Therion (formerly Blitzkrieg) is a Swedish symphonic metal band founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. Its name was inspired by the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion. "To Mega Therion" is Greek for "The Great Beast" and was a title used by occultist Aleister Crowley. Originally a death metal band, Therion adjusted its musical style by adding orchestral elements, including choirs, classical musicians, and even a full orchestra at their concert performances. As a result, they are considered pioneers of the symphonic metal genre.
Therion is a Swedish Symphonic metal band. Its name originates from Greek, where therion (θηρίον) means beast; the name refers to the beast of the Christian Book of Revelation, however the band's name itself originates from the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion. Therion was founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. Beginning as a death metal band, they later turned to combining orchestral elements with their metal music employing heavy use of choirs and classical musicians.

Therion's music takes its themes for the lyrics from different mythologies and ispractices, based on concepts ranging fromincluding occultism, magic and ancient traditions and writings. The majority of their lyrics are written by Thomas Karlsson, head and founder of the magical order Dragon Rouge of which Johnsson is a member. The band has seen many changes in line-up and style in its 18 year history.

Band historyHistory
Beginning: Blitzkrieg and Megatherion (1987–1989)
Therion were formed originally under the name Blitzkrieg in Upplands Väsby, Sweden. The founder, Christofer Johnsson was originally the bassist and vocalist, he had only played the bass for a few months prior to forming the band. Joining him in this new band were Peter Hansson on guitar and Oskar Forss on drums. Johnsson and Hansson had met in several musical groups, while Forss was an old school friend of Johnsson's.

Blitzkrieg and Megatherion (1987–1988)
Blitzkrieg were mainly influenced by the bands Metallica and Slayer, but their sound was similar to the bands Venom and Motörhead. The band however never recorded any proper demos, and only did two concerts together before deciding to split up in 1988, only a few recordings surviving till this day. Johnsson however did not give up the idea and switched to guitar and began to be influenced by the Swiss band Celtic Frost. The band was reformed under the new name Megatherion with the original line-up returning, the name was shortened to Therion almost instantly. Johnsson decided to concentrate fully on vocals and guitar, so Erik Gustafsson from the death metal band Dismember joined as a bassist.

Therion originated as the band Blitzkrieg in Upplands Väsby, Sweden. In 1987, Christofer Johnsson, who had played bass for three months, teamed up with guitarist Peter Hansson, whom he had met in several musical groups, and drummer Oskar Forss, who was Johnsson's old schoolmate. The band's main influences were Metallica and Slayer, but its sound resembled Venom and Motörhead. The band had only two concerts. In March 1988, it split up after some disagreements with Forss.
Debut releases and first contract (1989-1993)
The band recorded the two demos Paroxysmal Holocaust and Beyond The Darkest Veils Of Inner Wickedness in 1989 with their new death metal sound. The demos were recorded on cassette only. The first demo was released in 600 copies. They made 100 copies at home of Paroxysmal Holocaust before having them professionally copied. So 1100 copies of the demos were sold all in all.

In 1988, the band reformed with the moniker Megatherion, which was based on the album title To Mega Therion by the Swiss heavy metal band Celtic Frost. Johnsson has mentioned that therion is Greek for "beast" and likens it to Belphegor. Johnsson switched from bass to guitar and Peter Hansson played guitar. Johan Hansson (who would later form the Swedish death metal band Crematory) became its bassist, and Mika Tovalainen its drummer. After the band shortened its name to Therion, Erik Gustafsson of Dismember replaced Johan Hansson as the bassist, and Oskar Forss returned and replaced Tovalainen as the drummer. Matti Kärki, later to be the front man of Dismember, also joined the band and took over the vocals.
This got the band enough attention to get their first EP released, Time Shall Tell. It was still technically a demo of the band, as it was only published by a local store in a printing of 1000 (although the store would later bootleg another thousand copies unofficially). The record got the band their first record deal with Deaf Records. Through this company, they released their first full-length album Of Darkness...

Demos and record deals (1989–1993)
Of Darkness... consisted of songs Johnsson had written in the 1980s, despite having newer songs, the band chose to save them for their next full release. Of Darkness... can be seen as a progressive death metal album, it contained mainly influences that were not standard to death metal at the time. The lyrics were very political, in the vein of Napalm Death and other 80's Hardcore Punk bands. The deal with Deaf Records was only for one album, and the band had never had a good relationship with the label in the first place, so after the release, they moved to Active Records.

In 1989, Therion released two demos: Paroxysmal Holocaust and Beyond the Darkest Veils of Inner Wickedness. Matti had left the band shortly after the first demo, so Christofer took over the vocals again. In 1990, the band worked with House of Kicks, a local record store, to print and release the Time Shall Tell demo on 12 inch vinyl. The latest release enabled the band the sign a one-album record deal with Deaf Records.

Therion's first full-length album, Of Darkness..., released in 1991, featured songs that Johnsson had composed in the 1980s. The band called it "both a debut album and the end of an era", and described it as progressive death metal, since it contained elements that did not quite fit the standards of death metal at the time. The lyrics were very political, in the vein of Napalm Death, Nuclear Assault and other late-1980s hardcore punk bands.
The band began to record their second full length album Beyond Sanctorum in 1992. Erik Gustafsson was forced to leave the band to return home to the USA, but the band continued as a trio with Hansson and Johnsson filling in on bass. The record became very popular and got the band their first live show offers in central Europe. The record Beyond Sanctorum shows a more experimental edge to the music, with keyboards and clean vocalists used sparingly, Therion became known as an experimental death metal band from this record.

Therion signed with Active Records for its second album, Beyond Sanctorum. Prior to the recording sessions, Gustafsson left the band to return to the United States, so Therion continued as a trio with Hansson, Forss and Johnsson, the last of whom covered the bass. The album shows a more experimental edge to the death metal music; keyboard and clean vocals were used sparingly.
After this recording, the band ran into a few problems. Forss decided to leave the band as his wife was expecting their second child and the band lifestyle and financial situation did not suit his responsibilities to his family. Hansson also quit the band after health problems. The shows in the Netherlands were played using a new line up. Piotr Wawrzeniuk took up drumming duties, he knew Johnsson from the band Carbonized, in which Johnsson also played. The guitar was taken up by Magnus Barthelsson, an old school friend of Johnsson's while Andreas Wahl took up the bass.

After the recording, Therion changed members again. Forss left the band, and Hansson had to quit for health issues. For the Central European gigs, Johnsson brought in drummer Piotr Wawrzeniuk from his other band Carbonized, bassist Andreas Wahl, and Magnus Barthelsson who was an old friend from school.
Musical metamorphosis (1993-1996)
With the new lineup, the band recorded the experimental Ho Drakon Ho Megas in 1993. As a death metal record it was very experimental, incorporating elements of jazz, industrial music, traditional 1980's heavy metal and religious chanting. This new record scared many death metal fans off the band, but the band developed a small following who appreciated the change and innovation the band had created. Active Records at the time decided to scale down their operations and the band was switched to the new owners Megarock Records. This company supported a tour with Therion supporting the bands Grave and Massacra throughout Germany.

Musical metamorphosis (1993–1996)
The band, despite being popular with its hardcore fans, was still largely unknown. Sales were poor and the band members were having a hard time making ends meet. Despite the work they put in, there was no financial success for the band. Because of this, Barthelsson and Wahl were forced to quit the band. Fredrik Isaksson was brought into the band as the new bassist. After a few months break, the band got an offer from the famous metal label Nuclear Blast in Germany. Despite the record deal, Megarock Records decided to let Therion go without any strings attached. This hardly ever happens in the music industry, and it shows the good relationship the band had with the label, they just lacked the resources to promote such a promising band. The band signed a deal with Nuclear Blast in 1994 and remain with them to this day.
In order to scale down operations, Active Records had stopped releasing new records and transferred the band to Megarock Records. They released Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas in 1993. Its style combined death metal and doom metal, with elements of Middle Eastern music, industrial music, traditional 1980s heavy metal, classical music and religious chanting. Symphony Masses sold about 10,000 copies, which was more than the band's first two albums, but hardly a financial success. As the band's touring gigs were not that profitable, Barthelsson and Wahl quit the band, and Fredrik Isaksson was brought in as the new bassist. After a hiatus where Johnsson worked as a vocalist for Messiah, they received an offer to join metal label Nuclear Blast. Megarock Records, lacking the resources to properly promote the band, decided to release Therion without any strings attached. Therion signed with Nuclear Blast in 1994, and has remained with them since.

Symphonic metal beginning (1996–2001)
Naturally the sales were not good. Johnsson had several songs already written that he simply did not have the budget to realise. Johnsson had grown tired of heavy guitar based music and wanted to experiment even more so. But naturally bands that did not sell well did not get the big budgets. However, Johnsson was determined. He called the chief of Nuclear Blast, Markus Steiger, and said ”No more albums based on my vocals. And I need two choirs, a better recording studio, two producers and more time in the studio - if not I'd rather give up the band and stay happy with what I've achieved so far”. Johnsson was frustrated at the lack of live shows the band was given, because without live shows, the fans would not see the band, and sales would not increase. Luckily for Therion, Steiger was a dedicated fan and music lover. He agreed to help get the band what they needed to complete their next record. Jonas Mellberg was added to the lineup, and Therion went on to record their most experimental album yet.

In 1996, Therion recorded their experimental album Theli. The album heavily featured the vocals of two choirs, as well as vocals from Johnsson, Wawrzeniuk and guest vocalist Dan Swanö. The album featured keyboards and classic samples, which was labeled the "Barmbek Symphony Orchestra" after the subway station next to the studio. Jason Ankeny of Allmusic noted that the album "was almost universally acclaimed as the apex of Therion's career to date, fully realizing Johnsson's taste for elaborate, operatic grandeur". In a month, the album sold 75,000, more than double that of Lepaca Kliffoth.

Personal issues plagued the band's members. Jonas Mellberg, who had joined as a guitarist from Unanimated, had severe alcohol problems, and walked out during the mixing and mastering sessions. Wawrzeniuk was busy with his studies, so Johnsson brought in more members for their tours, including Tommy Eriksson of Shadowseeds. Rosenberg's drinking problems got worse and he was fired from the band.
Metal and symphony era (1996-present)
The result was entitled Theli. Recorded at the Impuls Studio in Hamburg, it was a totally new direction for the band. Johnsson considered this his masterpiece, and also his final recording, believing it to be far too experimental for the metal fans to accept. Wawrzeniuk was a little more optimistic, but nevertheless began to study a history degree at university. The album heavily featured the vocals of two choirs, along with some vocals from Johnsson and Wawrzeniuk. Dan Swanö also contributed to the vocals on this album. The band used keyboards heavily, so many in fact that it was humourously called ”Barmbek Symphony Orchestra” after the subway station next to the studio, Barmbek being a somewhat dilapidated area.

In 1997, Therion released A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming, which contained unreleased songs from Theli, some covers, and Johnsson's soundtrack that he produced for a short art movie called The Golden Embrace.
After recording was over, the mixing and mastering period became stressful. Mellberg was had severe alcohol problems and literally walked out of the studio, never to return to the band. Rosenberg was also having problems with alcohol, but the band survived these problems long enough to release Theli.

Johnsson noted that the next album, Vovin, was practically a solo album as it used studio musicians instead of the ones from the Theli tour, besides Eriksson, who provided some guitar support. Vovin was recorded at Woodhouse Studios; it involved a real string orchestra for the first time, and a "hand picked opera choir" which included Austrian singer Martina Hornbacher, and British vocalist Sarah Jezebel Deva. The album was released in 1998, and in two months, sales had reached 150,000 in Europe alone, doubling sales of Theli.
The release was just as troubled as the recording. A single entitled Siren Of The Woods was released beforehand to promote the new record, but an error was made in the initial pressing of the album. Due to a mixup, The first few Theli releases did not actually contain any Therion material, but instead had music by a German choir singing Christmas carols. The mistake was spotted quickly and the copies recalled, and they are now very collectible among Therion fans.

The band toured with Moonspell and showcased Hornbacher and Deva on vocals. It brought in Sami Karppinen as the drummer, Kristian Niemann on guitar, and his brother Johan Niemann on bass. The album Crowning of Atlantis, released in 1999, was a mini-album that was padded to full-length with covers and live tracks.
The record's success surprised everyone. The sales were more than double of Lepaca Kliffoth and the band was offered to go on tour with the popular band Amorphis. Despite the good fortune the band now had, Johnsson was worried about touring, the songs were so elaborate, it would be very difficult to play them live. Choirs were expensive to hire for recording sessions let alone tours. Johnsson had little money to pay for the tour. Nuclear Blast had paid out 56,000 marks (around €28,000) to fund the recording of Theli, so Johnsson was conscious not to ask them for even more to fund a full tour. Through several contacts, Johnsson managed to group together a few amateur performers to sing on the tour, it was not perfect, but it had to do.

The band's next release, Deggial, involved the participation of a full orchestra. Johnsson noted it was 90% another solo album, but with a more permanent band lineup. Deggial sold more copies than Theli but not as many as Vovin.
Johnsson also had a problem with the band members; Wawrzeniuk was busy with his studies and could not go on tour so Johnsson got a friend of his, Tommy Eriksson (Best known for the musical project Shadowseed), to fill in on drums. Tobias Sidegard (Now singer/guitarist in death metal band Necrophobic) was hired to play guitar, while Kimberly Goss (Later in Dimmu Borgir and now in Sinergy) was hired as a keyboard player and vocalist. The tour was a big success, despite Johnsson commenting that ”The band sounded like shit!”. With money being very tight at the time, Johnsson made sure everyone got their rents paid for the month, with a little extra on top.

Secret of the Runes (2001–2002)
The tour however, had many problems. Rosenberg's drinking problems got worse, resulting in him collapsing on stage and seriously hindering his musical abilities. The choir had problems adapting to the lifestyle of touring and the lead soprano began taking drugs. Johnsson did not take kindly to this behaviour and promptly fired Rosenberg from the band and the choir singers were never used again. A second tour was planned, with Wawrzeniuk as a tenor and two professional sopranos. The tour took place in 1997 and was very successful. It was that year that the band celebrated their tenth anniversary with the A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming release. The record contained a few unused songs from Theli, a few cover songs the band had made, plus a full soundtrack Johnsson had made independently for the film called ”The Golden Embrace”.

Johnsson had written seven songs but shelved them in order to make a Nordic concept album. He built a recording studio for the band called "Modern Art". The band's tenth album, Secret of the Runes, was released in 2001, and had themes from the nine worlds of Norse mythology. It included the cover songs of "Crying Days" (Scorpions) and "Summer Night City" (ABBA), of which, Piotr Wawrzeniuk provided vocals. The album received positive reviews, and was an Allmusic editors' pick. Therion headlined tours in Europe and Latin America with Evergrey and My Insanity. Afterwards, Karppinen left the band to focus as a sound engineer for Modern Art, but brought in replacement drummer Richard Evensand.
The tour increased album sales, with Therion becoming well known and popular within the metal community. Nuclear Blast now promised bigger budgets for the band in recognition of their recent success. But the problem was that the "band" was essentially Johnsson and the tour musicians. He realised that they would never be up to the standards he had in mind for his next recording.

In 2001, Therion released the compilation album Bells of Doom to its official fan club. It includes recordings from the Blitzkrieg days in 1987, demos from 1989 that did not appear on any album, and an unofficial promotional demo from 1994 that enabled the band to land the record deal with Nuclear Blast. The album was later sold through Therion's webstore.
After Deggial, Johnsson began to compose again. He had many new ideas that he wanted to explore. But after writing seven songs, he got a sudden urge to take to a new direction. Johnsson felt strongly about making an album based on the Nordic and Pagan religions of old. So the songs he had already composed were put aside for the time being, and using folk influences, he began to write his Nordic concept album. Johnsson had already written two of the songs earlier and they were not intended for the project, but for a project with the Skyclad singer that never happened. He then played those songs (in demo versions) to the Niemann brothers and they told him They're too good - you cannot waste this on some other project, you must use them with Therion. And shortly after that Johnnson had this idea to make a Nordic concept album. The remaining songs were based on the nine worlds of the ancient Nordic Mythology, this album would be named Secret of the Runes and was released in 2001.

Therion released their first DVD set, Celebrators of Becoming, in May 2006. The set contains four DVDs which include concert footage from its 2004 visit to Mexico City, documentaries of its 2004–2006 World Tour, Johnsson's art movie The Golden Embrace, the band's music video singles, bootlegs and commentaries, and two audio CDs from its Mexico City concert.
Johnsson decided to take most of the budget for this album and build Therion's own recording studio. Named "Modern Art" it was built so Therion no longer had to worry about timing and rent of other studios. Karppinen was the brains behind the construction, planning and actually building the majority of the studio. The Secret of the Runes album was recorded here, with Karppinen as sound engineer as well as drummer. Johnsson also personally instructed each musician involved with the recording, as opposed to using a conductor.

Gothic Kabbalah, live classical shows and the 20th Anniversary Tour (2006–2007)
Therion were finally a band again with this record, with Kristian Niemann helping out on some composition and the arrangements being organised and discussed as a band. Through their contacts as a group, they were able to get the best musicians to perform on this record. Again the reviews were mixed, being the most complex and majestic music Therion had ever written. It was not metal, yet it was not classical, but a hybrid. This appealed to many people, but also equally scared off several others. Therion followed this up with a tour with Evergrey and My Insanity as support acts. After this tour, Karppinen decided to leave the band to work full time in the Modern Art studio. This was indeed a blow to the band, but Karppinen was responsible enough to find a good replacement drummer for the band - Richard Evensand.

In September 2006, Johnsson announced that recording was completed for a new album with 9 songs written by then drummer, Petter Karlsson. Gothic Kabbalah was released on 12 January 2007, and was followed with a tour through Europe, North and South America with Grave Digger and with support act Sabaton. Therion also toured Japan for the first time. Johan Koleberg became the new drummer, and Nalle Påhlsson the bassist. The band did not tour that year, except for a single open-air festival show in Płock, Poland on 6 September.

As for the future of Therion, there may be plans to release the third album from the Sirius B/Lemuria trilogy.

On 10 May 2009, following the release of The Miskolc Experience, Therion announced Thomas Vikström as its new lead vocalist.

In 2015 Johnsson worked on another side project, called Luciferian Light Orchestra, which features songs in the '70s occult rock style. An eponymous album was also released in that year, accompanied by on-stage appearances as support of Therion's 2015 Latin American and 2016 European tours, featuring Vidal and Påhlsson (both of them masked) on guitar. In addition to the last two tours, Therion had the very first acoustic gigs in Latin America and on 3 July 2016 in Bucharest.

On 26 January, Johnsson revealed he had been suffering from intense pain in the neck and shoulders, and he was diagnosed with two spinal disc herniations (allegedly resulting from years of headbanging), and he was at risk of losing the ability to perform live. As a result, the rock opera project was delayed and the band downplayed their sets of songs in concerts to allow Johnsson to perform. By 8 April, Johnsson announced he had been able to avoid surgery as his condition had improved through physiotherapy, and the band would resume performing at festivals by August.

Johnsson also arranged the orchestration of Sabaton's stage show with symphonic orchestra, performed on 13 July 2017 at the Masters Of Rock festival in Vizovice, Czech Republic.

On 15 August 2017, the band announced the title and the release date of an operatic rock musical. Beloved Antichrist – inspired by and partly based on Vladimir Solovyov's Tale of the Antichrist – containing over 3 hours of music, and 29 vocal characters was scheduled for 26 January 2018, later postponed first to 2 February and finally to 9 February.

In 2018 a European and a Latin American tour was scheduled, later also extended for China, and – for the very first time – Australia. After the last show of the tour, Linnéa Vikström ended the collaboration with the band and was replaced by the new touring member Rosalía Sairem.

On 10 August 2019 Nalle Påhlsson has decided to withdraw from touring, and remain only a member for songwriting and studio recordings. For the year's only remaining show Justin Biggs from the band Sorcerer was standing in.

The Leviathan trilogy (2020–present)
The first Leviathan album was released on 22 January 2021, partly with Snowy Shaw on drums. A sequel, titled Leviathan II, was released on 26 October 2022.

The 2022 festival shows of the band featured again Johan Koleberg on drums, as Sami Karppinen took over the duties on Opeth's concerts after the leaving of Martin Axenrot. For the end of the year a European tour was scheduled, but cancelled due to problems with their booking agent and also stating increased costs of touring contributing to the decision. Instead of it only four shows were played in Malta, Greece and Turkey in January 2023, subsequently followed by a long Latin-American tour, which included 18 shows in Mexico.

After more than 30 years at Nuclear Blast the band has signed on 27 April 2023 to Napalm Records. The third and final installment album, Leviathan III, was released already by the new label on 15 December 2023.

The conclusion of the trilogy was followed up by a tour through Europe and China in February and March 2024. As Chiara Malvestiti became unable to stand on stage due to her pregnancy and childbirth the year before, Lori Lewis returned as a touring singer too. The tour was preceded by the band's third show with orchestra and choir in Mexico City on 20 January 2024, which didn't feature any covers, and deviated only slightly from the tour's setlist. The second leg of the tour went through Turkey and Latin America in Autumn 2024.

Influences
Therion draws its influences from several different bands. The name comes from Celtic Frost's 1985 album To Mega Therion and much of its music prior to Theli was inspired by the 1987 album Into the Pandemonium. For Theli, the band drew from Pink Floyd's album Atom Heart Mother and progressive rock group Klaatu's album Hope.

From Vovin onwards, the band has drawn inspiration from classical composers like Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, heavy metal acts from the 1980s like Iron Maiden, Accept, 1970s hard rock bands such as Scorpions, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, and "tons of progressive '70s bands that nobody knows anymore these days".

Symbols
The symbols on Therion's album covers originate from magick and occult themes. The most common symbol is an {11:5} hendecagram, an eleven-pointed star. First appearing on the 1993 album Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas, and most album since, it symbolizes the night side of the Qabalah.

Other symbols include:
* Pythagorean pentagram (one point down), on the dragon's head, for the cover of Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas.
* Nordic runes with Elder Fuþark alphabet, on the front cover and the booklet for the album Secret of the Runes.
* Celtic cross, on the booklet's page for "Helheim" on the album Secret of the Runes.
* Clavicula Nox, a key symbol in Dragon Rouge and also the title of one of the band's tracks, on the covers of Crowning of Atlantis, Vovin (inlay), and "Eye of Shiva".
* Mjölnir, the Hammer of Thor, on the inlay cover of Secret of the Runes.
* The astronomical symbols Venus <big>(♀)</big>, moon <big>(☽)</big>, and sun <big>(☉)</big>, on the covers for The Early Chapters of Revelation box-set.
