is a character in the Soulcalibur series of video games. Created by Namco's Project Soul division by designers Aya Takemura and Takuji Kawano, she first appeared in Soul Edge and its subsequent sequels, later appearing in various merchandise related to the series. A baker turned warrior from Athens fighting with a Xiphos and shield, Sophitia became involved in the search for the cursed sword Soul Edge at the behest of the god Hephaestus. The affair soon affected her other family members as well, including her sister, Cassandra, and later her children, Pyrrha and Patroklos.

Originally voiced by Michiko Neya, Sophitia's designs focused heavily on her beauty typically with outfits reflecting Greek themes, however the emphasis on making her beautiful led to the development team trying to find a balance between a "sacred" and "vulgar" appearance for her character. In later entries in the series she has been one of the first characters to be implemented into the game, and served as a benchmark for other later characters to test against as they were implemented. While her gameplay has evoked mixed reactions, the character herself has received positive reception. While her beauty was often praised by the media, she has also commonly been cited in scholarly literature as an example of oversexualization in video game women.
Sophitia Alexandra is a fictional character designed for the Soul Series of fighting games. Sophitia made her first appearance in Soul Edge and has returned for Soul Calibur, console ports of Soul Calibur II, and Soul Calibur III.

Biography
As a character introduced in Soul Edge, Sophitia's weaponry, a Xiphos (greek shortsword) and shield combination designed to be unique amongst the other weapons in the game, were selected before other elements of the character. Her design and concept were then built to revolve around it by designers Aya Takemura and Takuji Kawano, starting with gender, then physical measurements, and lastly background details. As with all the characters, after her appearance and movement were fleshed out by a concept artist, her character was rendered as a 3D model by a design team that worked solely on her, and then animated by Tomoe Yamashita using motion capture to create her in-game movements. Yamashita, who additionally created the "struck" movements for many other characters in the game, noted particular fondness for Sophitia while designing her.
The Greek daughter of a baker, Sophitia worked at her family bakery. She had always treasured her country's culture and prayed often to the city guardian, Athena, the goddess of wisdom. One day, as she bathed in a forest spring, a bright light appeared and took the shape of a man. He revealed to her that he was the Olympian god of fire and forge, Hephaestus, and told her of the evil blade Soul Edge--that the existence of such a powerful blade would put shame to his name, as he had not created it, and that if anyone were to discover it, it would bring much pain to the world. Hephaestus ordered her to come to the Eurydice Shrine and receive a holy weapon, the Omega Sword, so that she could destroy the Soul Edge. Upon gaining her equipment, she ventured forward. Sophitia did eventually track down the Soul Edge in a port in Valencia, Spain; and she fought its possessor, the dread pirate Cervantes de Leon, destroying one of the twin blades. However, a shard of the evil sword flew with great force from her powerful blow, causing a cut deep into her womb, which wounded her too greatly to finish the fight. Just as Cervantes was about to deliver a finishing blow to the endangered Sophitia, a mysterious female ninja, Taki, saved her and proceeded to kill the evil pirate. After the battle had finished, Taki carried Sophitia on her back to her home in Athens, where her sister, Cassandra, had been waiting for her. Cassandra was the only member of her family or group of friends to believe her story at the time. While recovering from her wounds, she was also taken care of by a local blacksmith named Rothion. The two eventually fell in love.

During her creation, designers focused on maintaining an innocent appearance for her face, to give the character a sense of feeling fresh and young. Freedom of movement between the sword and shield were emphasized, with the intention to allow for the blade to rotate around the shield for cyclonic attacks. The character concept would later be revisited in Soulcalibur IV, appearing as an ally character in Sophitia's story mode and using her fighting style. While developing Soulcalibur VI, Sophitia and Mitsurugi have been the first characters to be created and then used "as a foundation" for the decisions regarding the other characters' based on how well they would fit alongside the pair, and further described her gameplay as representative of Soulcalibur as a whole. Sophitia stands at 168&nbsp;cm (5&nbsp;ft 6 in) tall, and has a bust size of 90&nbsp;cm (35&nbsp;in).
Three years later, she had returned to her life as a baker's daughter, spending her days without a sword or shield and entertaining her eventual marriage to her betrothed, Rothion. However, one night, she had had an ominous vision of a knight in azure-colored armor and a second sword of immense evil--a sword she knew that had to be the real Soul Edge. Following this dream, she received a second oracle from Hephaestus to destroy the remaining Soul Edge, who then supplied her with holy metal, which Rothion used to forge a new Omega Sword and shield; she set out on a second journey to destroy the Soul Edge. On this second journey, Sophitia learned that another had destroyed the Soul Edge, Chai Xianghua, and she immediately ended her travels to return to her home as quickly as possible, where she soon married Rothion and gave birth to both a son and a daughter. But a strange shard that Rothion had received from a mysterious customer four years later brought a halt to her newfound happiness. Upon bringing the metal fragment home, their two children, Patroklos and Pyrrha, scrambled to fight violently with each other over the artifact. The evil aura the fragment emanated caused Sophitia's old wounds to ache, as they had been undoubtedly infected with the evil energy of the Soul Edge seven years previous, explaining her children's predilection for the bizarre aura. Cassandra had seen Sophitia's distraught expression and proceeded to grab the shard from her grasp and run out the door, running away from home soon afterwards. A couple of weeks later, Sophitia decided that if she was to free her children from the evil sword's curse on her womb and ensure her sister's safety, she had to embark on a third journey. But because Cassandra had stolen Sophitia's previous weapons, which she had stored at Eurydice Shrine, Rothion forged her a new set, blessed by the god Hephaestus, to destroy the cursed Soul Edge once and for all.

Designed with a Greek holy warrior motif in mind, Sophitia is a blonde woman dressed in a white and brown frock, with boots extending up her thighs and armor plating on her shoulders and chest. As the series progressed, more of her skin became exposed and armor removed, with her outfit taking on a primarily blue appearance starting in Soulcalibur and then completely white by Soulcalibur III. When asked in an interview if changes to her character design focused primarily on sex appeal for the benefit of a male audience, former series producer Motohiro Okubo responded "We weren’t necessarily going out to try and intentionally make something sexy for the purpose of being sexy." However in the artbook Legend of Soulcalibur, the design team noted the changes to her outfit in Soulcalibur to expose more of her breasts was done "for male fans", with an additional note expressing disdain for the change. In the same book, another design proposal for the game was noted to draw attention to the area of "her belt to the thick peach", the latter being a euphemism for a woman's behind. Developer notes instructed the team to find a balance between "sacred" and "vulgar" in response to their proposals.
Her journey took her to Ostrheinsburg Castle, which was blanketed by a thick fog. From the fog emerged a small girl in green clothing with a large ring-like blade (Tira). Tira casually told Sophitia that Soul Edge wasn't in the castle and she also told her that she wanted to play with her children with a smile that was neither gentle nor heartwarming. Sophitia lunged at Tira, but she easily dodged her, and disappeared into the fog. Sophitia quickly returned home and was relieved to see that her family was safe, but she was unsure whether or not to continue her search for Soul Edge. She went to the Eurydice Shrine to pray to Hephaestus for guidance, where Tira was waiting for her.

Sophitia has also had a variety of alternative outfits. One considered for Soul Edge was an outfit was designed to have black hair and an asymmetrical appearance meant to give the impression it went through multiple battles. Dubbed "Azola", this outfit went unused as the development team felt it fit more a goddess of war aesthetic than the neat and clean appearance they planned for Sophitia. Meanwhile, for the PlayStation version of station, an outfit consisting of a plaid skirt, blue jacket with cleavage, red scarf, and a jeweled ornate pill box hat was added. Unlike her other designs, this was not done by the development team but was instead a contest submission for a Japanese PlayStation-themed magazine, and according to the fan book was intended to display an "India" cultural theme. Alternative designs for Sophitia were also added as full unlockable variants in Soul Edge: "Sophitia!", which featured a more revealing constume, and "Sophitia!!", who fought in a one-piece swimsuit. Both were otherwise identical to the original character, with a developer comment in the official fan book for Soul Edge stating they "may not be able to do this again" in regards to the swimsuit.
As they fought, Sophitia noticed an emotion for Tira other than madness. Sophitia realized that the girl had never felt happiness. With a look of hatred in her eyes, an irritated Tira simply pushed Sophitia away and left, saying she would come for her children when she needed them. Sophitia then made up her mind--to destroy Soul Edge for the sake of her children. Asking her husband to keep their children safe, Sophitia left to continue her search for the cursed sword.

Sophitia was introduced in the 1996 video game Soul Edge as a simple baker from Athens, Greece ordered by the Greek god Hephaestus to destroy a parasitic living sword, Soul Edge, which had manifested as a pair of twin blades. Though she destroyed one of them, shards from its destruction wounded her, leaving one piece embedded near her heart. After recovering, she led a quiet life until years later she was tasked once more to destroy a restored Soul Edge and its new host, Nightmare. Unable to locate it before its destruction, she returned home to her husband and gave birth to a daughter, Pyrrha, and later a son, Patroklos. Years later the blade attempted to reform again and Sophitia set again, followed closely by her sister Cassandra. She encountered the warrior Tira who threatened her children, and due to Tira's machinations, Pyrrha is left in a state where she would not survive if the sword were destroyed, leaving Sophitia forced to protect it for the sake of her daughter. When the blade was ultimately destroyed again, Sophitia used the fragment near her heart to save her daughter, sacrificing herself in the process.

She has since has appeared in almost every entry in the Soulcalibur series, with the exception being Soulcalibur V and the arcade release of Soulcalibur II, but included in home ports of the latter due to fan outcry. Originally voiced by Michiko Neya in Japanese, though Chie Nakamura has taken over voice acting duties since Soulcalibur Legends. A set of holy weapons given to Sophitia by Hephaestus, the greek god of forge. These implements of battle were made by Hephaestus himself using a sacred ore, and had divine propieties. Both shield and sword suffered heavy damage during the battle with Captain Cervantes, and after his defeat both weapons were retrieved by Hephaestus.

Fighting with a short sword and shield, Sophitia was designed as a character intended to be used by both long-time and brand new players. Her moveset provides her a large amount of flexibility, allowing her to act as a close to mid-range fighter. To this end several of her attacks will launch an opponent into the air and then juggle them for additional hits. However, as a slower character in the series many of her attacks can be sidestepped by the opponent, relying on her to either goad attacks or counterattack in order to be effective. Several of her attacks serve multiple purposes such as hitting low before following up with an airborne slash, while others have more range than their appearance would suggest. Due to her deceptive elements, she has been described as a technical character often favored by experienced players.

The new set of sword and shield given to Sophitia to embark in her second quest. This time the one who made this set was Rothion, Sophitia's beloved soon-to-be husband. Hephaestus gave Rothion holy ore which he would work to made both weapons. After Sophitia returned from her second quest, the weapons were put on an altar. And 4 years later Cassandra stole the Omega Sword. When Sophitia embarked on her third and fourth quest, the weapons she uses were duplicates made by Rothion.

Other publications voiced similar sentiments. John Warren of Fanbyte noted that while Sophitia’s visual design wasn't unique, describing it as "every bit the classical warrior maiden", compared to the "bulky European armor and eastern fight-wear" of other characters in the series, she stood out visually and in regards to her gameplay. Jakub Kralka of benchmark.pl also heavily praised her, noting her popularity amongst other gaming websites and adding that she "to this day occupies high places in the rankings of the most alluring video game heroines", and further felt her movements coupled with her design made her a standout character in fighting games as a whole. Meanwhile, Princess Weekees of The Mary Sue praised Sophitia as an undervalued character in the franchise, stating that while she was attractive her backstory as a "baker turned warrior mom" is what made her attached to her the most, comparing her to the character Gabriella from the television series Xena: Warrior Princess "but sadly more heterosexual."
An shrine for the gods constructed by Hephaestus, the greek god of forge and smithery. This giant palace once layed on ruins, but thanks to Sophitia's faith it restored its former glory. Sophitia received here the sacred weapons and the oracle to destroy the evil Soul Edge.

However, others were more critical of her design. The 2004 book Race, Gender, Media: Considering Diversity Across Audiences, Content, and Producers described Sophitia as oversexualized, with her outfit being the "micro mini version of the St. Pauli Girl frock", and further felt Sophitia was designed for solely the viewing pleasure heterosexual boys and men. In the paper Pretty Good for a Girl: A Feminist Content Analysis of Female Video Game Characters, and Interviews with Female Gamers, Elizabeth Munday stated Sophitia showed that the "real-world logic of protecting yourself during a fight was missing from the female character designs" in Soulcalibur, further noting that her outfit coupled with her large breasts and exposed thighs contributed to "an almost untouchable allure to the character", and emphasized the contrast between male and female characters in the series. Game designer Celia Pearce cited her among other characters as an example of "kombat lingerie", claiming her attire was more about the male fantasy of watching women in battle instead of female empowerment.

The changes to Sophitia's appearance throughout the series have also been discussed. Journalist Paul Tassi in an article for Topless Robot criticized the progressive changes, particularly in how her bust appeared to increase in size while her clothes became more revealing, stating while he was not opposed to attractive female characters, "there is a line that crosses into pure ridiculousness, and fighting games [...] regularly step over it". University of Delaware professor Rachel Hutchinson described Sophitia as the developer's "ideal figure of the western woman", noting as the series progresses she her hair gradually becomes more blonde and her outfit incorporates more blue, suggesting the blonde hair/blue eyes combination as a trait associated with Western character. She also noted Sophitia's designs growing more intricate as the series progressed, calling them "far from practical, focusing on the beauty and sexuality of the image and the grace of the character's movement", and tying into the increased mythical nature of the games.
The gods constructed a circular shrine atop a great sacred mountain.
Legends say the gods created this shrine to defy themselves. As if to prove
this legend the path to the shrine was a cascade of giant stairs that human
feet could never step upon. "If the gods do not wish us to enter the shrine
of legend then we shall construct a second shrine for them to come to us."
Therefore, this second shrine stood next to the mountain. All who
visited the shrine surrounded by clouds and divine light felt as if they
were floating in air. What could have been the hopes and bows of people
standing on this shrine looking at the circular shrine of legend in the
distance? And of Sophitia...

Reflist

This shrine is built high up a snow-covered mountain that is as
beautiful as it is harsh. The scale of this temple is such that it is easy
to believe that Olympian gods once dwelled in this place.
Legends say Hephaestus, the God of fire and forge, built the main
shrine on top of the summit. This is evidenced by the stairway that leads up
to the shrine - the enormous steps are impossible for mortals to climb.
Humans built this gallery around the giant stairway for their priests' use.
In one corner of this meticulously built gallery is the place where a
blacksmith couple gave an offering of a sword and a shield to Hephaestus.
The arms have disappeared from the altar, however. Who could have
taken them? <br> (Note: Sophitia shared this stage with Cassandra)

-- <b>Eurydice Temple - Gate of the Gods</b> (SC3)

The gods of Olympus are long forgotten and no longer worshipped. But a number
of phenomena confirm that they once existed. This temple in the clouds is one
of them. This circular temple, said to have been constructed by the god of the
forge, Hephaestus himself, stands at the peak of a mountain. Around the sides
of the mountain spirals a giant stairway.
People constructed a corridor for human use beside the stairway of the gods,
for those who came to worship at the mountain peak. In front of the base of the
stairs stands a temple marking the entrance to that corridor. It has been a
great long time since this temple was constructed to call the gods to this
place, but even those who visit it now will surely be awestruck by its beauty.

Character Analysis
Sophitia (along with her sister Cassandra) is an excellent pressure character due to her crouch dash (CD) stance. Sophie, as she is called in Soul Calibur circles, has the unique ability to double crouch dash (DCD), giving her the ability to even duck under certain "mids". Her central attack during CD/DCD is Angel's Strike (a.k.a. 236B), a quick linear thrust that serves as arguably the best punisher in the game. When Angel's Strike is followed by the appropriate "just frame" input, no other move in the game hits faster while doing more damage. If blocked or stepped, Angel Strike is easily punished, leaving it best reserved for when a successful hit is guaranteed.

Sophie's tier ranking in Soul Calibur II is a good example of how a character can develop when more is discovered about the game. At first it was commonly said that her moves were too linear to be effective in a 3D environment that emphasized stepping. Due to her absence from the arcade version, she was not a widely used character early on. As the game aged through the console versions, her emphasis as a punisher and pressure character evolved, and now she is regarded as at least upper-mid tier.

However, in Soul Calibur III she has been given such a boost that Namco felt a need to tone her down in the PAL version. Regardless, she still remains a top-tier character in both the NTSC and PAL versions.
