Description
Odd is, well, odd (hence the name). He is 13 years old, 4.69' tall (likely including his hair), and weighs 70.5 pounds. One of the things that definitely lends a helping hand when giving Odd the title of the "weird guy" is his passion for the color purple. In reality he wears it from head to toe quite literally. He has a purple stripe in the front of his long, spikey, blond hair (that, surprisingly, is an actual part of his hair as seen in both "Unchartered Territory" and "Revelation" when his hair gets wet), and wears a purple shirt with purple bellbottom-ish pants. He also wears gold shoes and a gold belt that matches the color of his hair. However, his night clothes are red and orange, instead of purple. The shirt does have a picture of Kiwi on it, though. Upon close inspection of the picture, it shows Kiwi urinating. Odd often draws a similar picture in class when he should be paying attention. In "Cold War", he wears a light blue winter outfit, complete with a scarf and yellow earmuffs. Odd also has a very weird, yet goofy, grin.
Odd's Lyoko attire is fashioned after a cat (despite him having a dog as a pet), with a purple tail and claws to match the rest of his outfit. Despite the feline-like features on his suit, there's a picture of Kiwi on his chest - the same one seen on his night shirt. In addition, on the cuffs of his gauntlet sleeves (on the upper arm), there are small outlines of animal faces. A closer inspection will reveal that one has an outline of a stereotypical cat face (large, narrow eyes on a small face with whiskers) and the other has an outline of Kiwi's face. The faces will appear on different arms in different episodes. His ID card has a paw print on the back.
Discussion
Odd is the comic relief of Team Lyoko. He makes constant jokes, one of which is responding to the statement "say something" by literally saying "something," and prefers to work on music, film, drawing, and other art, or to make jibes at Sissi and her friends, rather than study for his classes. One instance of this is when he folds his test into a lovely origami crane, possibly through earlier tutelage from Yumi. When called into action in Lyoko, however, he can be a very valiant and powerful warrior. Of the three primary Lyokons, he seems to be the most enthusiastic and energetic, being the one whose been to Lyoko most often and seems to get sincere enjoyment from putting his life on the line there. In the first episode, "Teddygozilla", he jumped at the opportunity to head to Lyoko after hearing it would be a solo mission and of great danger.
Odd has managed to go out with nearly every girl in the eighth grade, and, at times, even two at once. He's also dated at least one girl from a different school. In the first episode, he even took Yumi to the prom. Ulrich, in turn, took Milly to the prom. The last one was the result of a team effort to make Sissi look foolish for making fun of Milly's inability to get a date. He doesn't yet have anyone who could be considered a steady girlfriend, though. Although he supposedly dates many girls on a consistent basis, he is never shown with any of them, though he does kiss Samantha in the first season episode "Rock Bottom".
His behavior in this regard backfires on him by the end of the second season. Because of the sheer amount of women he's dated, his reputation has gotten around and his social life takes a nosedive, as seen in the episode "The Key". Most of the girls won't even talk to him and those that will usually stop after finding out who he is.
Despite his apparent popularity drop, a future romantic relation with Sissi has been hinted at several times, especially now that her attitude has softened up a bit. In the episode "Déja Vu", Odd became interested in a girl he met on the Internet. Eventually, he decided to meet her. In a surprising twist, it turned out to be Sissi. While Odd does eventually learn this, Sissi never learns that Odd was the one she had been talking to. Later episodes also have some minor hints towards the relationship, though it has never been followed up on.
He has a pet dog named Kiwi, who is most likely a Bull Terrier. Next to the rest of Team Lyoko, Kiwi is Odd's best friend, possibly given to him by his parents when he was a little boy. The dog hides in his room at school during classes because of a rule at Kadic that prohibits having animals on campus. The rule may change, but, at the current stage of writing, it seems that the rule conflict will probably be ignored. Despite the rule, most, if not all, of the students know Odd has the dog. It would seem that only the teachers are unaware of Kiwi's existence. Jim seems to know (or suspects) that the dog exists, but has never been able to prove it without a time reversion taking place.
Odd is best friend and room mate to Ulrich, though he is also friends with the rest of Team Lyoko. Ulrich just happens to be the one he rooms with. The others have their own rooms or live at home. This occasionally results in arguments between the two on roommate-related issues.
Odd has a love of food from the cafeteria, usually liking to point out the cafeteria's menu for the day before and after missions. Because of this, he has a reputation among his friends and some of the faculty for being a heavy eater, many times dining on his friends' leftover portions. Various characters have pointed out his unusual stomach capacity through creative comparisons. Such comparisons are "eats as much as an elephant," "is a walking stomach," "is like a cow," and "has five stomachs." Despite this, Odd retains his small stature, making him the shortest member of Team Lyoko. This is due in part to his high metabolism. As a running gag, many characters call him "scrawny" because of this, much to his displeasure and slight anger. He prefers to be called "svelte," which is French for "slender."
Odd's constant overeating seems to give him much more energy than the others when it comes to fighting in Lyoko. In the episode "Laughing Fit", he manages to press on for some time despite his energy being drained from him by the gas that was sent with him to Lyoko. A similar event happened in "Tip-Top Shape" with a ghost that Jeremie had created to give Odd superpowers. XANA took control of the ghost and used it to drain Odd's energy (which was referred to as "pumping out" by Jeremie). Odd managed to stay nimble for a while before collapsing.
Odd suffers from motion sickness, as shown whenever he enters Carthage via a Transport Orb. He often complains of a stomach ache or nausea as soon as he enters the arena. Oddly enough, he does not get sick in the final episode of the second season, "The Key". This is perhaps similar to when someone gets a bad feeling in their stomach right before something bad happens, but reversed because he is usually made sick upon entering the arena. He also avoided the nausea in the episodes "A Fine Mess" and "Franz Hopper", but this was because he was in Yumi's body and sent there directly, respectively.
Odd's last name is derived from the Italian family of the della Robbia, a Florentine family of sculptors and ceramists active from the 15th to the 16th century. The most well-known of the family's members is Luca della Robbia, an important Italian Early Renaissance Sculptor, who lived from 1400 until 1482. With Odd's interests in drawing, music, and the arts, this is obviously no coincidence. Odd is a capable guitarist, as seen in "Laughing Fit". He also is a good singer. Odd's parents are also artists. Odd's first name, however, is Norwegian. His name translates from Norwegian as "point of a sword," which is fitting since he has a somewhat-militant attitude once there's a XANA alert. The name "dellarobbia" is also the name used to describe a kind of art using ribbons. This has lead to much speculation about the nationalities (and physical appearances, seeing as how they haven't appeared) of his mother and father. He also knows Italian, as well as Japanese and Chinese.
Skills
Odd is a capable athlete, as stated by the school nurse, Yolande Perraudin. He has competed in skateboarding and rock climbing competitions, as well as a few friendly games with Ulrich and other students. He also is a capable fighter, though not in quite the same way as Ulrich or Yumi. His skills tend to lean more towards various types of street fighting. This is hinted at in the second season episode "Franz Hopper" when Odd gets into a boxing match with one of the Creepers, complete with the appropriate "bell" and "cheering" sound effects. It eventually blasts Odd, but Ulrich comes in and flattens the monster by jumping on it. He then knocks it off the edge with a kick to its head.
It can also be surmised that Odd and Ulrich regularly spar with each other (where is not made clear) from a comment that Ulrich makes to XANA's polymorphic clone when it was in Odd's form: "You're wasting your time, XANA. Odd has never beaten me yet!" In "XANA's Kiss", Odd fought against the polymorphic clone, but he was no match for its increased strength and speed. Also, Odd does the same stance as Ulrich in "Mister Pück" when fighting Jeremie.
On Lyoko, Odd has cat-like reflexes and amazing acrobatic ability. His abilities differ from Yumi's in that her talents usually focuses on handsprings, while Odd more commonly uses tumbling, backflips, kickflips and somersaults. He's also a strong climber, thanks to his cat-like claws used for gripping surfaces, as well as having a talent for rock climbing as stated in the episode "Vertigo". He also occasionally runs on all fours, just like a cat/dog, in Lyoko and shows no problem in doing so, as if it's part of his nature when virtualized. In "St. Valentine's Day", he was also capable of climbing up walls of ice, though only in his Lyoko form. In "Franz Hopper", he also imitates the "meow" sound that a cat usually makes when he was fighting with a Creeper.
Odd fights with Laser Arrows, which are powerful spearheads that he fires from his arms. In the first season, he could only hold 10 in each arm, and on a bad day he would run out at inconvenient times. Jeremie could reload the arrows, as well as increase the amount to about twice the norm, but it took time and did little good. In the second season, however, Jeremie was able to give Odd the ability to hold up to 10,000 arrows, pretty much assuring that he would never run out.
Odd also has the power of anticipation, otherwise known as foresight, in Lyoko, which allows him to see short distances into the future. Unfortunately, he has no control over this power, and it rarely comes to him. In the second season, he never receives a vision. Instead, Aelita is the one receiving visions, though not in the same way. It's possible that he lost or gave up this power in favor of his shield ability and greatly increased arrow capacity.
Odd uses the Overboard, a form of hovering skateboard developed by Jeremie to enable faster travel in Lyoko. It's capable of flight and is easily the most manuverable of the three vehicles, as demonstrated by Aelita in the episode "A Bad Turn" and by Odd on numerous occasions.
Trivia
* Like Jeremie, Odd's voice changed during the course of the show. Near the beginning, it was quite high, but by the middle of the first season, it became a bit lower and a new voice actor (Matthew Géczy) was hired to voice him.
* Odd appeared in the precursor to Code: LYOKO called Garage Kids. In this, he has just arrived at Kadic, and his voice sounds much different than the show's version of the character. However, he still has that goofball smile and purple clothes.
* When travelling to the factory through the sewers, Odd uses a skateboard.
* In the episode "Teddygozilla", Odd says "Impact" when firing an arrow at a monster. Later on, in Holiday in the Fog, Odd says "Laser Flash" just before being devirtualized.
* In the episode "Killer Music", Odd and Ulrich got into a fight over Odd turning his music down so Ulrich could study for a physics exam. Afterwards, Odd was left in a coma and was near-death throughout most of the episode. Sissi, Yolande (then called Dorothy), and a good portion of those in town also suffered the same fate.
* In "Holiday in the Fog", it is revealed that he has a grandmother, who he calls "Gram."
** His mother can be heard in "A Great Day", saying something about not knowing who Aelita is.
* Matthew Géczy, the second voice actor for Odd in the American dub, has commented on a message board that he is much like his character: a goofball when not recording, but takes it seriously when he does record.
** In "Attack of the Zombies", Odd was transformed into a zombie. Matthew Géczy made all of Odd's zombie sounds himself; he got into character, then imagined Odd as a zombie.
* While Odd goes to Lyoko more often than Ulrich or Yumi, for some reason he ends up on the receiving end of XANA's stranger attacks more than the other members of Team Lyoko. For example: he was stuck in the collapsing school in "Just in Time", weakened and drained of his life force by the laughing gas in "Laughing Fit", affected by the killer music in the aptly named "Killer Music", zombified in "Attack of the Zombies", nearly killed by an experiment in "Tip-Top Shape", and almost drowned in "Revelation". In addition, he has been the victim of being crushed by the movable Carthage terrain in more instances than either Ulrich or Yumi; he likens the effect to that of being run over by a steamroller. He also likens Carthage in general to be worse than Mrs. Hertz's class.
* In the episode "Seeing is Believing", Odd formed a rock band called the Pop Rock Progressives, with Jim as (additional) trombone accompaniment, himself as the bass guitarist, Nicholas on drums, Ulrich on electric keyboard, and Yumi as the lead singer. The band has not been seen since that episode.
* In the episode "Revelation", Odd reveals that he had an overall grade point average of 75 for the term, despite his lackluster performance and ignoring his studies.
* In the episode "Revelation", XANA replaced Odd with a polymorphic clone. The clone is then sent to Lyoko in Odd's place. Jeremie notices something wrong, but can't find the reason. When it is first virtualized, it has the same appearance as Odd usually does, but with very small pupils, like how his eyes were in the first season. It acts as if it's Odd with a bad attitude at first, but turns on the group after a short time. Yumi and Ulrich think Odd has been taken over by XANA as well. Yumi is devirtualized by the clone first. It then turns on Ulrich. Once it learns that it is no match for Ulrich, it reveals the ability to take the form of any member of Team Lyoko, complete with the abilities, skills, and weapons they possess. It spookily switched from Odd's regular form into a darker version of Ulrich's form. The clone was similar in appearance to the original, but had a dark red and black color scheme for the uniform, a red saber, an orange karate headband, and a gray skin tone with black hair. Also, the Eye of XANA was clearly visible in its pupils, but the corneas were orange rather than white. The clone did not speak after this occurred, but rather gasped, growled, grunted, and screamed with XANA's voice instead. A battle then ensued between the two, with neither gaining any ground on the other at all. The clone eventually managed to steal Ulrich's katana, and was just as skilled with two as it was with one. Ulrich had to use Pencak Silat to retrieve his weapon. Oddly enough, it's the clone's weapon that he takes back. In the end, Ulrich prevailed over the clone, causing its death by stabbing it in the stomach with his katana.
* Odd knows how to pick small locks, as seen by his retrival of the Team Lyoko's cell phones from Mrs. Hertz's locker after they had been confiscated in the episode "Satellite". Jeremie has also picked locks on occasion.
* Several small clues in the series reveal that Odd may have had a relative who was in the military. For example, in "Just in Time", he tells Milly and Tamiya "About face," which is a term used in the military for a 180° turn to the right from the position of attention. He says this in many other episodes, like "Attack of the Zombies", usually to prepare his friends for battle. He also commands XANA's monsters like an army in "Marabounta", and was complimented by Yumi for being a good combat general. Since his parents are artists, it would likely be his grandfather, or perhaps his father.
* Odd likes to make movies; he is also the director and sometimes the starring actor of the movies and music videos he makes.
** Before Code: Earth begins, he made a music video, called Break Break Break Dance, that got mistakenly switched for Jeremie's materialization program for Aelita.
** In "Cold War", Odd is seen rummaging through Jeremie's trash in order to find one of his short films to show to a TV newscaster. While searching, Ulrich asked whether the film was Natural Grandeur 2 or I Guess Our Guest is a Ghost. It turned out to be the latter.
** In "Contact", one of Odd's films is a short movie featuring Sissi as a giantess. It's titled Natural Grandeur, which seems to be the prequel to the film mentioned in "Cold War". This would make sense since this episode was shown before "Cold War" in France. At the end of the episode, Odd approached Sissi and asked her to play a part in his next short film, which was inspired by the events that occurred during that episode. She refused the offer, but will likely be in more of his films in the future.
Voice actor information
In the American dub of Code: LYOKO, Christophe Caballero provided Odd's voice in the first and fourth episodes (Teddygozilla and Log Book, respectively). Matthew Géczy provides Odd's voice in the other episodes.
In the Spanish dub of Code: LYOKO, Odd is voiced by Gabriel Ortiz. <!--Where can the Spanish version be found? It's not on any of the official DVDs; neither are the French and Chinese versions!-->
