Si pensa che siano presenti solo nelle zone naturalmente glabre del [[derma]] (dorso della [[mano]], pianta del [[Piede (anatomia)|piede]], [[labbro|labbra]], [[piccole labbra]] e [[glande]]), e nell'[[ipoderma]] umano. Il nome deriva dal medico italiano [[Angelo Ruffini]].
