A '''many-core processing unit''' is a type of [[microprocessor]]-based system characterized by:

* multiple standard [[instruction set]] [[microprocessor]] [[Multi-core (computing)|cores]],

* where the number of cores is higher than what is available in computers built for mass market [[personal computer]] market.

For example in 2008, [[Quad Core]] CPUs are becoming mainstream. During this time, a single computer system with 64 cores would be considered a Manycore system.
