▲Peter Campbell ran as the Australian Greens candidate for Kooyong in Victoria, Australia in the 2001 and 2004 federal elections.
The Greens primary vote in Division of Kooyong increased from 10.7% in 2001 to 12.3% in 2004. The sitting member Petro Georgiou (Liberal) suffered a swing against him of -0.42%, which was opposite to the state-wide swing to the Coalition in Victoria. Kooyong received the 11th highest Green primary vote in Australia in 2004.
The Division of Kooyong in inner east Melbourne has traditionally been a "safe" Liberal seat. It is now classified as "fairly safe Liberal" as voters move to the Greens and the Australian Labor Party.
Kooyong received the 11th highest Green primary vote in Australia, demonstrating that the Green’s effectiveness in bringing to the forefront key issues such as Tasmanian forests, funding for public education, services before tax cuts and humane treatment of asylum seekers. These issues struck a chord with voters in Kooyong.
Safe seats don’tdon't attract much attention or spending in Australian elections – the major parties tend to lavish all their election goodies only on marginal seats becauseas it is the outcome in marginal seats that determines who wins elections. ▼
The District of Kooyong in inner east Melbourne has traditionally been a Liberal seat. It is now moving towards marginal status as voters move to the Greens and the Australian Labor Party. In a twist on the 'Doctors Wives' syndrome the partners of 2004 Greens Senate candidate David Risstrom and 2004 Greens Kooyong candidate Peter Campbell were both female doctors.
