In 2007 the school underwent some refurbishing, with new classrooms and various upgrading implemented. The school has also recently been inspected, and achieved satisfactory results.
 
In 2001, the school underwent drastic refurbishing work, with several run-down buildings dating from the 1960s being either refurbished or demolished with new buildings built in their place. Firrhill has a successful male football team and there has also been a hockey team. In exam results, Firrhill has one of the highest pass rates in Edinburgh both for [[Standard Grade]] and [[Higher (Scottish)|Higher]], and in 2006 the school produced a number of straight A students.
