Stadium Arcadium is the ninth studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. It is a double-album, first released in Germany on May 5, 2006, and released on May 9, 2006 in the United States on [[Warner Records|Warner Bros. In the United States, Stadium Arcadium became the band's first number-one album. Stadium Arcadium (2006) is the Grammy Award-winning ninth studio album by alternative-funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers.

After the culmination of the Stadium Arcadium tour, guitarist John Frusciante left the band in July 2009. It was his last album with the band until the release of Unlimited Love in 2022, more than a decade later.
According to an interview with frontman Anthony Kiedis in New Musical Express, Stadium Arcadium was originally scheduled to be a trilogy of albums each released six months apart, but was condensed into one 28 track double album (the first in the band's career so far), and the remaining 10 tracks would be released as b-sides.

Background
It was released in May of 2006. Over one million copies of the album were sold within the same month of release in Europe. The title has gone gold or platinum in 16 countries across Europe, and has sold over 7 million copies total worldwide to date, making it the best selling album of 2006. Rolling Stone named Stadium Arcadium the second best album of 2006 and Billboard named it the 8th best album of the year.
After the release of the band's previous album, By the Way, the Red Hot Chili Peppers embarked on a world tour, from July 2002 to a mid-June 2004 date at London's Hyde Park. The band later appeared at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and at Rock am Ring to tie up their tour in support of By the Way. The band then settled down to begin recording its with producer Rick Rubin, with whom the band had recorded its previous four albums.

The formation and recording of Stadium Arcadium took place at "The Mansion" where the Peppers had recorded their 1991 breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Given the house's reputation for being "haunted," guitarist John Frusciante recalled that he felt "there were beings of higher intelligence controlling what I was doing, and I didn’t know how to talk about it or explain it...it was very clear to me that the music was coming from somewhere other than me." However, Kiedis noted that during the recording process of the album "everybody was in a good mood. John Frusciante said in 2006, "I didn't want to necessarily have songs that were just heavy metal songs the whole way through, but I wanted to have a certain amount of songs that had choruses that were just heavy metal riffs." Rodriguez-Lopez appears on the album, performing a guitar solo on the track "Especially in Michigan". Frusciante subsequently appeared on The Mars Volta's next three studio albums and performed a few times live with them as well. Frusciante would also go on to release a joint studio album with Rodriguez-Lopez, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & John Frusciante, in May 2010.
The song "Dani California" is about the death and demise of "Dani", the same character from their hit singles "By the Way" and "Californication". "Dani", according to Kiedis, is a representation of every girl that he has come across in his life. The album's last song "Death of a Martian" was also an ode to Flea's dog Martian, a Mastiff, who died during the album's recording.

Frusciante also began layering his guitar playing, something he had not done before (many layered guitar parts appeared on Mother's Milk, but this was mostly because of the insistence of the producer, although it was against John's will); he also used a modular synthesizer on many songs after doing so on his 2004 album Shadows Collide with People. While Frusciante was pleased to have used the modular synthesizer on the album, he admitted that when the band began rehearsing for the tour, it was frustrating because many of the songs sounded empty without it. This meant the band had to rework many of the songs to perform them live.
Similar to Californication, Vlado Meller's mastering of Stadium Arcadium features a heavy use of audio compression. However, the vinyl versions of Stadium Arcadium have been mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray at AcousTech from the 30 ips analog master tapes, "the mixes are all powerful, very dynamic, tuneful, exciting and quite high fidelity sounding."

| quote = That thing at the end of Wet Sand – where the guitars come in and sound like a harpsichord – they’re just the treble pickup of a Stratocaster, three tracks in harmony with one another, playing that same riff you hear in the first part of the cycle of that section. But I recorded it with the tape slowed down, so that when it’s sped up it sounds like a harpsichord.
*The first single, "Dani California," premiered on radio stations worldwide on April 3 2006, and has been very successful in both rock and pop markets becoming one of the band's most successful singles to date topping many charts worldwide and reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which was the band's second highest charting single in the United States in their career, next to "Under the Bridge" which reached number 2 in 1992. The video leaked onto the internet on April 1, and was officially released to music television stations worldwide over the subsequent days.
*"Tell Me Baby" was the second single and video was released on July 17, 2006. The song didn't show the success of "Dani California," but it did reach number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, their 10th song to do so.
*"Snow ((Hey Oh))" was released in November 20, 2006. It would be the band's third single and video released and would also top the Modern Rock Chart and also make chart history by becoming the Peppers eleventh single to top that chart. The song proved to be much more successful than "Tell Me Baby" on many charts.
*On February 12, 2007 the band released the fourth single, "Desecration Smile." The single and video was an international release only, charting on several European charts.
*"Hump de Bump" was slated as a US, Canada, and Australia only single to be released in March 2007, but after the release of the video over the internet, the band was given lots of positive feedback and the song release was pushed to April 7, 2007 and will be a worldwide single.

When I went home and listened to Burning Of The Midnight Lamp by Jimi Hendrix it had the same sound and, despite the Jimi Hendrix box set saying it was a harpsichord, I’m positive it’s a guitar that’s sped up.

"Stadium Arcadium" has been met with generally favorable reviews, with Rolling Stone stating it the band's best album yet and rating it 4/5 and Q magazine said it was one of the year's best albums and rated it 5/5 whilst All Music Guide called it over-produced and self-indulgent and thus rewarded it 3.5/5. Either way, the album has been generally well received by critics and fans alike and was a great commercial success, selling over 7 million copies worldwide to date and its first three singles reaching #1 on the US Rock 100.

According to Kiedis, the album is musically and lyrically influenced by the various relationships the band members were experiencing at the time of its conception. Kiedis states that "love and women, pregnancies and marriages, relationship struggles – those are real and profound influences on this record. And it's great, because it wasn't just me writing about the fact that I'm in love. It was everybody in the band. We were brimming with energy based on falling in love."

Kiedis recalled that the band "wanted to [release all 38 songs] on three separate discs that [would] be released in installments...something about those songs made us really like each one. However, by the time we planned to release the third installment in two years, we’ll be writing new music." This was the impetus for the band to pare those songs down to 28, a process Kiedis described as "heartwrenching." Nine of the unused songs have been released as B-sides. He explained the reasoning behind the decision to name the album "Stadium Arcadium" by saying that it had more "variety and verve compared to its predecessors [and] we each have things we do best and it’s all in there. Everybody played their part and expressed their creativity to the max."

Stadium Arcadium received generally favorable reviews. Rolling Stone critic Brian Hiatt deemed it the band's best album to date and noted Kiedis' growth as a singer and songwriter: "the guy [Kiedis] who once yelped, 'I want to party on your pussy!' whisper-sings a gentler, though not unrelated, proposition: 'All I want is for you to be happy/And take this moment to make you my family.' The delicate 'Hard to Concentrate' is the most vulnerable Peppers tune ever—a full-on marriage proposal from Anthony Kiedis, with Flea's muted bass and John Frusciante's layered guitars slow-dancing over Afrobeat hand drums." The magazine later ranked it as the second-best album released in 2006, behind Modern Times by Bob Dylan. Q magazine said it was one of the year's best albums, while Andrew Perry of The Observer stated it was "relentless, purposeful, as moreish as McDonald's... mainstream America in excelsis." Josh Kun of Los Angeles Times wrote that "they've never sounded this good as musicians. The use of analog tape lends a raw, organic touch to the whole album and the Chili Peppers come off more assured and confident than they ever did back when they made a career out of bragging." Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic was more reserved in his praise, finding the album overproduced and self-indulgent despite the presence of "something pretty great and lean buried beneath the excess". Pitchfork critic Rob Mitchum wrote that the album "is split between slightly askew mid-tempo pop and regrettable relapses into funk and muso noodling".

Cover art
Artist Storm Thorgerson, known for providing seminal album artwork for numerous bands including Pink Floyd, T. Rex, Audioslave, The Mars Volta, and Muse, was asked to create the cover art for Stadium Arcadium. Thorgerson provided at least three possible covers for the album, however, his ideas were ultimately rejected and a simple cover featuring yellow "Superman" lettering and a blue background with planets was used instead.

The inside artwork of the album featured a band portrait, another band portrait recreating the classic cover of the Odds & Sods by the Who as well as images of the band floating and on fire.

Trivia
*The album was leaked as early as May 2, 2006, prompting Flea to post a complaint in his online journal Fleamail. News of his complaint spread quickly on the internet and Flea's complaint was mocked by many., with some even charging that it was a publicity stunt.
*The songs "Stadium Arcadium", "Especially in Michigan", "Tell Me Baby", "Readymade", "If", "Turn It Again" and "Snow ((Hey Oh))" were used in advertisements for the X-Games.
*The Japanese film Death Note features "Dani California" as its theme song. Its sequel uses "Snow ((Hey Oh))" as its theme song.
*John Frusciante does not use his Gretsch White Falcon guitar on this album, for which he reportedly paid $30,000. A 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom was featured on the album mainly on the track "Readymade."
*This is the only Red Hot Chili Peppers album that does not feature an asterisk anywhere on the album packaging, except in the special edition vinyl which it is featured holographically on the front of the LP.
*This is the only Red Hot Chili Peppers album to not have the word "fuck" in any of its songs, because of this Stadium Arcadium is the first RHCP album to not need a Parental Advisory label, although many other Red Hot Chili Peppers Albums .e.g. By The Way rarely had the label.
*The song Dani California was the first Red Hot Chili Peppers song to have radio airplay on Radio Disney.
