The members of this genus are large (25–70&nbsp;mm) and usually brown or black.

'''Prionus''' is a genus of [[beetle]]s, more specifically a type of [[Cerambycidae]] (Longhorned beetles). They are large (25-70 mm) and usually brown or black. The males sport large [[mandible|pincer]]s that are most likely used in fights with other (often larger) creatures. These beetles are [[nocturnal]] and are attracted to light. They are borers whose [[larvae]] feed on rotting wood or roots. All members of the genus Prionus have twelve or more [[antennomere]]s on their large [[antenna (biology)|antennae]]. Common species include the [[California Root Borer]] and the [[Broad-necked Root borer]].

All members of the genus ''Prionus'' have twelve or more strongly toothed or even flabellate [[antennomere]]s on their large [[antenna (biology)|antennae]].
