Intriguingly, Forsyth's novels have had echoes in reality in recent years. In 2004, a group of British-led alleged mercenaries were arrested in Zimbabwe allegedly en route to Equatorial Guinea, where it was believed they intended to assist the country's opposition in overthrowing the government. In exchange for this assistance, the leaders of the group were allegedly offered lucrative mineral concessions in Equatorial Guinea. Media commentators immediately drew comparisons with the plot of Forsyth's novel The Dogs of War, which had been written more than 30 years before, and also involved a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea. One of those convicted of involvement in the coup was an ex-SAS officer, Simon Mann. Mann is a former associate of Lt. Col. Tim Spicer, the chief executive of the British "Private Security Company" Aegis, and for this reason the British government had sought advice from Spicer when they first received intelligence that a coup was being planned.

Nikita ([[Anne Parillaud]]), tossicomane, partecipa con la sua gang delle [[Banlieue]] [[parigi|parigine]] ad una rapina per procurarsi la [[droga]] nella farmacia dei suoi genitori adottivi.
Durante la rapina la polizia interviene uccidendo tutti i suoi compagni. Stordita dalla sua tossicodipendenza uccide uno dei poliziotti intervenuti, a sangue freddo, prima di venire arrestata.
Viene processata e [[pena di morte|condannata a morte]] per inizione letale, ma in realtà non viene uccisa: si ritrova in una piccola cella.
In realtà finisce dentro una struttura del [[DGSE]] dove un agente dei [[servizi segreti]] [[Francia|frencesi]] ([[Tchéky Karyo]]), che poi le farà da tutore, la mette davanti una scelta: diventare un killer per lui oppure finire realmente nella tomba dove è stata tumulata per finta. Dopo alcune iniziali resistenze Nikita impara tutti i meccanismi del mestiere attraverso un durissimo addestramento.
Viene invitata per la prima volta in un ristorante fuori dal centro di addestramento, dove come regalo riceve una pistola ed è costretta ad uccidere un uomo.
Proseguendo il film, Nikita è costretta dalla necessità di uccidere ancora, finchè finalmente gli viene assegnata una missione che deve organizzare da sola.
