"Scarecrow" is episode eleven of the first season of the television series Supernatural. This episode deals with paganism and a being from Norse mythology known as a Vanir.
Plot synopsis
Sam and Dean Winchester are urged by their father, John Winchester, to uncover the reason behind the mysterious disappearances of young couples in a rural Indiana town. But the two have a falling out, and Sam hitchhikes to the bus station while Dean goes into town to investigate, introducing himself as John Bonham (the name of the drummer from Led Zeppelin). The titular scarecrow is a Vanir which protects the town for a dire price. It is revealed in this episode that a dark force is conspiring against the remaining members of the Winchester family. A young woman named "Meg Masters" is introduced as the daughter, if taken in the literal sense, of a possible central antagonist who is dogging the brothers' every step. Meg befriends Sam, but, feeling that Dean must be in trouble, he abruptly leaves the bus stop to go back to find Dean.
Production notes
*This episode aired out of its sequential production order.
Featured music
*Lodi - Creedence Clearwater Revival
*Bad Company - Bad Company
Trivia
*William B. Davis, probably best known as the mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man on the X-Files, appears briefly as a college professor Dean seeks out to gain knowledge about which Norse deity he's dealing with. Like his famous X-Files counterpart, the good professor turns out to be part of the conspiracy.
*The episode takes place during the second week of April. However, there are ripe apples all over the scarecrow's orchard. Apples are harvested in the fall.
*After Dean shakes the Professor's hand and walks towards the door, to the left of the screen a camera is briefly visible for a couple seconds.
*The small town featured is in Indiana, but when Dean drives back at night there is a train passing over him with the "Canadian National Railroad" logo on the side of the second car.
*In the beginning during the teaser, Vince and Holly are walking through the orchard when they actually hear something behind them (the scarecrow). Right as they whip around you can clearly see car headlights and taillights to the right of their shoulders.
*The trees in the orchard aren't apple trees, but rather appear to be hazelnuts trees
