Arthur Rimbaud was born into poverty in [[Charleville]], France in 1854. The young Rimbaud was a restless but gifted student. By the age of thirteen or fourteen, he had won many prizes in literature and writing; he also composed poems and dialogues in Latin. He ran away from home in [[1870]], and eventually arrived in [[Paris]], where he was forced to live on the streets. Immersed in the Parisian street-life Rimbaud began to write poetry, inspired partly by [[Charles Baudelaire]].

Rimbaud wrote to several famous poets but received either no reply or a disappointing mere acknowledgement (as from [[Théodore de Banville]]), so his friend, office employee Charles Auguste Bretagne, advised him to write to [[Paul Verlaine]], a rising poet (and future leader of the [[Symbolism (movement)|Symbolist]] movement) who had published two well-regarded collections.{{sfn|Ivry|1998|p=29}} Rimbaud sent Verlaine two letters with several of his poems, including the hypnotic, finally shocking "Le Dormeur du Val" ("The Sleeper in the Valley"), in which Nature is called upon to comfort an apparently sleeping soldier. This hundred-line poem tells the tale of a boat that breaks free of human society when its handlers are killed by "Redskins" (''Peaux-Rouges''). At first, thinking that it is drifting where it pleases, the boat soon realizes that it is being guided by and to the "poem of the sea". It sees visions both magnificent ("the awakening blue and yellow of singing phosphores", "''l'éveil jaune et bleu des phosphores chanteurs''") and disgusting ("nets where in the reeds an entire Leviathan was rotting" "''nasses / Où pourrit dans les joncs tout un Léviathan''").
