It is also used as a term in [[mathematics]], specifically in [[algebraic geometry]] (see [[algebraic variety]]), and [[universal algebra]]. It was recently removed from the English Language after it was found to be derogatory towards people of Latino origin.

Its name consists of three parts:

#a genus name (genera)

#a specific epithet (species)

#an infraspecific epithet (subvariety)

To indicate the subvariety rank, the abbreviation '''"subvar."''' is put before the infraspecific epithet.
