Beta Contest
Unlike RPGs such as Knights of the Old Republic, conversation branches are extremely limited and do not significantly influence the course of an event.
I removed this paragraph from the article:
Oh yeah, KoToR is a great example with it's two conversion possibilities, which quite often don't affect anything.
Stupid.

|text=THQ ran a competition in January 2007 offering the winners the chance to play the beta version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., in a 24-hour marathon session. The event, scheduled to take place on 24 January 2007, was subsequently changed to a 12-hour session days before it was supposed to occur. On the morning of the event, the winners were met at the venue by the THQ staff that had organized the event, who were embarrassed to report that they had been unable to get any copies of the game.
}}

I can find no actual information about this contest, other than uncited forum posts. Considering how widely publicized the development of this game was, I find it hard to believe that a huge mishap like this would go unpublished.
:KOTOR has some rather extensive conversation branches. Would you care to clarify your contention in a productive manner? --<b><font color= "00CC00">Scottie_theNerd</font></b> 14:13, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm surprised that paragraph lasted so long! I added it not long after the event happened (or, er, didn't happen), as I was one of the "lucky winners".
What language does everyone speak? I mean I would assume ukrainian (since chernobyl is there) but it might be any one of the Slavic languages. Actually, I cannot even prove whether or not there is a single language, or if there is a mixture. Note: Ukrainian should probably be assumed when considering the fact that the developer is Ukrainian, and since game developer are well known for being cheap and making shortcuts to get stuff out on time. 216.15.122.216

Honestly I'm surprised it didn't get reported on either, but then I didn't reach out to any of the gaming media at the time (I had a raging hangover), and I assume the other winners didn't either. I didn't even make it as far as the venue on that day; I was still on the train to London to go to the event when a guy from Multiplay who goes by the name Elbonio called me to tell me the event was off.
:It's Russian, if I'm not mistaken. --<b><font color= "00CC00">Scottie_theNerd</font></b> 04:33, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

THQ had already promised all the winners a free copy of the original game, which I did eventually receive - but they also promised to send a copy of Company of Heroes as compensation for cancelling the event, which just to rub salt in the wound never actually showed up.
::Yes it is. English is also used in the game (at least the US version). – Zntrip 03:11, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Just had a dig through a few old email accounts in an effort to track down something more substantial on it, but I've not had any luck. The original contest is vaguely mentioned at https://web.archive.org/web/20070116085021/http://www.thq-games.com/uk/competitions/index/1, whilst the original contest post was located at http://www.thq-games.com/uk/news/show/1533 - but I've been unable to find it on any web archive. Googling that link finds a couple of discussions about it at the time, but unfortunately not much seems to have survived the intervening 13 years.
:::It's used sporadically. The non-conversation voices are in Russian. There's probably more Russian than English, ironically. --<b><font color= "00CC00">Scottie_theNerd</font></b> 13:48, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Updates to Plot Section
Nah. Most of it is just idle chatter. One of the guys in the bar'll shout "Эй, друзья!", Hey, friends!. Others will just complain, etc. PaZuZu 03:16, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Based on the recommendation of the assessment above, I've gone through and overhauled the Plot section. Word count has been reduced to approximately 640 and the content has been revised and condensed. Grammar, structure, phrasing, and spelling have all been cleaned up as well. Removed noosphere link, added a link to Clear Sky page at the reference to Scar, and changed the first sentence to state number of endings and that the described ending is considered canon in the trilogy.
A strange trivia
Please feel free to review and revise if necessary. The next adjustment might be to combine Plot & Setting into one Synopsis section as assessment advised above. "I said come in! Don't stand there!" --SDRobots (talk) 15:19, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

With March 6, 2024 release of Xbox/PS version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. original trilogy, the official subtitle has now been updated to "Shadow of Chornobyl"
With the March 6, 2024 release for PS/Xbox of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Legends of the Zone Trilogy the subtitle for ALL S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games now have Ukrainian language-based spelling for Ukrainian сities (e.g., Chornobyl and Prypiat), I think it makes sense to add a separate section "Title" for this article to prevent confusion from the readers as to why the games subtitle is now "Shadow of Chornobyl".
None that anybody has found, no.

Note, since March 6, 2024 there are now a ton of official announcements about the change "Shadow of Chornobyl", so making article update for this should be non-contentious (although I noticed that there was already some edit warring recently by Samf4u who reverted back to Chernobyl, from IP's updated Chornobyl). Below please see the sources that verify the "Shadow of Chornobyl" update that I will be using in the article update:
Engine
*The section on the X-Ray engine is obviously very out of date... It's far from next-gen these days, and "on-par with Half-Life 2" isn't really something to brag about for a 2007 title... But if I remove all this, the "Engine" section is pretty much empty. Can someone with a more detailed knowledge of the engine flesh this out a bit? --203.206.183.160 02:24, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
** Agreed. --seifip 14:14, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
*** The official site contains a page devoted to describing the engine (http://www.stalker-game.com/en/?page=engine) however a copy and paste would be obscene. Could it be a good idea to highlight some of the particular features such as their lighting system which seems to develop a much more realistic set of shadows than other games (torch lights overlapping to some effect rather than a binary effected by torch / not effected by torch was one thing I noted in a trailer).

I realize that it might be a big change for some folks that may be used to the old Russian spelling of Chornobyl/Prypiat, but please refrain from any pointless edit warring and just please be understanding that this is an official update from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers, and these updates to the article are simply reflecting it. ::Hi ToeSchmoker, I did not revert anyone's editios, in fact my updates are done fully in the spirit of WP:BOLD. You on the other hand, just flat out revered everything I edited (diff), implying that all my edits were non-consructive. I honestly disagree with your revert - all my edits were backed by multiple sources, whereas your revert simply references WP: consensus. Well consensus is not set in stone and per WP:BOLD when new stuff happens (as it did here, because developers updated the titles for the old games), we can worked towards a new WP: consensus that incorporates those updates. Your flat-out revert of all my edits does not seem like a constructive way towards achieving that new WP:consensus. ::: I reverted back to the last revision prior to your changes that another user (Samf4u) disputed as indicated by their reverting because in this case the next step is to establish consensus via talk page discussion. Samf4u was not edit warring but it would however be edit warring if you were to continually make your suggested edits when other users are disputing them. I take issue with you stating that I am "implying that all [your] edits were non-consructive." I am not and I would appreciate you did not do this in future. Thank you. ::::Hi ToeSchmoker I thing we got on a wrong foot - I didn't try to accuse anyone of edit warring I was just hoping one could be avoided. Per your suggestion of "next step is to establish consensus via talk page discussion", I would like to summarize my edits and would like to understand feedback from both you ToeSchmoker and Samf4u.
::::So summary of my edits:
::::* On March 6, 2024 with developers' release for PS/Xbox of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. of Legends of the Zone Trilogy the subtitles for ALL S.T.A.L.K.E.R games was aligned to now have Ukrainian language-based spelling for Ukrainian сities (e.g., Chornobyl and Prypiat); the sources I provided above (including updated official game website https://www.stalker-game.com/en/) confirm this subtitle change. Specifically the subtitles for the 1st and 3rd games in the franchise were renamed to "Shadow of Chornobyl" and "Call of Prypiat" (earlier in March 2022 the subtitle for the 4th game was also renamed to "Heart of Chornobyl"). This way Ukrainian city Chornobyl is spelled the same in both 1st and 4th instalment in the game.
::::* 2) My updates had 2 primary components: 1) add a new section called "Title" explaining how the title/subtitle was changed by developers a few times: "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost" -> "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl" -> "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl". 2) update the article itself to reflect updated title "Shadow of Chernobyl" (note that English language gaming news websites didn't report on this, but a couple of Ukrainian language gaming news websites did report on it, namely at itc.ua and at games.24tv.ua -> I included the links to those links in my updates too.
::::I would really appreciate your guys feedback regarding my edits, so we could establish a consensus via talk page. Thanks. 163.53.144.106 (talk) 22:59, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
:::::Hi all, My only edit to the article was to correct what I perceived as spelling errors while using Huggle. I don't have much interest in such topics so I'll leave it to you. Cheers! Samf4u (talk) 23:17, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
::::::I believe the most recent edit is satisfactory in which the lead now mentions the differing spelling for consoles. This is most accurate as the title remains unchanged for the original/PC version of the game. The updated title could be mentioned under "development and release" with regards to the update about the console release - I don't think a whole new section to explain the difference is necessary. ToeSchmoker (talk) 17:43, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
::::::: Hi Samf4u thanks for the reply - based on your reply it sounds like you don't mind my updates to reflect post March 6, 2024 updates that clarify that the title is now "Shadow of Chornobyl".--163.53.144.106 (talk) 19:44, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
::::::: Hi ToeSchmoker the most recent update is actually misleading because "Shadow of Chornobyl" is not a "console title" as the recent update stated, rather it's an official update of the title in general: see my sources above where it clearly states that the original trilogy's official website https://www.stalker-game.com/en/ clearly states that the 1st games subtitle is now "Shadow of Chornobyl" (the official trilogy website does not call it "console title"); similarly user agreement for the original trilogy of the games https://www.gsc-game.com/eula/USER-LICENSE-AGREEEMENT.pdf clearly states that the games subtitle after update on March 6, 2024 is now "Shadow of Chornobyl" (note that user agreement does not say anything about "console title", it just the title).--163.53.144.106 (talk) 19:44, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
::::::::It's not misleading. The original PC version of the game still uses the spelling "Chernobyl" across all the major retailers (Steam, GOG, G2A to name a few) still selling the game, as far as I can see (and the same for Call of Pripyat). Even with regards to the new re-release trilogy, you have the likes of Eurogamer, IGN and Gamespot continuing to use the original spellings when specifically referring to the console release. == Critical Reception ==

* PC Gamer UK, issue 173. Previous issues of the mag claimed that it would be an "exclusive review", so the lack of a critical reception section on this article solidifies that claim. Once a few more reviews have been written we should put everything relevant in the present tense rather than the future (indeed, there's an argument for doing that now) and will hopefully have enough material to make a big, "proper" critical reception section. Citations for such a section should be easy to get.

Stop including it in the article. It's already mentioned in the menu on the right.

"RPG/FPS"?
The article claims the game is an "RPG/FPS" hybrid, then proceeds to say that the game has no RPG elements like leveling-up or experience points; the "RPG" aspect comes from character interaction and the like. That's not an RPG; that's an adventure game. RPG minus character stats equals adventure game. Is this yet another example of so few people having playing real adventures like the old Sierra and LucasArts classics that they now think a game with a storyline must be an RPG? 71.146.1.170 04:04, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

:The RPG elements that make it an RPG include the following. Weapon upgrades including scopes and grenade launchers, different armors with different stats such as radiation protection. Special items throughout the world that have increased stats on standard weapons. Artifacts collected from the game world have a number of effects such as bulletproofing and burn resistance and can be used on the player's belt in a large number of combinations in order to protect the player at the cost of other attributes and can be swapped out at any time. Objects give stats buffs such as drinks which can increase stamina or decrease radiation for a given time or amount. Just because there aren't player "levels" doesn't mean it isn't an RPG albeit a shallow one. nutcrackr 10:06, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup Needed
Alright, looking at this article it has a nice set of information on it. However, I believe it could use some cleaning. Some ideas to make it more presentable and easy to the eyes:
*Either a stub or a full fledged article on just the X-Ray Engine, as I don't see why it needs to be featured so dominently.
*Removal of "decoration" pictures and posting of gameplay/intergral pictures.
*Expanded critical reception and trivia.
:expanding the trivia is not necessarily a good cleanup idea. see Wikipedia:Avoid_trivia_sections_in_articles 82.39.211.80 01:56, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
*Better language and wording on Development
Hope you guys understand what I mean. Looking for insight first.Skapunker1337 19:52, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

I like the changes so far, I'll try and help a little myself. So other things I think we could usher in as well:
*Expanded Gameplay/Mechanics section
*Story Section (sumerizing the plot with/without spoilers)
*At least another pic of gameplay that is relevent.
Nice job. Skapunker1337 19:15, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Anti-aliasing
In this game you have to choose between the DirectX 9 renderer, which has an awesome lighting model, and the DirectX 8 renderer, which supports anti-aliasing. This is a pretty big shortcoming (AA has been standard for how many years now?) and deserves to be mentioned in critical reception. I added this this morning but it's been reverted. What's the deal? <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.20.237.230 (talk) 14:32, 3 April 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->

: The link you cited isn't a review of a game, nor is it particularly critical of the engine's inability to do antialising. Your claim that antialiasing is a standard feature in games is personal opinion, therefore not encyclopedic. The whole issue is barely worth mentioning. That's why I reverted it. --Pkaulf 15:13, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

::Um, but antialiasing is a standard, supported feature in most games. That's not an opinion. I don't see why it shouldn't be mentioned, it's a valid complaint. We don't want a biased article.
:: Enfestid 17:05, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

::: Antialiasing support is already covered adequately in the "Technology" section. Claims such as "AA is a standard feature!" are NPOV and contribute nothing to the article. It may be a valid complaint, but Wikipedia isn't the place for users to be putting their tuppence worth in. So if you feel it merits being complained about, then please locate some criticism about the AA from a notable source. --Pkaulf 18:11, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

:::: You're right, it is an opinion that AA is a "standard" feature of 3D games. Although I'm pretty sure that 9.9 out of 10 gamers you ask about it have the same opinion. So who defines what's standard? I can publish my own review of the game and link to that, would that satisfy the requirement? <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 63.246.188.101 (talk) 23:14, 3 April 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->

:Pkaulf, not to sound rude, but it seems like you want no negative aspects of the game to be mentioned in the article judging from your edits and responses.
:How is the game not having anything other than deferred AA not something that should be mentioned? It is something that I believe would be important for people to know. I'm sorry, but your logic of saying "AA is a standard feature" is absolutely absurd. For one, the context in which you have written that is completely different than merely mentioning that actual AA is not supported, something that is supported in most games.
:Criticisms don't have to be from a "notable source" to be featured in Wikipedia last time I checked. Articles shouldn't be opinionated in nature, but I fail to see how mentioning that the game does not support the standard form of AA that most games support is "NPOV." It's not. And you can cite sources that are opinionated in nature, they don't just have to be "notable."
:I'm sorry, but where do you find this in the Wikipedia guidelines? I've been looking and can't find it.
: Enfestid 04:29, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

:: OK, you're really confused. I'm not saying it shouldn't be mentioned! Where are you getting this from? Like I said before, the engine's antialiasing support is already explained perfectly clearly - without any bias - in the technology section! There is nothing else to say! Apparently 99% of people think AA is a standard feature in 3D games so surely it goes without saying? --Pkaulf 10:17, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

:: Also, just to clarify here, I'm not the one who wants to put "AA is a standard feature" on the article. The irony here is that deferred rendering is going be ubiquitous with almost every high-end 3D engine, so we're not gonna be seeing much MSAA in future, at least until DX10 is fully adopted. --Pkaulf 10:32, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

::: What do you base this statement on? <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.20.237.230 (talk) 19:43, 4 April 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->
::: Check this out: http://ati.amd.com/developer/siggraph06/Wenzel-Real-time_Atmospheric_Effects_in_Games.pdf - slideshow from SIGGRAPH 2006 given by Carsten Wenzel of Crytek which specifically states that CryEngine2 uses "traditional rendering style" and that deferred shading is not a requirement (slide 7). It also states that supporting MSAA with deferred shading is "tricky" (slide 10), but doesn't rule it out. So I think that we should remove CryEngine2 from the sentence in the Engine paragraph talking about other engines using deferred shading. <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.20.237.230 (talk) 21:01, 4 April 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->

::Any perspective on the game - positive or negative - must come from a reliable source. I'm not sure what this anti-aliasing argument is about though. Yes, most games do feature AA, but I believe the point being made here is that there is no source that states that AA is indeed standard, and that claiming such is original research rather than breaching NPOV. Anyway, I don't see any reason not to mention that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. lacks anti-aliasing. --<b><font color= "00CC00">Scottie_theNerd</font></b> 08:02, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

:Pkaulf: I am unsure why you keep removing my edit. It is not opinionated in nature in any way, it merely mentions a limitation of the engine. I don't claim that it's a "standard" feature in other games. Why do you keep insisting that any negative information not be in the article? It's not a NPOV statement, it's just a statement giving information.
:I love the game as much as anyone, but the information should be noted. The source you cited did NOT state what you claimed it did -- it only said AA wasn't available in the game. So please, do not tell me my source is wrong for no reason when the source you're citing doesn't even claim what you're stating.
:If the way I wrote it is incorrect according to the source, then by all means edit it to fix it. I don't want incorrect information in the article either.

Article tense problem, other problems
(Sorry if this comes out wrong, I am a wiki noob)
I have some points about the article; much of it seems to be writted in the future tense for obvious reasons (the game wasn't out). Someone's gonna have to sort it all out but I'm too tired. Secondly, Duty is rather wrongly portrayed in the introduction. Duty is an organisation that seeks to contain and perhaps destroy the Zone. They cooperate with the military and fight Freedom (whose philosophy I myself find harder to interpret as different individuals in the organisation have different opinions; I find that the common-held one is that people need to learn about the zone and it can benefit mankind). Thirdly, does anyone know why the Ukranian military in this game have access to Spez Naz? Henners91 00:10, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
