List of English football first tier top scorers
Thought I'd bring an issue at List of English football first tier top scorers as it's on the brink of being an edit war, so figured some broader input would be beneficial. In my opinion, a lot of this page is quite messy and ill-defined. The issue at hand at the moment is one of defining how to categorise "foreign" players. Currently they are listed under the headings:
* Northern Ireland
* Republic of Ireland
* Wales
* Europe (excluding UK/RoI)
* South America
* Africa
* Oceania
* US & Canada
* Caribbean
* South Africa
* Central America
* Asia
User:Spare Koppers and I seem to disagree about whether South African players should be listed separately to the rest of Africa (I say they shouldn't), and how the rest of the world ought to be organised. My take is that it should be according to continental federations, i.e. UEFA, AFC, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, and CAF. Treating the Home Nations as an exception to UEFA seems reasonable. I also note that Scotland is not listed as a "foreign" country. There's a very long history of Scottish players in English football, and there could be a good justification for rolling them in with English players, but that does need spelling out.
Thought it would be helpful for the project to take a look to help resolve this. Cripesohblimey (talk) 16:41, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
:I see no reason to separate out South Africa, but if we are to include the other countries in these islands then Scotland should be there too. There is a line in text saying . Whist it is obvious who the top 5 England players are it requires a manual scan to find the Scottish players. It also requires knowing what th scottish flag is, so there may be some MOS:FLAG / MOS:ACCESS problems with that approach.
:Has any rationale been given to split out SA, as all I can see are some reverts displaying WP:OWN tendencies by @Spare Koppers? The table was first added in Sept 2022 with no explanation given. Spike 'em (talk) 09:42, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
::Aside from possibly this edit summary… maybe? Which is a very strange rationale at best, and not equally applied elsewhere. <span style="color:#00A0DE;"><span style="color:#041E42;">Haj</span> (<span style="color:#041E42;">talk</span>)</span> 11:34, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
:::I saw that one, so should have said any meaningful rationale, as it is not consistent with the rest of the tables. It seems to be very much a I Like It argument. Spike 'em (talk) 12:25, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
::::Firstly, I was never on the brink of an edit war, secondly, I’d like to point out the page is far from being “messy and ill-defined.”
::::Blimeyitsacrybaby - What a sad little creature you are! Still chewing the same bone three years later. Desperate to find back up to fight your corner, you have now brought another ed down to your level. I see what you are now! At work I babysit some real lowlifes, low intelligence men and even smart guys who have made mistakes in their lives. Some, like you, have gnawed away at a bone for years, always looking to attach to someone for added self-importance and security, before exploding and regretting it. But they don’t live in society or pretend to be intelligent. Maybe one day I’ll babysit you, you’ll be able to show all of us your ‘A level Geography’ certificate.
::::Those who are interested, the idea for that section came from the tables I first saw, published in a football magazine, (no idea which, could’ve been a supplement) possibly around South Africa WC 2010 time or an Afcon tournament either side. Tables showed top African PL scorers and South Africa top GS with Benni McCarthy top. I added the S.A top two, pre PL era. There was no Asia or home nations tables. Australia was listed, (changed for Chris Wood), as well as USA/Canada, Caribbean and South America. Opposite page had similar tables in other top European leagues. Remember front cover, photos + interviews with Samuel Eto’o and upcoming star talent Pierre Aubamayang. Hassan Akesbi goals in France and Salif Keita refusing to become a French citizen, before being kicked out of Saint Etienne articles on reverse side of tables pages. Nevermind, blimeyitsacrybaby and sidekick Spike 'em say S.A not allowed, so anyone with old mags, don’t waste your time hunting through them.
::::@Spike 'em you, “removed South Africa as no meaningful reason given.” Tables have already been published (PL era), are factual, sourced and relevant to the page, showing whereabouts, from around the world, the top scorers come from. The top 5 S.A GS table has the same meaning as the others and belongs on this football page. Read this when Lyle Foster scored, a year after I first included S.A, All SA Players Who've Scored In The EPL - iDiski Times , it’s a reliable site for S.A football. Suppose in the years ahead, another S.A player scores 38 goals, would Sky Sports and all the others class him as the new S.A top scorer, or would he be referred to as the 16th highest scoring African in PL history? :::::South Africa is part of Africa. The fact it happened to have a table printed in a magazine once when it was holding the World Cup does not mean we have to do the same. Stop the personal attacks. Spike 'em (talk) 06:12, 20 August 2025 (UTC)

::::::I don't see any reason to include South Africa - then we'd include every country in the list and that wouldn't be sustainable, and might be SYNTH. == Redirects for new seasons ==
For some pages, such as the Bahraini Premier League, the 2025-26 season link is a redirect back to Bahraini Premier League. This makes it difficult to navigate, since I'd like to be able to see the table for the most recent season without having to navigate elsewhere - is there any hard rule on this? I think the redirect is fine, but we shouldn't update the current season to a page which just redirects back to the page you were just on if there's no content there yet. SportingFlyer <span style="font-size:small; vertical-align:top;">T</span>·<span style="font-size:small; vertical-align:bottom;">C</span> 18:16, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
:Agree, but I see this quite often with users who want "creator credit" for an article without actually doing any work to actually make the article. RedPatch (talk) 21:41, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
:Just out of a quick curiosity, I went to the redirect creators page. He has a whole list of association football season pages User:Mathew D'Marco/Articles. I clicked a random 5 as a sample, all of them are him creating redirects, no other edits and then other editors doing the legwork. RedPatch (talk) 21:46, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
::I regularly work on Danish articles and I had assumed it was a one-off thing someone had done. Did not realize it seems to be a reoccurring problem. The Superliga one, for instance, was made three full months prior to the previous league season ending. <span style="color:#00A0DE;"><span style="color:#041E42;">Haj</span> (<span style="color:#041E42;">talk</span>)</span> 22:16, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
:::If an article already has a redirect, you can still create a draft and go through WP:RMTR as an uncontroversial move. The "credit" is then removed from an editor who only creates redirects. Don't get me wrong, these redirects can be useful and some editors create redirects before editing the article so it's not always someone looking to add to their article creation count without doing much. Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 08:33, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
::::Those redirects made months in advance before even a single team has their place secured really irk me. And yeah the name mentioned above i recognize Mathew D'Marco just so he knows about this dicsussion. Kante4 (talk) 10:27, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
:::::If the parent page has no specific information about the upcoming season (which is usually the case, unless a season has significant changes like format or official name changes), then these sort of redirects serve very little benefit. <b style="color:#0033ab">Joseph</b><b style="color:#000000">2302</b> (talk) 12:19, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
::::::Just saw the page got updated with more additions this morning.... But it's not new redirects just created. It was redirects created months ago, but in the past few days the redirects got turned to articles, so now they are good to appear on his "created list". (This to me shows the intention is clear is to have them as his created list, as why else would you hide them for 3-6 months) So there's definitely way more than just appear on that list. Probably another 100+that are just waiting for others to create for him. I would support a mainspace article creation block to prevent these spamming of redirects with zero intention of actually creating an article RedPatch (talk) 13:24, 15 August 2025 (UTC)

:::If you're talking about the redirect creation, then best is to just continue discouraging it with talk page comments or WP:RfD Yoblyblob (Talk) :) 17:48, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
::::The problem is it appears that the TalkPage comments on their page seem to just be repeatedly ignored and as for RfDing it requires someone to specifically and tediously monitor it (and the user will likely just continually recreate them based on history already.)
:WP:RFD#DELETE #10 is a great argument against this, these upcoming seasons are never mentioned at that target article, so a redirect does not really provide anything of value. Red link can encourage earlier creation as well, I have nominated many "future season" redirects for discussion and all have been deleted. Hello. I would like to include recent financial statistics for the top 15/20 clubs worldwide. I would either write it in the club articles themselves or in the sub-articles on finances/ownership. It would look something like this (on the left side). Source for all data would be Deloitte Football Money League.
The advantage of such a table would be that it would provide a quick and clear overview of the clubs' finances and their relative financial position by also indicating their place in the ranking. I find pure figures better than long texts when it comes to financial statistics.

:I would say yes (with editorial discretion about whether its in the club articles themselves and/or in the sub-articles on finances/ownership of course). == Soccerway reliability ==
Is Soccerway "back"? Are you guys still experiencing issues? I'm seeing more and more profiles with complete data. I just don't know if all the statistics are 100% accurate. How reliable is it at this moment in time? Paul Vaurie (talk) 17:54, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
:Yes, I've noticed complete profiles again, and the stats appear fine. Layout is awful though! GiantSnowman 17:57, 21 August 2025 (UTC)

:::It's not 100%, I've seen countless Spanish and Brazilian players with incomplete or incorrect data still. Futhermore, the search engine looks way worse than before (I can't search players through the browser URL anymore) and the results are not that exact: for an example, if I search for Marcos González, my first result is Marcos Gorriti (????). == List of English football first tier top scorers#Excluded centurions ==
Do we really need this massive WP:COATRACKy section about how the Premier League don't recognise goals scored before the Premier League started in the list of top Premier League goalscorers? It's not like there aren't plenty of sources out there that do include goals scored both before and after 1992..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 19:39, 22 August 2025 (UTC)

:Something else on the page, which was included on its talk page two years ago and may have come to this forum, was the ranking of players by geographic area. It appears to be yet another case of geographical trivia overrunning common sense. You have an Oceania section including Australians, which in football terms is kind of accurate unless we exclude the few goals that Viduka and Cahill scored after Australia became Asian. Speaking of "Asian", we find there Mile End's finest Mustafa Kemal Izzet, who played for Turkey, a country that has never been anything other than European in football terms, as with the two Israelis, unless Rosenthal scored his while his country was still bizarrely Oceanian. Now, the icing on the taking liberties with geography must be the case of Clyde Best. I'm sure all us pub bores will point out that Bermuda is in the Atlantic Ocean, not the Caribbean, but is this island off the coast of South Carolina Central American? That makes as much sense as calling Ronaldo a Central European for being born on a rock in the middle of the ocean, i.e. none. ::The Carl Cort one is funny. He was considered English during his entire career as a footballer in the English top flight and played youth football for England, but because he played six games for Guyana at the age of 34, he is considered to be Central American (in spite of the fact Guyana borders Brazil). == Miljan Mrdaković ==
Hi, could somebody protect this page from this user. They have been vandalizing the page for over a decade. Writing just OFK instead of OFK Beograd is incorrect and ambiguous. "OFK" is a prefix, while "Beograd" is the main name of the club. That is like using just VfB for Stuttgart. Thank you 47.204.190.12 (talk) 22:24, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
:I have now reinstated the "Beograd" where due, thus reaching a compromise. I was only trying to compress the infobox as much as i could (if you notice, the full name still appears in wording), no need to: 1 - call me a VANDAL when i have done nothing of the sort in 19 years here; 2 - not notifying me of this discussion and trying to prevent me from ever editing again in Mr. Mrdaković's page!
:I may have lost my temper in an edit summary or two, and for that i apologise. Attentively RevampedEditor (talk) 23:35, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
Nacho Gil
Major League Soccer stuff, his infobox says one thing and the chart below another. As we (all now should) know, infobox should only have regular season stats; i tried to have a look at Soccerway, but the new format isn't "shedding any light" on the matter.
Can anybody have a look? Thanks in advance RevampedEditor (talk) 13:23, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
:Career stats table was last upday 30 May 2024, so includes half of the 2024 season, whereas the infobox was updated at the end of the 2024 season. That's the reason for the disparity. Table also includes 1 playoff game as a league game, which it shouldn't. Should be in other/playoffs. Leagues Cup should also be in Other, not under Continental. RedPatch (talk) 13:59, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
