I discovered Wikipedia through the [[:en:free software|free software]] world. I begun editing in 2007 and since then I have dedicated a growing share of my free time to Wikimedia: I have been elected in 2010 to the board of [[Wikimedia Italia]] where I have been Program Coordinator (2010–2011), Vicepresident (2011–2014) and finally Treasurer (2014-). In 2012 I helped organising Wiki Loves Monuments in Italy and in 2013 I joined the WLM international team. In July 2013 I have been elected to the [[Grants:APG/Funds Dissemination Committee|Funds Dissemination Committee]] (this was [[Wikimedia Foundation elections/FDC elections/2013/Candidates#Cristian Consonni (CristianCantoro)|my candidacy statement]]).

We have a lot of excellent candidates, many of which have a great deal of experience. My prior work is visible on my user page. I, however, think we should concentrate on discussing the issues that currently face the WM movement and how to solve them.
Some of our challenges include:
*shrinking editor numbers especially on En Wikipedia
*undisclosed paid advocacy
*poor template compatibility between languages
*copyrighted material being added to Wikipedia and not being removed
*software development that has not been supported by the editing community
*lack of breadth of content in languages other than English and major European languages
*use of language that is more complicated than needed
*like minded organizations wishing to support our work but not knowing how
Some of these have relatively simple technical fixes. Others can be addressed by collaborating with other organizations. All can be improved by prioritizing a better relationship between the editor communities and the WMF. About a year ago I cut back on work as an ER physician to give more time to improve Wikipedia. I have worked to try to address all of the above issues. While some may never be fully solvable, the WMF in collaboration with the community can and should do much more to address them. I will prioritize efforts to bring this about.

We hear that the community doesn't own Wikipedia, that WMF owns Wikipedia. This is actually true. But we are not helpless. We, the community, have three designated seats on the WMF Board to provide direct input as fundamental policy decisions are actually made.

We, the volunteers, are in an uneven power relationship with WMF's expanding paid staff. We see the negative effects in the SuperProtection fiasco on De-WP and the seemingly inexorable move towards implementation of the execrable Flow.

This is why the community desperately needs alert, critical, questioning voices for its seats on the 10-member WMF Board.

I am generally supportive of the changes at WMF during the Tretikov administration but certainly remain concerned about "legacy debacles" such as SuperProtection and Flow. We need analysis of who the core volunteers are, what tools they need to contribute more effectively, and better dialog between core volunteers and professional staff and will push hard for these things.
