept sketch portrayed the character wearing a red hat with a green base and a white business shirt with a tie. SpongeBob's look gradually changed. He also wore brown pants used in the final design. SpongeBob was designed to be a childlike character who was goofy and optimistic in a style similar to that made famous by Jerry Lewis.
SpongeBob is very easily overexcited about almost anything, like simple daily tasks and things of which he does not know of (such as when Squidward invited him to strike at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob celebrated for it although he did not know the meaning of the word strike). This, along with his repetitive talking and loud, annoying laughter makes him a huge annoyance to others, especially Mrs. Puff, Squidward and Plankton.

Originally, the character was to be named SpongeBoy (and the series named SpongeBoy Ahoy!), but this name was already in use for another product. This was discovered after voice acting for the original seven-minute pilot was recorded. Upon learning this, Hillenburg knew that the character's name still had to contain "Sponge" so viewers would not mistake him for a "Cheese Man". In 1997, he decided to use the name "SpongeBob" with "SquarePants" as a family name, with the latter referring to the character's square shape and having a "nice ring to it".
Perhaps the most long-running paradox of this character is his strength. He has been known to have enormous difficulty lifting even the lightest of objects. While he cannot lift light things like stuffed animals, he can still flip Krabby Patties and has been known to tote Patrick around (which cannot be an easy task).

Before commissioning SpongeBob as a full series, Nickelodeon executives insisted that it would not be popular unless the main character was a child who went to school. Stephen Hillenburg recalled in 2012 that Nickelodeon told him, "Our winning formula is animation about kids in school... We want you to put SpongeBob in school." Hillenburg was ready to "walk out" on Nickelodeon and abandon the series since he wanted SpongeBob to be an adult character. He eventually compromised by adding a new character to the main cast, Mrs. Puff, whose occupation as a driving instructor allowed SpongeBob to both appear as an adult and go to school, satisfying both Hillenburg and Nickelodeon. Hillenburg was happy with the compromise and said, "A positive thing for me that came out of it was [how it brought] in a new character, Mrs. Puff, who I love."
There is also the matter of his limited invincibility. When viciously pummeled by a bully, SpongeBob is not hurt; rather than fighting back, he continues to go through his day normally, until the bully is too worn out to keep punching. However, in "I Had an Accident", SpongeBob broke his butt in a skiing accident.

Episodes from 2000 and 2001 have given SpongeBob's birthdate as July 14, 1986, or his friends' faces to humor himself. Hillenburg used Kenny's and other people's personalities while creating SpongeBob's.

Kenny said in an episode of WTF with Marc Maron that the voice was based on a frustrated dwarf actor he encountered while auditioning for a television commercial. Kenny had originally used SpongeBob's voice for a minor background character in Rocko's Modern Life. At first, Kenny forgot the voice because he had used it only on that occasion. Hillenburg remembered it when he was coming up with SpongeBob, however, and played a video clip of the Rocko episode to remind Kenny of the voice. When Hillenburg heard Kenny do the voice, he said, "That's it—I don't want to hear anybody else do the voice. We've got SpongeBob." Kenny recalled that Nickelodeon was unsure of his casting and said, "Well, let's just listen to 100 more people." The network hoped to find a celebrity for the part. Kenny noted: "But one of the advantages of having a strong creator is that the creator can say, 'No, I like that—I don't care about celebrities'." Kenny recalls Hillenburg "let them know that in no uncertain terms." SpongeBob's high-pitched laugh was specifically designed to be unique according to Kenny. They wanted an annoying laugh in the tradition of Popeye and Woody Woodpecker.
Career
SpongeBob has a career as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant, home of the Krabby Patty. He takes his job seriously and also considers it to be his passion. His first words were "May I take your order?" He was Employee of the Month 26 consecutive times, which would mean he has worked there for at least two years and two months.

Throughout the series, SpongeBob's voice evolved from "low-key" to high-pitched. Kenny said, "I hear the change... It's mostly a question of the pitch." He said that, "It's unconscious on my part" because "I don't wake up and think, 'Hmm, I'm going to change SpongeBob's voice today, just for the hell of it'." He described it as "like erosion: a very slow process. As time goes on, you need to bring him to different places and more places, the more stories and scripts you do." Contrasting first-season episodes to those of the seventh season, Kenny said that "there's a bit of a change [in the voice], but I don't think it's that extreme at all."
SpongeBob works alongside Squidward, much to Squidward's dismay. Squidward manages the cash register for his money-obsessed boss, Mr. Eugene H. Krabs. SpongeBob, in some episodes, seems to have attained a celebrity like status in Bikini Bottom for his "masterful" fry cooking. In the episode "Squid on Strike", he is referred to as a "legend" by a young fry cook who wants to take his job and is asked to sign the boy's spatula. In another episode, he is offered a job as King Neptune's fry cook, but turns it down because Patrick was forbidden to go with him.

When SpongeBob SquarePants was prepared for broadcast in languages other than English, the voice actors dubbing SpongeBob's voice used Kenny's rendition of the character as a starting point but added unique elements. For example, in the French version of the series, SpongeBob speaks with a slight Daffy Duck-style lisp.
SpongeBob is rarely late for his job. In "Hooky" he was two minutes late because he got caught by a fishing hook, and in "Have You Seen This Snail?" he was fifteen minutes late because he was tired after searching for Gary. SpongeBob also failed to attend on time in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, where he was several minutes late after eating ice cream all night with Patrick at Goofy Goobers, and being passed over for a promotion. However, the time at which he gets to work is inconsistent. He was once seen coming into the Krusty Krab at 3:00 a.m. and said that he always came in at that time to count the sesame seeds. He often prizes his punctuality as in "Meets the Strangler", where he has a party for his 100% on time percentage, and another party 20 seconds later for his birthday (although, Patrick stated that they do what the party invitations tell them to do, so it's possible they were not celebrating his birthday).

In early 2021, SpongeBob became one of the popular character voices available on 15.ai, an artificial intelligence text-to-speech web application that allowed users to generate speech in the voices of fictional characters. Critics reported that the application replicated SpongeBob's voice particularly well, with Natalie Clayton of PC Gamer noting that the character's distinctive shrill voice was convincingly recreated through the application. The technology allowed fans to create content featuring SpongeBob saying custom phrases, which Peter Paltridge of Anime Superhero News described as "nearly indistinguishable from actual human speech" in its more sophisticated implementations.
SpongeBob also served a short stint in one episode as the speedster, "The Quickster" (parody of The Flash and Quicksilver) in the International Justice League of Super Acquaintances or the IJLSA for short. Also, SpongeBob acquires an IJLSA lunchbox (As seen and stated in "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V")

Role in SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob has also been cheated and challenged into thinking he is not a great fry cook. An example of this is in the episode when Bubble Bass, comes into the Krusty Krab and asks Spongebob for a Krabby Patty. Bubble Bass then hides the pickles under his tongue and tells Spongebob that he forgot to put pickles in his burger. Spongebob is so distressed to have failed a customer that he experiences a mental breakdown in which he forgets everything and loses his confidence. However, he regains his confidence and continues as a good fry-cook.
SpongeBob is a good-natured, naive, and enthusiastic sea sponge. In The SpongeBob Musical, his exact species of animal is identified: Aplysina fistularis, a yellow tube sponge that is common in open waters. He resides in the undersea city of Bikini Bottom with other anthropomorphic aquatic creatures. SpongeBob is often seen hanging around with his best friend, starfish Patrick Star, one of his neighbors. SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a submerged pineapple with his pet snail, Gary. His often-overt optimistic attitude makes him ignorant to negativity from others. He believes, for instance, that Squidward Tentacles enjoys his company even though he was clearly annoyed by SpongeBob's behavior in most scenarios. TV Guide listed SpongeBob SquarePants at number nine on its "50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time" list. <!--However, not all critical reception for the character has been positive. While characterized as immature, SpongeBob's mathematics are brilliant. The most noticeable instance of this is in "Squid's Day Off", where he offers the change for $1.00 in all sorts of forms, including: four quarters, ten dimes, twenty nickels, one hundred pennies, and one quarter/three dimes/seven nickels/ten pennies. Also, in Pre-Hibernation Week, he is able to calculate in two seconds flat, that there are 168 hours in 7 days, just by looking at a calendar and with no math equipment.

He frequently gets days off at the Krusty Krab, and as a result he spends his free time with his best friend Patrick Star, and especially enjoys practicing karate with his other friend Sandy Cheeks (a squirrel from Texas who wears a space suit to breathe underwater). He also likes catching jellyfish at Jellyfish Fields. To date, he has caught, named, and let go every jellyfish in Jellyfish Fields at least once, except the blue jellyfish, until the end of the episode "Jellyfish Hunter" (who he calls "Friend", after the jellyfish helps him discover Mr. Krabs was using jellyfish to mass-produce special Krabby Patties in terrible conditions).

Criticism and controversy
In many episodes, such as "As Seen on TV", "Band Geeks", "The Camping Episode", "Ripped Pants", The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and most SpongeBob video games, it is suggested he has brilliant ukelele and singing skills. He also likes to blow bubbles, surf, sun bathe, play the ukulele, and watch his favorite TV show, The New Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. SpongeBob is such a fan of the show that, he and Patrick together brought them out of retirement. They also pretend to be Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. SpongeBob portrays Man Sponge.
In 2005, a promotional video which showed SpongeBob, along with other characters from children's shows, singing to promote diversity and tolerance was criticized by a Christian fundamentalist group in the United States because they felt the SpongeBob character was being used as an advocate for homosexuality, despite the video containing "no reference to sex, sexual lifestyle or sexual identity." James Dobson of Focus on the Family accused the video's makers of promoting homosexuality because a gay rights group had sponsored the video.

The incident led to the question whether SpongeBob is a homosexual character. In 2002, when SpongeBob's popularity with gay men grew (largely due to the episode Rock-A-Bye Bivalve, where SpongeBob wore drag and raised an adopted baby clam with Patrick), Hillenburg denied the suggestion. He clarified that he considers the character to be "somewhat asexual." The term "asexual" was specifically used when discussing the character's sexual orientation rather than the context of exclusive asexual reproduction. SpongeBob's exact species is the Aplysina fistularis sponge, a species of sponge capable of sexual reproduction in addition to asexual reproduction. The character also has two biological parents. After the controversy, John H. Jeffrey P. Dennis, author of the journal article "The Same Thing We Do Every Night: Signifying Same-Sex Desire in Television Cartoons", argued that SpongeBob and Sandy are not romantically in love while adding that he believed that SpongeBob and Patrick "are paired with arguably erotic intensity." Dennis noted the two are "not consistently coded as romantic partners," since they live in separate residences, and have distinct groups of friends but claimed that in the series, "the possibility of same-sex desire is never excluded."
History
SpongeBob was originally going to be called SpongeBoy, but the name was already trademarked. SpongeBob was not always depicted as a kitchen sponge-type shape; in the early years of planning, he was depicted as a luffa and a sea sponge. In particular season four episodes, SpongeBob appears more green than yellow. SpongeBob also appears more square in season four than in the first three. His voice also appears lighter.

The name Bob, is short for Robert, which is his possible full name, as Patrick refers to him in the episode Patrick SmartPants. However, his full name as Robert is not confirmed by Hillenburg.

Voice/Character
SpongeBob's voice is described as a combination of the mayor of Munchkinland from The Wizard of Oz, and Elroy Jetson from The Jetsons. His character was influenced by Jerry Lewis, Pee Wee Herman, Charlie Chaplin, and Mike C. Doyle.

The character also became a fashion trend. In 2008, American fashion designer Marc Jacobs donned a SpongeBob tattoo on his right arm. He explained that, "I just worked with Richard Prince on the collaboration for Louis Vuitton and Richard has done a series of paintings of SpongeBob. During one appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on December 20, 2006, Tom Kenny described when he was auditioning for a Christmas commercial years before SpongeBob aired, he heard one of the midgets who were chosen for the roles of Santa's elves, who was, in a foul-mouth manner, cursing loudly to his friend. When Kenny heard this voice, he kept it in mind because he thought it was good. When he auditioned for the role of SpongeBob's voice, he kept this voice in mind.

During a panel at a fan convention in 2024, Kenny recounted a moment from a previous convention when he was asked by a neurodivergent fan whether "SpongeBob himself [is] autistic as a character", to which he responded "Yes, of course he is. [...] That's his superpower, the same way that's your superpower." The character inspired a soap-filled sponge product manufactured by SpongeTech.

Abilities
SpongeBob has many unique abilities and talents, which he demonstrates in many episodes. SpongeBob seems to have the ability to shapeshift, such as turning into a surfboard or a clarinet. Also in "Chimps Ahoy", SpongeBob blends into his surrounding. He often floats when happy, as seen in "Patty Hype", "Karate Island", "TentaclePants" and "Wigstruck." SpongeBob is known to be an amazing bubble-blower, able to create a dancing elephant or a tugboat, and even a living being as seen in "Bubble Buddy." He has also shown, in numerous episodes, to be able to grow back lost arms should they have been pulled off or destroyed(shown in Graveyard Shift). He is an exceptional jellyfisher, in one episode having caught every jellyfish in Jellyfish Fields but in another he has caught all but one (though he releases them after catching them). In the episode "Pressure", whilst arguing over the fact that sea creatures are better than land creatures, he asks if Sandy can reproduce by budding. Then miniature Spongebobs pop out the sides of him. Spongebob has the ability to regenerate body parts, as seen in the episode, "Graveyard Shift." Many other episodes show this off. Spongebob also has the ability to "shove his body parts into himself." This is seen in many episodes, with many different body parts. Including: his nose, arms, and feet. He is also seemingly impervious to bodily harm, as shown in several episodes.
