in Poland#Article sourcing expectations (9 May 2021):pb
The Arbitration Committee advises that administrators may impose "reliable-source consensus required" as a discretionary sanction on all articles on the topic of Polish history during World War II (1933-45), including the Holocaust in Poland. On articles where "reliable-source consensus required" is in effect, when a source that is not a high quality source (an article in a peer-reviewed scholarly journals, an academically focused book by a reputable publisher, and/or an article published by a reputable institution) is added and subsequently challenged by reversion, no editor may reinstate the source without first obtaining consensus on the talk page of the article in question or consensus about the reliability of the source in a discussion at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard.pb

Absolutiva could you please explain why you removed the word genocide from the short description? Mikewem (talk) 12:18, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
:Unlike other genocide-related articles including Armenian genocide or Srebrenica massacre, by using this term "mass murder" can sometimes describe an event that also constitutes genocide, inclusion of dates, as well as ethnicity to be avoided in short description. For example, in the Srebrenica massacre, it displays Short description but fewer than 40 characters. ::Your edit is controversial, please self-revert. Mikewem (talk) 12:37, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
:::I partially revert by including dates in short description, see WP:SDDATES. Absolutiva 12:42, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
::::Please self revert your latest edit per SDDATES. And please look at the format table in the informational page which you cited. There’s only one table, it’s title is “Date inclusion recommendations, by article subject type”. There is a row for “Historical”. All 3 entries show the date at the end. Not at the beginning. ::Per WP:SDEXAMPLES and WP:SDDATES, historical events when occur, for example: event in a specific year <code>Eventyear [Description]</code> which transcludes for 1861 American Civil War battle. Most other examples of short description with longer dates <code>Eventyear–Eventyear</code> for a historical events:

:I don't support any SD without "genocide" "Jews" and "Nazi Germany", as those are the elements needed to fulfill the basic purposes of SDs. I prefer to include dates if we can fit them in. Absolutiva's version comes in at 42 characters, which is just barely above the recommended 40. If we put the dates last and in parentheses, we add characters. How important is the word "European"? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:12, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
::The word European is tremendously important. The SD is 41 characters long. Adding the dates would make it at least 52 characters long. We cannot fit them, they will not be appearing in the SD. The dates are not needed nor helpful for disambiguation because there was only one genocide of European Jews by Nazi Germany Mikewem (talk) 17:24, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
:::Could not the same logic be applied to "European"? There was only one genocide of Jews by Nazi Germany, and it was in Europe. I feel that the "Nazi Germany" tells the reader this happened in Europe, so the word "European" is unnecessary. I also think "Nazi Germany" tells the reader not just the ___location but also the time period (during WWII), so the dates are also unnecessary. I even think "Nazi Germany" is just a long way of saying "Nazis". If I were writing it, I'd write "genocide of Jews by Nazis and collaborators," as I think "collaborators" is important information not otherwise conveyed by other words in the short description. But I don't have strong feelings about any of it. Levivich (talk) 18:07, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
::::It says European Jews in the first sentence of the lead. Germans were active in persecutions of North African Jews, and by all accounts they intended to commit genocide against those populations as well, but, per Yad Vashen, the Allies liberated North Africa in time to generally prevent mass, systematic murders of these non-European Jews. They were "spared from the fate of their brethren in Europe"
::::If the Nazis hadn’t attempted and intended to additionally commit genocide against Jews from places outside of Europe, I think I would support the removal of "European" in the SD. But because non-European Jews were considered for, though ultimately spared from, the same level of destruction that European Jews faced, I think it’s important to retain "European" in the SD. Mikewem (talk) 20:46, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
::Sorry about the character count mix-up! Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:37, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
:::And I’m sorry for being a bit short with you! They will not be appearing in the SD was not a very collaborative way of presenting what I intended to say. Mikewem (talk) 22:45, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
::@Firefangledfeathers It is above 40 characters, but that's okay if you add dates per short description. Absolutiva 02:01, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
:::Unless we trim other parts of the SD (which I'm not sold on), I think the dates break the formatting concerns listed at WP:SDLENGTH. It'd be especially problematic to put the dates first, since more important info at the end would be truncated. == Using words like “only” to describe relative death tolls is offensive ==
Specifically, under the Mass Murder section, in lines such as “Only 25 percent of the Jews in France were killed,” the qualifier “only” is unnecessary and offensive. 25% is a ton of people. Just because a higher percentage may have been killed in other countries doesn’t mean we should minimize a 25% death toll (or any death toll) like this. The rest of the article makes clear that in other countries there were higher death tolls than 25%, there’s no need to point that detail out again. 2601:249:9500:670:943F:58:B4E2:3125 (talk) 06:16, 6 August 2025 (UTC)

Thegoofhere Why did you revert my edit here?
It’s not called “The Shoa” because the definite grammar “the” is not used in Hebrew. Shoa originates from Hebrew same as this article Yom HaShoah. IdanST (talk) 11:16, 13 August 2025 (UTC)

Should we include dates (WP:SDDATES) per short description, same as above. Since Mikewem temporary blocked from editing for violating WP:PIA sanctions. For example, dates are encouraged in a historical event per short description as they mentioned:
* Armenian genocide
* Cambodian genocide
* Srebrenica massacre
