Shaun Ricker effettua il suo debutto nella NWA Wildside, ma è nella Heartland Wrestling Association che effettua i suoi primi passi con il nome "Deuce". Ottiene l'HWA Television Title contro JT Stahr nell'agosto del 2004 e lo perde contro lo stesso dopo un mese. Dopo aver tentato senza successo di appropriarsi del titolo massimo della compagnia, è costretto ad abbandonarla nel 2005 dopo aver perso un Career vs Contract match contro Chad Collyer per l'HWA Heavyweight Title.
