* 1935 Dr J.S. Webster, O.St.J. started to organise First Aid lectures in Singapore.

* September 1938 The first uniformed division of the Brigade was formed.

* 1952 The first St. John Council was formed.

* 1978 The Brigade was reorganised and upgraded to National Headquarters status, with 4 Districts and 10 Areas.

* 1996 The Brigade was once again restructured to simply consist of 10 Zones.

* 2005 Current Chief Commissioner, Dr Chen Sze Hua, O.St.J., takes office.

In 1877, the '''St John Ambulance Association (SJAA)''' was established in Singapore to train people in first aid. The '''St John Ambulance Brigade (SJAB)''', the uniformed companion body of the SJAA, was established in 1887 to gather qualified volunteers to render medical aid during public events and emergencies.

Apart from promoting and assisting St. John Ambulance Association & Brigade as well as to raise the necessary funds to support their work, the main objects of the Council, are briefly as follows: <br />

This brought our organisation status at par with St. John Ambulance organisations in other independent nations. The Brigade was structured into 4 Districts and 10 Areas.

== Organisation and Structure ==

In 1996, the Brigade was again re-structured. The District level was removed, and the Brigade became simply structured into 10 Zones.<br />

St John Singapore consists of 3 Sub Divisions, the St John Association and the St John Brigade and St John Fellowship.

The St John Association is the training wing and was established in 1885. It provides training in First Aid, Home Nursing, Child Care, and other related subjects to the public.

St John Ambulance is a ranked organisation, and members fall into a hierarchical structure of command. [[St John Ambulance Ranks and Insignia|St. John Ambulance ranks]] run from Member, through Corporals, Sergeants and Officers all the way up to the Chief Commissioner. However,it is difficult to equate the rank structure to equivalent ranks in other military/paramilitary organisations.

The St John Brigade is the uniformed branch which provides First Aid and ambulance services, and is largely known for its Cadet (CCA) and Badger programmes.

==Cadet Movement==

The St John Fellowship is the old comrades association of St John Singapore. It was established in April 1996 to support the activities of St John Singapore and enable former members to keep in touch with St John and with each other. It also organise meetings, social events, and other activities as desired by members to advance the work of St John and the Fellowship.

St John Ambulance in Singapore largely consists of cadet members - i.e. secondary school students who joined St John as their [[Co-curricular activity|CCA]]. Currently, the various schools under the 10 Zones are as follows:

Students of participating schools may join St John Brigade as their Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), as cadet members. Typically, cadet members undergo training in four core competencies – First Aid, Home Nursing, Transportation of Casualty, and Foot Drill. These are conducted through Routine Training and other Training Camps that vary from Corps to Corps and District to District. In the interest of holistic development, cadet members also have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities which can allow them to earn Cadet Proficiency Badges. Outstanding cadet members are awarded the prestigious Chief Commissioner's Badge after attaining 12 proficiency badges (with at least 2 from each of the 4 badge groups, Knowledge of the Order of St John (KOTO) Badge, and the Total Defence Badge).

As St John the Baptist Day, 24 June, normally falls during the Singapore School Holidays, corps typically observe St. John Day on the first Wednesday after school reopens. On that day, members don their Brigade Uniform during official school hours. A St John Day message by the Chief Commissioner is read out by the Principal or student leader during the morning flag raising ceremony. Where possible, the St John Flag is also raised alongside the State Flag and the respective School Flag. On that day, all St John Ambulance Brigade members in schools will report to school in Brigade Uniform, and the St John Day Message by the Chief Commissioner will be read out by the Principal or a student leader. At present, there are a total of 4 uniforms of St. John Brigade Singapore, which are listed as follows:

# Field Uniform

Cadet members are presently only entitled to wear the Ceremonial and Field Uniform, the latter of which is also the most widely recognised uniform of the St. John Brigade Singapore. The Field Uniform consists of a black beret with a cap badge, depending on which is entitled to the wearer. Nursing members wear a hairnet as well. The top consists of a white short-sleeved shirt / blouse with plastic concealed buttons. For female members, due to the white uniform, bras should be of decent colours if worn. Shoulder flashes bearing the Maltese Cross with twin lions and unicorns, together with the words "St. John Singapore" are worn on both sleeves. A black epaulette is worn on both shoulders denoting the rank of the member. The bottom consists of black pants / culottes, which is worn with the St. John belt. Black socks and black low-cut boots are worn with the shoelaces tied in the formal-style.

The National First Aid and Home Nursing Competition, typically referred to as the National First Aid Competition (NFAC), is an annual inter-district competition in which all 5 districts send teams to compete in each of the 4 categories. Prior to the NFAC, each district organises its own Inter-Corps First Aid and Home Nursing Competition with a similar competition framework. The 4 champion teams from each district represent their respective districts in the NFAC. These competitions aim to uphold the high first aid and basic nursing standards of the cadets.

===Cadet Proficiency Badge Scheme===

The objective of the Cadet Proficiency Badge Scheme is to encourage cadet members to take an interest in subjects outside their normal curriculum and to widen their interests by carrying out these activities in their leisure time. Such activities may also be organized by their respective Corps/Zones. Certain activities are also organized by the NHQ.

- Passed a minimum of 4 subjects before transfer

- Must not be above 20 years of age on the date of qualifying for the badge

*The Chief Commissioner's Badge

Upon obtaining 12 proficiency badges(at least two from Category I & II, no more than two from Category III + Knowledge of The Order) and meeting the following criteria:

- Promotion to the Adult Section from the Cadet Section

- Passed a minimum of 4 subjects before transfer

- Must not be above 20 years of age on the date of qualifying for the badge

Cadets may start working for these badges the moment they are enrolled as members of the St John Ambulance Brigade. They are encouraged to make personal progress with additional courses over and above subjects that are taught during the weekly training/meetings so as to achieve the Commissioner's Badge and subsequently the Chief Commissioner's Badge.

Throughout their secondary education, cadets are also awarded ranks as follows:

Upon completing their secondary education, ex-cadets may continue their service to the Brigade. Some choose to just return as friends of the school and conduct training for their juniors, while others undergo further formal training to prepare themselves to be appointed as Brigade Officers.

Brigade Officers hold ranks at Corps, Zone or National Headquarters level, and these ranks are further divided into Grades 6 through 1 (Grade 1 being the most senior). The most senior Brigade Officers hold ranks of Super Grade 4 through 1.
